Approximate mid seventies, I watched this movie as a young kid. I was mesmerized by the unique plot. It was one of those movies no one viewed. Made worse, my attempt to brag about this movie without a title and proof made me look foolish. Finally got the title and proof. That only took about 50 years! Now I’m going to watch the movie.

xxxxx There's no "the" in the title of this film. It's: "Panic In Year Zero." That's okay, though, it's a common mistake. Two obscure facts about this movie. First, supposedly it failed at the box office because it came out around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It didn't really gain any popularity until they began showing it on late night television a decade after it came out. Second, it was attacked by critics for painting an optimistic picture of survival after a nuclear exchange. Even in 1962 the anti-nuclear lobby was pushing the concept that nobody could survive a nuclear war, and even those few who did escape death initially, would find themselves in a world not worth living in.That's not true, of course, but that's the scenario they've kept pushing to this very day. People that fall for that argument need to investigate what the Chinese and Swiss think about the matter. I've had this movie in my DVD collection for years. It's an example of why I own over a thousand title's in the first place, and why I don't put much faith in streaming services. The film paints an unflattering picture of capitalism. It's subtle, but it's there. I'm not sure what message the screenwriter was trying to convey. Perhaps it was unconscious on his part, but if you weave certain scenes together, capitalism takes a hit! Personally, I think this was Frankie Avalon's finest role. Also, the rumor is that Jean Hagan came out of retirement as a favor to Ray Milland to play the mother. Some casual viewers find it hard to believe this is the same person who played the ditzy, but vicious silent film star in the comedy, "Singing In The Rain." (Spoiler Alert) The whole storyline concerning the captive farm girl's life as a sexual slave was unusually graphic for it's time. The murder of the hardware store owner and his wife, and the rape of the family's daughter, was also startling for such a low budget, mainstream film. "Panic In Year Zero" has long been one of my favorite movies, and might be one of the few stories that deals optimistically with the aftermath of nuclear war. The only other story I can think of that does so, is Pat Frank's novel "Alas Babylon." Finally, I like the music, which I consider a form of "hard" jazz. Despite it's silly title, it's a solid, well told story. On my personal rating scale, I give this low budget thriller an 8.9 out of 10. I highly recommend it!

My bad on the pronunciation of the title. Sometimes when you're recording it's easier to go with it than it is to stop and start over. Good insights on the film. It's one I've always liked and not enough people know about it.

I'm 57 & agree w/your assessment. I'm trying to dump Peacock, & am bingeing $6M eps I missed as a boy (we didn't get ABC). Bigfoot V was obvious that the series would be canceled b/c it has no magic. It's a guy in a suit! The Secret of Bigfoot, impressed everyone when it aired Sunday night back in the day; The Return Of was still good, but a recent rewatch showed it wasn't as good. Still, to a kid this was prime rib! Thanks for the memories! :-)
