Amethyst - Etude on Double Notes (AMEB Grade 7, List A, in The Sonorous Harp)
There are 2 versions of Amethyst by K. Mestrovic - A lever harp version and a pedal harp version. This is the pedal harp version. Both sound pretty much the same, however, the lever harp version is modulated up a semitone, so it's playable on the lever harp.
The piece is a study on double notes (ie. alternating between fingers 1 + 3 & 2 + 4). It is serene, and is written to let the whole harp ring out. (capitalise on the harp's resonant nature).

Quarter Finals Dutch Harp Competition Video

This was the video I submitted for the quarter finals of the Dutch Harp Competition. It's a little insight into my philosophy and inspiration behind harp composition, and a short presentation of some of my works. The full program I ended up performing at the competition was as follows: Araneae, by K. Mestrovic, solo harp For Helena, by K. Mestrovic, solo harp Atmospheres, by K. Mestrovic, solo ...
Lento, from the lever harp book "Sonorous Strings"

Lento, by K. Mestrovic, is a lyrical piece. It can be used to strengthen the left hand with the frequent passing under and over in arpeggios. Although the fingering may appear challenging, it is important in achieving a specific sound.

Suite of Eight Dances; V. Bolero I learnt Bolero in preparation for the program, but didn't end up including it in the performance as it made the whole program too long. However, there's no harm in sharing it here! Enjoy :)

Very cool & thanks for sharing
The trio of violin, flute and harp sounds wonderful. The marimba and harp duo too. Thanks for the textual explanations. Very interesting, Greetings!

Wow - So articulate! Just wondering... i was looking at getting into harp next year - is it possible to not use gut strings? I'm vegan and don't know if Id be allowed to do it - what do you use?
Hey! I found this: harpcolumn.com/forums/topic/play-pedal-harps-without-gut-strings/ hopefully that helps :)
This is wonderful, thank you so much! I'm changing my felts today using your guide
Wonderful! I hope it went well :)
Best harpist ever ❤
You may not me getting a lot of views, but this just makes you a hidden gem. Thanks for the upload. Sounds amazing.
Beautiful!
Is this lass part of harp, or is the harp merged with maiden? 🌺☘ Maybe with instrument, she is one with harp: she knows harmonious-sound, feels its tuneful-strings. 🎶
I am not a professional music critic, but I would say from heavenly-play, performance done with stylish elegant-grace. 🌸 Methinks this young lass, if not already, is well on her way to being harpist master-class. - _Ah, the harp, does it not embody musical-serenity!_ 🎶 One who went from shepherd to court-musician, thence became fugitive on the run, and finally, noble-king David crowned, was likewise skillful with stringed instrument in play (sheep might have been his audience, on many a pastural-day). So effective-skilled indeed, it came to calm a despot's mental-rage. Yet harpist (?) David also skillful-wielded metal-sword on fields of battle, as much as any heroic Greek warrior of classic-stage! --- Yet, sublime Psalms did pen for all the Age! 📜 _Good success,_ Katia Mestrovic, your harp-play is a sweet-gift!
The algorithm blessed with the most wonderful content today
Straight out of the box this is magical.
I wasn’t expecting to see something so humble and humbling. Thank you for posting this.
Wow! --- _Lovely,_ fluid work gentle as flowing water, soothing as natural sound of a country-river. 🎶 The young lass seems master of heavenly instrument. Was it real, or a church-vision? --- She plays it as one might imagine an angel of Heaven, string sublime music descended! Most lovely and well done, Ms. Katia Mestrovic. 🍁🌺🌿
Beautiful! 🌹🌹🌹🌸
Beautiful xx
Nice.
hi sis
it is really good love it ❤
Very nicely done and a joy to hear. I believe the Pleyel and the double action pedal harp were almost contemporary developments in response to romantic music being written at the time. Both Harps were at the World's Fair in Paris to Showcase their ability. Henriette Renie who had studied harp from before she was 6 years old showcased the pedal harp. Jean Risler had two years to develop any technique on the Pleyel demonstrated Gustav Lyon's instrument. His background was piano. Le Monde music critics did note the difference in performance but favorably acknowledged the possibilities of this harp. The Paris harp School vehemently fought against this harp being taught. Risler was hired by the Belgium conservatory and the harp was taught there until the 1970s. There are two RUclips videos of the last living Belgium virtuosos on this instrument. Francette Bartholomee and Paola Chatelle. A social psychologist friend of mine pointed out the response to the Pleyel chromatic parallels Western's society's too frequent judgement of the only valid trait for being human is to value unilateralism to the point all other options being forgotten and misunderstood. History and all truth belongs to those who absolutely control the narrative until others voices are silenced. The Danses following a form of one of Claude's students while not idiomatically chromatic is a familiar piece. It's often used to give proof of the inferiority of the Pleyel and the complete sufficiency of the pedal. To paraphrase a French pedal harp proponent of the time, "The place of a would be Pleyel teacher is in the home bearing children subservient to her husband not in a harp school!" promoting their harp." When the only ones capable of interpreting the history of the Pleyel harp are students of the ones who wanted it eliminated the truth we get will be a Trump for the harp. Therefore I listen to the Danses with stereo understanding. One of conquest/domination the other of lost opportunity for mankind. I am glad to hear it this performance but I'm also glad to hear the last of the Belgian School virtuosi.
