    I have lots of lead, once poured a 9000 lb sailboat keel. You don’t need a crucible and furnace, you could even use a frying pan. For a mold you can line a wood box with drywall, works good. If you come across a piece of lead too big to melt or move you can cut it up with a chainsaw.

    18:05 What was the reason you put those 'blocks' above the lid, when melting the copper in the furnace? /genuine Q

    • @hairyballbastic8943

      It also just helps the structural integrity iirc, having it at the same heat would reduce the sudden shock from pouring the metal in and allow the mould to last longer. Don't quote me on that though, I don't know how true it is

    • @TreasureIslandCasting
      @TreasureIslandCasting 3 месяца назад

      The "blocks" are the moulds. Heating them up prevents steam explosions and makes nicer bars, because the temperature difference is not so big.

    You don't need a ceramic crucible (or this fancy furnace) to melt lead, and neither a graphite mould. In fact, considering density of lead and melting point you'd be better off (and safer) using some steel vessel with a sturdy handle (an old, discarded stainless steel cooking pot, or carbon steel/ iron one would be more than sufficient). Or you could use an old (empty) discarded fire extinguisher cut "in half", with a length of pipe, working as a handle, welded to it. Same for the pouring mould - any steel container would do (heck, back when I was a kid I used a matchbox "drawers" made of cardboard to make small lead ingots - the combustion point for cardboard is above melting point of lead). Graphite? Save it for gold, silver, brass or steel. And then you can make that steel mould exactly in the shape ow the weight you need for your boat - see "keel pouring" for Tally Ho boat, "Pouring a Lead Keel (Pt 3) (Tally Ho / EP119)", ruclips.net/video/Pl1ytAcjQmc/видео.html - the mould they used is made of sand and epoxy resin, which is just "heat resistant enough" for molten lead. Also, as others said, a simple propane burner should be enough (if there is more of lead to be melt you could use bigger one, like those they use for stir frying in woks in Chinese restaurants), and using it instead of this "hot" furnace would be actually beneficial - as it would help you to control the temperature better. That is, to keep lead "just hot enough" - which means, less lead vapour in the air, and less oxidation of lead. Also, lead is pretty dense, so steel vessels (and moulds) are just somewhat "safer" to handle. Also, it's just easier to add lead or remove the crud from a regular open vessel on a propane burner. Speaking of oxidation, I used to throw a candle wax on top of molten lead, it somewhat helps to deal with that floating crud, but the wax may spontaneously catch fire if the lead is too hot, so "be warned". Also, rosin would be much better than wax, but it's somewhat expensive. You may try a regular soap too, "the plainer the better" (soap flakes seem to be the best choice), it should work too, but I never tried it myself - so "try on yer own risk" ;-)

      I used to melt lead on a wood fire stove made from a few bricks, and a cast iron pan - to make fishing leads. Back in the 1970s when lead wasn't toxic and kids could be trusted with liquid metals.

    You are getting steam pockets. This is from damp mold and not heating it up to about 200F for a few hours before use. You can see this by the vibrating molted metal.

    This is fantastic. I have wanted to try lost wax but I don’t have an oven. Your way is fantastic. Question if I may. How did you set up the foundary for this, the heat and how long. This would be a great video !! Thank you !!!!

    • @TreasureIslandCasting
      @TreasureIslandCasting Год назад

      I waited until the foundry has cooled down to about200degrees Celsius, then I inserted the mould with the wax inside, to melt out the wax. this takes only some minutes. After the wax is out of the mould, I dried the mould in a normal oven at about 200 degrees Celsius for several hours until there is 0% moisture inside the plaster. Kind regards from Treasure Island!
