R2R2R Hike - Grand Canyon National Park
Просмотров 2113 месяца назад
I hiked the rim to rim to rim hike down South Kaibab to North Kaibab and then back up on Bright Angel Trail. I turned around 1.5 miles from the North Kaibab trailhead due to freezing rain and wind (0% in the forecast). It was a fantastic hike that I hope to do again someday.

Grand Canyon Backpacking

Day 1 of our 5 day backpacking trip into Grand Canyon began with a hike down the South Kaibab Trail to Bright Angel Campground for an overnight stay. This time lapse was shot with a friend's GoPro Hero 3 from a special mount that I made for my backpack. Temps peaked at 90 degrees with wind gusts in the late afternoon around 50 mph. It was a great strenuous hike.

Super smart play to turn around at the Supai Tunnel. Bummer to see more slide damage on that section of trail above Red Wall Bridge. It was really bad last year. Great job on the R3, done wisely!! No regrets on turning around early. The Canyon will be there when you're ready to go again! Thanks for all the awesome views of the Canyon in the early Spring! I'll be running there in 3 weeks.
Thanks for the encouragement. With it being my first time and being solo I was surprised how out of gas I felt on the first climb out the north side. I’ve backpacked the canyon 5 times and done the Escalante Route in a day so I was mentally prepared for the climbs, but I was a little concerned I still had 26 miles to go and felt like I had 30% or so left in the tank. I also knew the north rim was still closed and I knew I was going to need a rest once I reached the rim and wasn’t sure there would be a place out of the weather to get that break. I waited 15-20 minutes in the tunnel for the weather to change and it never did so I remembered my wife’s words she always tells me before I leave, “Don’t do anything stupid.” Thankfully, the lack of energy turned out to be all elevation. I live in NE Houston at 68’ above sea level and as soon as I started downhill I got my energy back and felt fine the rest of the hike. I felt the elevation start to kick back in on the final 3 miles of Bright Angel as well, but I knew that was the end so no need to conserve energy. Thanks for watching and commenting! I hope you have a great run on your R3 as well!
@@aaronlybrand That sounds about right for the Canyon. It just never lets up, and between the elevation, the trail conditions, the weather, and the temps, it's just the full package! You did great! I'm not tough enough to do an R3, so in late May, I go back each year to run Rim2River (I think locals call it "the cowboy loop"), and then in mid-Aug and early Oct, I return for R2R's, as marathons, but done as XC runs (no poles, no walking) which is how I do the Rim2River. Have a few vids on the channel of past runs there, including with my daughter.
@@austinado16 Recommending watching Todd videos, for some useful tips.
@@RubiHammer Rubi, your video series details the trails so well, that they have become a great tool for people to be able judge what they're getting into, as well as create a training program that's appropriate!
@@austinado16 thank Todd. Editing those videos, was also informative for me, identifying where I could have shaved off some time of the hike.
So proud of you!
Dude what a crazy play! But you what… that’s North Shore Football right there !

Hey would my church be able to use this as our series bumper this Summer?
Awesome video! What an amazing time!
I love how this sounds...But I can't quite figure out where you started in the song. Is there any chance you could post a cover of the whole song?
