I have set this channel up to present information about fishing, fishing rod building, hand tied Crappie jigs, 3D printing, and possibly some other random information. If for whatever reason you enjoy what I have published, then great and thank you. I am not sponsored (yet) by anyone. I just enjoy figuring out how to video what I'm doing and then create the video uploads.
3D Printed Tarantula
This 3D print is of the Tarantula designed by MatMire Makes. I printed this at a size of 70% from the original and it took 9 hours and 15 minutes to complete. In hind site, I should have printed this at 75% or larger. Some of the leg joints did not hold up at 70%. I like this print but I will have to be careful of the legs. But on the good side, I can always print additional legs.

Hand Tied Crappie Jig - Orange and Chartreuse
Просмотров 4921 день назад
I created this jig after watching one of the Woods and Waters videos. A big difference is I do not paint my jigs. The video is of making a 1/8 oz jig but I also made 1/32 oz jigs. This has been a very good jig on Lake Lavon this fall. It is made on a 1/8 oz #4 sickle hook, Flo Orange and Green Chartreuse Neck Hackle, Chartreuse Pepper Chenille, and Chartreuse Mega Krystal Flash. You can pick up...

This 3D print is of the Articulated Raccoon designed by MatMire Makes. I printed this at a size of 75% from the original and it took 9 hours and 20 minutes to complete. This is a well designed print and should hold up very well playing with it as all of the joints seem to be very sturdy. Hand Tied Split Tail Crappie Jig
Просмотров 36Месяц назад
I decided to attempt to create a hand tied split tail jig. This has taken many attempts and I'm not sure I still have the process down. I made this jig with a 1/8 oz sickle hook jig head, moonlight chenille, and hot flo pink neck hackle. I was able to catch quite a few good sized crappie on this jig and it will be one of my go to jigs. You can pick up your supplies at Woods and Waters Outdoors....

Hand Tied Bluegill Jig - All Black
Просмотров 222 месяца назад
I originally made this small jig to go to some local ponds to catch bluegill. The one pone I am familiar with produced nothing. Even with hotdogs. I went to another pond and caught some bluegills but never tried this jig. However, since I have been able to get back on Lavon, this jig is very successful catching crappie. This hand tied bluegill jig is made with a 1/32oz #8 sickle hook, Moonlight...
3D Printed Mirror control Shim/spacer for a 89 Camaro
Просмотров 32 месяца назад
My son was working on repairing the broken mirror mechanism on an 89 Camaro. When the replacement part was ordered, the old pieces fit but were too loose when put together. What was needed was a simple 3D print of a shim/spacer to fill the gap so everything could be put together and work correctly. The design in FreeCad is a simple cylinder but the specs needed to be close. The actual print may...
Mercury XR6 150 HP Fuel Pump
Просмотров 442 месяца назад
This video shows the insides of a 32 year old fuel pump on a Mercury XR6 150 HP engine. I was going to make a video on the actual rebuild but there are many other videos that do a great job of that. So this is simply showing how deteriorated the gaskets and valves got after being used for 32 years. The problems I was having were when shifting from idle to forward the engine would stall. I would...
Hand Tied Bluegill Jig - Just White

Because Ray Roberts and Lake Lavon were both flooded and the boat ramps are closed, I decided to try catching bluegills in some local ponds here in Plano. The bluegills in these ponds are very small. That is why I decided to get some #8 hooks instead of the normal #4 hooks that I use for crappie. These hooks have 1/32 oz weights which is perfect for shallow ponds. But if you take these jigs to ...

3D Printed Intercomm Plate Repair
Просмотров 203 месяца назад
This is a simple 3D print project. Initially I was going to print the entire intercomm plate removing the door bell button as the intercomm has not worked for years. But my wife suggested simply replacing the cover for the speaker portion. So that Is what I did.

Rod Building - One way to make Trim Bands
Просмотров 5314 месяца назад
There are many ways to make trim bands. I like to use them on my spinning guides. When I do a spinning guide, I make an underwrap that contains my trim bands or other designs, and then use an overwrap to actually attach the guide. In this example (the video is different because I can't count correctly) my trim bands are 6 wraps each. In the video I had one with 7 wraps, another 5 and yet anothe...
3D Printed Trim Fastener for Headliner in a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I was working on replacing the headliner in a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee (for the second time) and broke one of the two trim fasteners that attach the headline to the rear roof of the Jeep. Thinking, this is something I can design and print I decided to tackle it. Got into FreeCad and created a design. The problem with the design is the overhangs. I designed in a taper which compensated for the ove...

that rattlesnake turned out beautifully
how long would a 42 inch Rattlesnake take to print? longer than 34 hours?
John....go to Walmart and buy you the cheapest curling iron. You know.....the ones women use to curl or straighten their hair. A curling iron is a jig tiers best freind. Those feathers that you call "wonky" can be straighten and flatten nicely. Not sure if youbever use calf tail on your jigs but if you do, some calf tails are very curly towards the ends which is normally where the longer hairs are. Using a curling iron will straighten them out perfectly and you can use that section of calf tail for bigger jigs like smallmouth jigs. Just trying to help and by the way...outstanding pattern. See have become freinds with Pat over at Woods and Water. I buy 99% of all materials from him. The only thing I don't buy is some paints he doesn't carry. Outstanding company and customer service is second to none. Pat is an awesome guy.
I agree that Pat is a great guy. I'll look into the curling iron.
Sehr informativ. Genau dies habe ich ebenfalls vor. Vielen Dank !
Very nice John!
Do not throw your print away if gears are stuck. Drill the center gear off and print the only this one as 2 halves divided horizontally resized 85%. Keep the hole as same size. You can easily plug these 2 halves at center and use your guide.
That’s a work of art! And inspirational!
Thank you.

Hello, do you still have the STL file to print this part, because I need it. I am in Belgium and it costs 70 euros if I have to have it shipped. It would be nice if you could send it by email
Yes I do. Let me know how to get you a copy.
You should try using some 3d print bed adhesive to prevent parts from popping off the plate. I got a tube of Magigoo off Amazon for less than $20 and it works great so far.
If I took the time to find tune the Z axis it would work better. Guess I'm just lazy.
@@thegnewguy if you can manually tune the z offset on that printer you can do something called the paper test for a super quick and easy calibration. just get a standard sheet of printer paper and lower the Z-offset until you can move the paper and it just barely scrapes the nozzle.
@@frozenepsilon5295 I have a video on how to do that. My bed is level. I haven't cleaned it in over a year. Guess I'm just lazy.
Bass pro sells those upper water pump kits. The price is kinda high, almost 60 dollars. I put one in my 115hp mercury. It's a early 70s and all the replacement parts fit.
I picked this kit up from Crowley Marine. I don't remember the price.
It looks amazing. He could be a Disney character. I just wish the legs and tail were snap on like the head instead of segmented like other toys.
Mine only took two hours 😂
That's great. What printer do you have and what cura settings did you use?
What’s the part number for the pump. I have the same motor but don’t know what pump fits
Impeller kit 96148Q8 - Quicksilver or 98418T8 Mercury
@@thegnewguy you're a legend.
Wish this was a video of the actual repair.
I would think a repair would follow the same steps.
Nice video John!! Looks cool! I make fishing videos too and I love watching yours!! Keep up the awesome job!! 🤜🤛💪
what paint do you use to color the fur
The feather is one I found in the yard. There is no paint.
hi john i do a little tying and wondered if you had a method of getting tying thread from a large spool to a small spool to fit bobbin holders as i remember you saying on one of your videos about something of that nature
For my jig tying I only use small spools.
I dont know why you haven't got a comment yet, but good job man. Jig looks great, and it looks like you have had a lot of time behind that vise. That will surely catch crappie
Thanks. Many of my videos do not have comments. I make the videos first so I can look back and see what I did and second, I actually enjoy making the videos and learning something new.
Thanks for the inspiration and tutorial I’m going to inlay some feathers into a guitar
DO you by chance work for woods & Water or you just get your supplies from them? Just a curiosity on my end, this jig looks like it would work just fine in many of the lakes around here as well. Yes sir, I do the same thing, I enjoy making my own jigs. and making them unique to me as well.. Nicely done on this one. I truly like how you are cutting the hackle feathers up and making the jigs the way you do, I have not seen too many folks tie like this and I like it. Dale
Nope. I'm retired. The first order I placed for supplies was from woods and waters so I asked them if I could put their link in the descriptions. I have thought about selling jigs and rods but then that makes a hobby into a job.
@@thegnewguy Gotcha Makes perfect sense. I am semi retired, I retired from my career 3 years ago now, and I find myself, making stuff I enjoy making and selling some here and there just for the little bit of pocket change to keep going fishing, camping etc. I dont make much, so I use the word semi retired. if that makes sense. Thanks for sharing thier links with us, I made an order this morning after the first couple of videos I watched and I am sure I will switch over to them, the prices are perfect for a small income source. Thanks again my friend. I do what I call tackle shop Tuesday Videos and I will share a link back to your channel soon on one of the jigs I will be tying soon as well as. a link to Woods and water tackle shop as well. Thanks again and have a blessed week Happy fishing Dale
very nice
Thanks for posting John, I was going to try my hand at it & was looking for how do i do this ideas Thanks again for sharing Steve, Australia
I wonder if something like this would work as a fishing lure
I would think you would need to somehow connect multiple hooks. It would sure be a big lure.
What's the purpose of the guide? Does it prevent the filament from knotting?
It helps to change the direction of the filament so it enters the extruder straighter instead of entering at an angle when it comes from the spool on top of the printer.
Hi john really enjoy your informative tying videos and i watched where you said you have a way of spooling large rolls of thread onto smaller thread bobbins that you can use for tying and am very interested in any info that you could share on that ty
David, not me. The spools I use for jigs are already small. The spools I use in rod building are larger so I just hold them in my hand.
@@thegnewguy ok sorry I misunderstood but still love your tying videos like how you stack your hackle and how effortless it is don't have it down to a science but sure has helped me with stacking my hackle for jigs TY
What ender printer do you use and have you made any modifications? Im just starting out and i am enjoying your videos
I have the Ender 3v2. The mod I have made are the yellow springs, path for the filament and when the extruder broke I replaced it with a duel gear extruder.
Thank you😊
What print settings did you end up with on last print?
I set wall count to 3, Horizontal expansion to -0.06, Infill density to 10, Infill pattern to gyroid, Retraction distance to 6, retraction speed to 25, and Z hop height to 0.6.
I like the crab. Cool project. Your z axis issues make me grateful for auto z offset on my printer.
I think I would still find a way to screw up auto z. Lol
Thanks for doing the video i ask for, watched it twice and more than likely will watch again. V's give me a fit to try and tie they roll ever which way when i try tying them, so i have been tying all points on my feather jigs. thanks again for the video.
When I hold the Vs, I pinch them closed.
Can you run down the lake with the graphs extended or have to move them up and down every time you stop and go?
I could but with them raised I would not be able to see. To raise and lower is very simple. I actually use the mount as a hand hold getting in and out of the boat.
@@thegnewguy awesome! Ya I really like this mount and want to put it on my skeeter just trying to look at things about it! Thanks a lot for the response!
When you stack your v's and place on hook do they roll ever which way? Mine do and yours always look like they stay in place could you do a video on tying v's and bring the camera in a little closer? Nice looking jig.
I have only had one jig where the entire stack of feathers shifted. I'm not sure why they stay in place as well as they do. It might be the type of thread or the tightness I make it. I will make a video and try to show something closer up.
I just created this RUclips video hopefully showing in better detail how I make a jig. ruclips.net/video/zIv8rTKAHnk/видео.html
Great looking jig. Do you fish it dead sticking or under a bobber??
Dead stick.
nice wrap bro , Maybe right now I can't make it like that 😅😅😅
Nice, where did you get the wrap book?
Do a search for Decorative Wraps by Billy Vivona . www.thenerbs.com/products/decorative-wraps
John....some of the best patterns I have designed over the last 30 years ha e been made with materials from my junk bucket. I dont throw anything feather materials away because I always end up using them. I like how you go outside of the box and tie patterns that aren't common. I about gaurantee this pattern will get bit. Love the color combinations and how you played the materials down. Great job and excellant color.
Less is more when it comes to crappie jig feathers. 3 V,s and one tip will produce more fish…….
I'll keep that in mind. Thanks
Thank you for the video's
I’ve video. Thank you for showing us your work. Where do you get decals for rods?
The decal I did in this video came with the rod. I have never purchased a decal but I have seen in forms that a place called the decal connection is a good place.
Thank you. Looks great
Love that print its great!
Where did you get the taper spreadsheet from? It looks useful.
I think the Facebook group The Southern Rod Builders in their Doc section.
@@thegnewguy Thank you
Nothing better than using feathers we find ourselves. Great looking jig sir, thank you for taking the time to share this with us and know it is appreciated. Nicely done on this jig build and video. Keep up the fun work and have a blessed weekend. Dale
Intresting
I love the Timelapse! This is such a cool print 😊😊😊
To get the time lapse I have to keep a light on for the entire print.
Thanks for the video... Did you use their LVS34 Zero Degree transducer mount to attach it? Thanks again
Yes I did. I don't know if it really matters but I wanted a straight up and down image rather than a slightly tilted one. I fish by dropping my jig straight down and like to see it all the way.
Overwhelmingly I've heard recommendations to position the spine so the rod bends to the fish and never gave the subject further consideration. It would be interesting to finish two identical blanks to two identical builds, save for the alternating spines, and see how they compare casting and fighting fish!
I agree. Personally, I don't think I would notice a difference. I fish for crappie and seldom do any casting. If I were fishing for bass and casting and fighting fish, then maybe I would see a difference.
Good tie John.
