You have to know that Standard German is not the native language of the ethnic Germans in Romania. For the Swabians from Banat, the Swabian language or dialect was the first language. Only in school they learned Standard German. Romanian they learned perhaps from neighbouring children, or later in school as a foreign language. Although the Banat was very multiethnic and multilingual, the villages were not, just as she describes it. Only in the towns the different groups came together. Oskar Pastrior, who is also mentioned, was from Transylvania, not Banat. That is a different region and the Germans there are of a different ethnic subgroup. They are Saxons. So a Banat Swabian and a Transylvania Saxon could not speak to each other in their respective dialect, they would need to switch to Standard German. And in the past those two different German groups were very seperate from each other and had little contact ... only in the labour camps in the Soviet Union they really came together for the first time.
I think David was very generous here to the Warwick Research Collective and similar kinds of (mostly white, upper middle-class) 'radical' theorists whose careers are based on churning out jargon that they don't fully grasp. I recall a seminar as a student with one of the Research Collective leaders on A Season of Migrations to the North. Just like David said: half-assed knowledge of the cultural context, and a weird worship of some putative 'postcolonial' sanctity of the text.
1:07 The Chinese language did not travel because of its insularity? How about Kanji in the Japanese language, and the Chinese characters in the written form of Korean (before it changed to its current form due to Korean nationalism)? Not to mention the influence of Confucianism in many Asian countries (except for the Indian subcontinent).

The poem quoted by Toni Morrison: “Whose house is this? Whose night keeps out the light In here? Say, who owns this house? It’s not mine. I dreamed another, sweeter, brighter With a view of lakes crossed in painted boats; Of fields wide as arms open for me. This house is strange. Its shadows lie. Say, tell me, why does its lock fit my key?”
Great conversation . Look forward to see more conversations about literature on YT 🙏
Thank you
