In 1999, I had the opportunity to visit the former Chandris Cruises ocean liner BRITANIS and the former Canadian National ferry BLUENOSE while they were laid up in Tampa, pending sale. Shortly later, both were sold for scrap. The BRITANIS never made it to the Alang India scrapyards, sinking off of Cape Town South Africa.

In 1997, Cunard Line produced their first television commercials to promote their fleet in North America. I worked in the Cunard sales department at the time and remember that my first impression when I saw them was "Huh??". The commercials did not appear for long and my guess is that the typical response was like mine. What do you think?

I sailed on her in September 2969. The Captain said it was the worst crossing he had ever known. We were 2 days late docking in Montreal, and stayed in a CP hotel before our journey on to Winnipeg on a wonderful CP train!
Spectacular to see a proper ocean liner doing proper ocean liner things. Tremendous manifestations these ships were of engineering meeting art.
Huge difference even back then between a Ocean Liner and a Caribbiean Cruise.
Hello David, thanks for this gem of a video. I'm currently making a video about the Lirica class, and there's a small part dedicated to the Mistral, who was the very first of this class. Would you mind if I borrow some shots of your video and insert them in mine ? It would just be one or 2 minutes, and I'll make sure you're credited. That would be a nice bonus for me. Anyway, thank you for this tour of the ship in its original configuration 🙂
She was on her last legs, just like her passengers haha
Can i ask, when you docked at ports how long did you stay? Was you able to get on and off as you wanted? Which ports dod you visit in 1985? Sorry for all the questions lol
sailed on this ship back in 1995 .... loved it because it was a smaller ship and more homey. We never got lost either.
I remember as having a black hull in 1999 millennium cruise sailing out of santo domingo and moored at st bars dec 31 1999. I was sure it was that ship.
I remember first time i saw her on Piraeus... WHAT A BEAUTY!!! Magnificent ship... Congratulations to Captains officers and crew! Thank you for the video!
Thank you for posting this! It's people like you that give us a glimpse into this beautiful ship that have never been seen like this! I'm so glad this lady was at least saved. 🤞For the SS UNITED STATES
I visited her in 1993 when she was known as "Star of Texas', a gambling ship that did 12 hour voyages from Galveston, TX.
@@rpenmark1776 what condition was she in? I have never seen photos of her as Star of Texas.
@@davidpowers6920 The ship offered rooms for the night after the gambling portion of the voyage ended. We stayed in an inside cabin. I don't believe the ship had been updated much. It seemed 'old' (vintage) to me at the time. I do recall seeing maple leaf decor in the iron work in stair cases, railings, etc. I chatted with the British cruise director, she allowed this was a test market, (they pulled out of TX market within a few weeks. I believe the ship then moved to the Florida market for a while? I wish I had taken pics. I will search through my old travel memorabilia and if I find something, I will post it.
I went on the Bolero (Starward) back in 2000 with my family, thank you for the memories!
Was on the infamous Christmas cruise of 1989. My sister insisted that I put on the seasick patch before getting on the ship. It was a true Love Boat ship to be sure. A day or so into the cruise we hit heavy seas and it was during the first night dinner where everyone dressed up. Half way through it the curtains were swaying and food rolling off of the tables. People were turning green and then the vomiting began. Thank God I had the patch. It cleared out pretty fast so we had the room to ourselves. People were throwing up everywhere! On the stairs, in the ash trays and in the potted plants. We ended up in the hot tub on the upper deck watching a light on the distance go up and down with the rocking of the ship on the heavy waves. Some crew members were sitting close in the darkness smoking and laughing. It was a hell of a first cruise for me and I will never forget it!
Great old footage, I travelled on Canberra in 1983 and have fond memories, I can still remember things I saw in your video as if it were last week.
Great family boat.
Afternoons in the Queens room was the best time as a ships steward,I could leisurely walk about the sleeping elder passengers and steal their handbags,it was not uncommon for them to have hundreds of dollars in them and Ofcourse the key to their cabins. The cabins had numerous pieces of jewellery and expensive dress watches. All of this was easily hidden onboard in various places until we were ashore. I made hundreds of thousands during my time onboard off these super rich idiots GREAT DAYS
@@Andy-x3e4z 🤣
Did you know Steve Wright? A fellow steward who worked on board from 1980 to 1987?
Hi David! I actually worked on the MS Flamenco as a cruise staff for the 1997-1998 season. We started off from Savona, Italy in December 1997, crossed the Atlantic over to Barbados, then cruised the Caribbean until end of March 1998 and then back to Europe. This video brings back great memories to me! Thanks a lot for sharing!

I have pictures of me with Captain Apistolas and many other crew members beeing shown in this video! So many great memories! I was 22 years old back then...I'm now 50. I can recall eveything I see in this video. I remember myself doing bingo in the Universe Lounge, eating once at the Captain's table in the dinning room and having fun with guests on the pool deck. Thanks for sharing David! Bonjour from Québec City! Mr Sorel.
@@navigateur101 glad you enjoyed it! I worked for them when they had a sales office in NYC and marketed as First European Cruises.
My first cruise was on this ship..it was so much fun
Great video. The little blonde kid reminds me of myself. Grew up on the St Lawrence and had a small boat at 5. Love the Thousand Islands and Rideau are the fondest memories of my childhood.
My grandparents were on this maiden voyage. I wish I could find the passenger list.
Love the video Dave. What were the actual causes of their demise? Over extended? 9/11? Their product was reliable. They kept their ships immaculately, food was t terrible for a budget line. In this video, the ship looks beautiful.
9/11 was the final blow. They were already having $$ issues as ships were very expensive to operate (steam turbines, high fuel costs). I remember talking with their head of marine operations, who had worked for Cunard, who told me that even sailing full capacity for the Rembrandt, they were losing money due to the low fares passengers were paying.
@@davidpowers6920 I was trying to think if it was chicken or egg, but it was Regency that went down before 9/11, wasn’t it.? So sad though. Low fares made them attractive to many, but couldn’t fill the coffers. :-(
I remember taking my young cousin Paul, who lived in Liverpool, many times in the 1960s, to the Pier Head to see the Empress of Canada.🙂
On second thoughts, maybe it’s not.
This was the former Southern Cross. I was a steward on her in 1962/3
I love this!! A full 1h30, too. Love these videos about QE2 being circulated around RUclips. If people like you didn't take the initiative, where would these special pieces of QE2's illustrious history be? This is digitized AND shared to the world. I had the privilege of boarding the ship on her last call to Los Angeles back in 2008 and it is one of my most cherished memories. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this wonderful video. And I did watch it while drinking coffee out of one of the ship's original 1970s era tea cups I purchased on eBay probably sometime during the pandemic or shortly thereafter. So. Vicarious voyaging over here. Hope to one day visit her in Dubai as well.
Wow, just come across this. I was the DJ and Club Lido host (Stuart Barton). This has brought back some wonderful memories, thank you.
I worked in the Cunard office in NY from 1984 to 1997. I remember your name from voyages on QE2!
To davidPowers, we were on the August 5th 1969 trip from Liverpool to Montreal. We may have played together being your age group.
We were on the August 20 sailing from Liverpool. So just missed each other. It was a rough crossing as we hit part of Hurricane Camille and I was sea sick a couple of days. When the ship was scrapped in India, I bought the children’s room mural, the builder’s plate and the ship’s wheel. A bit obsessed I guess…
After 30 years of cruises, still my favourite ship. Thank you for this video.
I was passenger on this magnificent ship and her sistership Empress of England (Montreal to Liverpool) in the summer of 1969, making our way back from France to Montreal, Quebec. I was 9 years of age at that time and almost 55 years later, I still remember its looks, my playing on the grand piano the night of the talent show, accompanied by the orchestra, my dad playing the accordion, my younger sister bringing back home her balloon from the party on board the ship home, the kitchen smells in the passageway, the daycare service at the end of the floor, the tobacoo store where I bought a plastic model ship and built it in sleeping room, the theatre, the service at the tables, the stability of the ship during the crossing and the winds, her arrival close to Newfoundland, the crossing of whales, her moving under the Jacques Cartier Bridge before finally arriving at the Montreal port, and my wanting it had lasted forever. Thank you for sharing such a well made video of this ship. Captain Williams was the captain for our trip across as his name appears in the souvenir passanger list and crew members I have kepted.
I was 4th Officer on both the England and Canada in 1969 and married the Nursing Sister on her a couple of years later!
I sailed on her in August 1969 when I was 8, with my family from Liverpool to Montreal.
Was it Mrs Evans or Mrs Prentice? @@davidmacmahon7964
That black smoke looked like they were cremating bodies
Great video. The fun starts around 51:15
I love those horns
Looks like the Fairwind or Fairsea of Sitmar. I prefer these ships. Better stability and they look like ships not condos on a barge
Captain John Treasure Jones, a truly great, and skilled Captain... much respect!
Just found this Dave!!! Loving it.. I was on board on 6/11/97.. I have a feeling if I was on with the WSS/PONY I would have hung out with you all.. .🤔🤔Regal Empress looking so lovely...OMG.. those decks.. OceanBreeze was immaculately kept... I feel like Im visiting an old friend...
Beautiful ship, so elegant with such presence!
That is the ss rotterdam, why is the name changed?
Because at that time she had been sold to Premier Cruises and renamed the Rembrandt
We came to Montreal , Canada , from Cardiff ,Wales in July 1966 from Liverpool for a weeks journey on The Empress if Canada . We lived in Canada ever since then mostly in Vancouver BC, still . I temember i was only 6 & my 7 yr old Sis Alison & 2 younger sisters Belinda& Nicola too Great trip was seasick but the pool waves were hitting the inside of the toof on board. It was rough waves on our journey but im sure we all enjoyed it Memories!! 💖💖
We crossed in August 1969 from Liverpool and encountered the tail end of Hurricane Camile. I spend a couple days seasick as the liner really rocked and rolled!
Was on this ship in 98 in 8m swells. I remember piano flipping over. Lotsa people barfing. Climb, crash, climb... all night
This kind of footage is precious.
Enjoyed watching
I'm pretty sure I went on this ship around 1975 (out of Miami). An uncle allowed me to join him in December with stops in Haiti, Jamaica, Cozumel, and St Thomas. It was my first cruise so it holds a special memory for me.
Wonderful memories when I worked at P&O head office in Sydney I booked many passengers Syd/Stg she did the first cruise to nowhere in the early 70s .
We sailed the REGAL EMPRESS the year before in May 1996, I got a lot of interior and exterior photos of my her. The last time I had seen her was when she left out of Port Everglades after midnight on her way to the breakers, i cried my eyes out. I had seen the OCEAN MAJESTY, that was the OCEANBREEZE last name, she took the place of the REGAL EMPRESS on the Port Everglades run to Nassau. The OCEAN MAJESTY still looked good, I wanted to visit the ship to get interior and exterior photos, but my husband said no. It was also nice to see the MERIDIAN ex GALILEO we sailed her too in 1987.
Oh my Lord! She was my home in 1998! It makes me cry! ❤
Absolute beauty... As a wee kid my aunt & uncle gave me a model of her after a cruise.
Beautiful ship.
First time I went on here in 1989, my dad got a last minute cabin through his work (used to get discounts on cruises, he worked at a docks) and it was on F deck if I remember, we had to go through the kitchen to get to it so I assume it was for staff, really small, the toilets were up the corridor and the childrens entertainer was in the cabin opposite. Loved every minute though and ended up going on another two times in 90 and 91, then moved onto the Oriana in 95 because she was the big new one at the time. Great memories.
This ship or the Sea Breeze 1999, up the coast and to Halifax Nova Scotia. Got to see Titanic victims graveyard and the maritime museum. Wasn't that great a cruise, cheap food, people smoking all over the place. Last night had some heavy waves. Oh and they would wake everyone up at like 8am, quite annoying. But I HAD to have my Titanic experience thing lol.
