BAC Mono Guy

A channel all about the BAC Mono road legal single seat supercar
Trying my new (to me) Ferrari 355 spider out at Brands Hatch Indy
So I swapped my original 2.3 BAC Mono for this gorgeous 1996 Ferrari 355 spider.
What better way to get to know it than to take it to Brands Hatch!
I had to tiptoe past the Marshalls posts because the level 2 Capristo exhaust is VERY loud, and eventually got back flagged, but what a noise!
Not the fastest car out there but by far the best sounding!

😅
Aston Martin should make this Strolls new car, that way he could have a navigator to keep him out of gravel traps…
Do you ever street drive?
I do, but it’s honestly too fast for the road most of the time. I do drive it to and from track, and there’s an annual 450 mile trip to our private track hire at Anglesey in Wales. On those quiet valley roads, no helmet ( just shatterproof shades, one advantage over a superbike, the only thing that could keep up) hearing the nail gun gear changes echo off the hills is one of life’s great motoring experiences❤
That sound 🤤
Warning - not safe for kids to watch alone.
😢😢😮
@ I know, that was my reaction too, but as my kids said, it’s nature’s way. I was glad they saw the bigger picture, it’s part of growing up.
😅🎉😅😅🎉😂😅🎉🎉
I had to be careful with the noise limits at Brands Hatch, but what a noise!
Archie is a 7 year old Cocker Spaniel, 1/2 working, 1/2 show cocker, 100% rascal ❤
Here from your Valkyrie comment
Thanks for watching. It’s not a Valkyrie but it’s still pretty exciting and a bit more affordable!
Dream car ❤
Yes 💯 (although you have to get used to having your picture taken a LOT if you drive on the road!) It’s about the most extreme thing you can drive on road, a lot of fun!
Is she street legal
This was the best video yet to do exactly what I needed to do! Thanks!
@@jasonpreucel9839 you’re welcome, glad it helped! Please like and subscribe if you found it a help? Thank you
Almost went in my Corvette ZR1. Course looks like it's more a case of who has the biggest balls to keep their foot flat the longest. Don't think I really saw a corner! Bumpy as well, but may just be your cars track type setup, stiff ride etc or was it actually a rough road?
The Mono has fully adjustable adjustable suspension but with only three runs there isn’t really time to optimise it for the hill. I probably should have softened it a bit but I wasn’t expecting it to be quite so bumpy! (I had left it in track mode.) Plenty of grip though and the brakes are mega so no dramas.
Awesome!
This looks so much fun!!
Been considering getting into a BAC or Atom. How often do these track days happen?
@@Fzr005 we have a UK owners group and co-ordinate on WhatsApp. There’s around 25 in the group (there were 20 at Anglesey). I usually do around 10 trackdays per year plus our 2 day Anglesey trip and we get the factory along to support with mechanics, slick tyres etc, it’s pretty reasonable shared between a few drivers. Where are you based? I’ll be at the Shere Hill climb in Surrey next Sunday. (Also to mention if you’re in the market, my first Mono the Raptor Grey one is in sale at the Octane Collection in Horsham.)
Good video, I ifnd it hard to remember each Silverstone corner
Don’t worry! If you play Racing games and watch videos on the track it becomes easier. I recommend watching pole laps from Formula 1 from this year. Hope that helps. Unless you are talking about actually racing and using breaking points , that’s way above my limited expertise lol.
iRacing or similar is a huge help to learning track layouts
Nice footage of a mainly wet event. Hoping that 2025 with be dry!
awesome!!
hi
Wpuld be nice to drive one of these sometime.
Love that sound! Nice driving Robin!
AI shit.
It felt pretty real (and wet!)😊
Weather not as nive as last yr! Looks like a fast track though.
Oh thanks bud! Ive been looking long to find the best solution for this. Your solution is very simple with little damage in the procees.
Would love to see Debbie smashing the record 😂
Cool event❤
Talk radio, that sums up EV driving. Good effort nonetheless 👍
Which do you prefer more? Atom or mono
I’ve never driven an Atom, although I had a passenger ride with Sideways Sid which was brilliant fun. I plan to have a go in exchange for letting one of them drive my Mono at Anglesey. That’s a fair swap!
loved this video! Just discovered your channel and this car - did you drive to silverstone in the mono? How was street / motorway driving in this? I really want to buy one of these, but am curious how it feels to be driving this on public roads when you're on the way to a track.
Thanks for the comment. Yes I drive to tracks, it's much less bother than using transport or trailers (and I don't have room for a trailer at home). The beauty of the Mono is that it's totally road legal and useable, I treat it like a long warm up lap (!), and then when you get to circuit, you empty you luggage out of the 80l front trunk, bolt on some slicks and adjust the camber (takes 20 minutes, and the factory send some mechanics to do it for you if you want) and away you go! (You don't have to use slicks though, half the time I just drive on the Kumho Ecsta's which are road legal trackdays tyres, they're very good.) The Mono is a low downforce car, it's all about mechanical grip, so it's very compliant and easy to drive on road, unlike many track focussed cars that are impossibly stiff. You can easily adjust the suspension settings (all the adjusters are open to view) for track use, but honestly, I just leave it in a mild track setting and use the same for both. The only thing I do change is the brake bias as you don't really want an aggressive track setup on road for that. (There's a knob in the cabin for do that.) On the road you use the clutch most of the time. BAC were wise to fit one, as it means they can have a fully track focussed straight cut gearbox, yet make it drivable on road as well. The longest I've driven is from Surrey to Anglesey for our annual private trackday meet. Driving back through the Welsh Valleys with just shatterproof sunglasses, looking up at the peaks is just motoring heaven! It does about 25mpg on road, so not too bad, although the tank is small so you have to stop quite often. The only thing you have to get used to is having your picture taken while driving a lot! This car is actually for sale now (it's on Autotrader) as I've just bought a new one. I don't know where you are, but I'd be happy to show you the car if your close to Surrey.
Give the Lotus a similar power to weight ratio and the BAC would not be doing that so easily .
It would help for sure but the advantage either the Mono is the braking and cornering ability, it’s so stable. I don’t even have the carbon brake kit!
@@BAC_Mono If you built a Lotus to the same spec then again it would not be so different . But yes the Mono is a nice car .
@@johnnystoka6625 the key is the weight distribution. The design of the Mono is a lot like an F3 car, although it doesn’t have a carbon tub, the powertrain is semi stressed and is very low down, the (dry) sump is literally on the floor. Compare that to say an Exige with a heavy supercharger mounted on top of the engine or even an Ariel Atom and the difference is obvious. Only something like a Radical can offer the same sort of advantage (and that goes one better with downforce) but that’s not road legal. I do like Elise’s though , much gentler than a Mono but better for country B road driving as they’re less extreme. Thanks for the comments
Sounds like a v12 F1 Car From the 1990 F1 Season Or The 1988 season a little
God bless you
You’re very welcome sir.
You had it for a while now! Are you still happy ? Would you buy again ? How much maintenance needed ? Any issues so far ?
Yes absolutely. It was a bit of a lockdown purchase (you know the feeling?) and a real jump in the dark as although I had owned various sporty cars such as a Honda NSX, Caterham 7 etc (only a 130bhp one) I'd never had anything like the Mono, and never even been on a trackday, so you could call it jumping at the deep end! It was the best decision I ever made, sure you need to put in the effort to learn how to drive a car like this, but it's actually amazingly accessible, and since you get so much feedback, it's a great learning tool. I paid for some coaching by Adam Christo one of the AMG works drivers who works with BAC as well and that was very helpful. I've still got a LOT to learn though, very few people will outgrow the abilities of a Mono. Maintenance hasn't been too bad, they're fairly straightforward cars, although obviously track use will eat the super soft tyres pretty quickly (max 4 trackways per set around £700). The big issue is that as low volume handbuilt cars, the early cars had quite a lot of issues that needed development and as the cars get used more actively those have come out of the woodwork. So for example, my car has needed around £15K -£20K worth of upgrades to bring it up to the spec of the latest cars. Now it's had those necessary upgrades it seems very well sorted. I've done 12 trackdays in a row (including driving there and back) and only needed routine oil changes (which are easy to do yourself) and tyres. That's pretty impressive for what is not too far removed from an F3 car in many ways. The factory are super helpful in working with you and they will tailor the car to your wishes, they also will (for a small fee around £350 each per day if you have a few drivers sharing) send a team of mechanics to trackdays to help with maintenance, advise on setup, fits slicks and adjust the suspension etc. Half the time though I go solo and it's absolutely fine like that as it's pretty fun just on the road tyres. The only actual breakdowns I had had in the three years were a ruptured coolant pipe (it was too close to the exhaust and melted) and a broken alternator bracket. These are both things that have been designed out of the later cars and mine has now had upgrades to prevent them happening again. The other thing about the Mono is that there is a fantastic local group of drivers and we meet up regularly on track in the UK, together with an international owners group for which BAC organise European Tours, plus of course we have a now annual two day private hire of Anglesey with the Atom owners group. So it's a great social thing. Lots of people use them on the road, but for me the track is the natural environment for them. I drive to and from track and go to the occasional car meet like the Black Swan in Ockham Surrey pub meet etc but for pure road use I prefer my 997 or NSX. On the other hand I have no inclination to take any other car on track, the Mono simply annihilates them for involvement and speed. Several owners have GT3 RS's, 675LT's, Pista's etc, but they always seem to turn up to Silverstone with their Mono's which sort of says it all. Would I buy again? Well actually I just have! I've bought one of the last Pre-Mono r cars as I've reached the stage where I wanted the more advanced electronics with auto upshift, traction control and drive by wire throttle which allows mapping and data logging. So My existing Mono is for sale, I'll be sad to see it go, they're fabulous things. I'm hoping to sell it to someone local so we can add another name to our trackday group if possible.
@@BAC_Mono Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! i had the pleasure to visit the factory and had a short drive myself few years ago. Sadly it was and still is not possible to get it registered in my country. i hope with the mono F this will change, but even if it does i'd still have to wait a bit for a used one. Are you happy with the poweroutput ? It looks a bit sluggish once you reach 200kph - should be different with the eco boost engine at cost of the beautiful NA sound. yours has the 2.3 cosworth engine right ? and your new one 2.5 ?
@@XLRation33 yes it’s a 2.3 with short gears that max at 142mph so it does run out of steam on longer straights, the 2.5 has significantly more torque so won’t have that problem. It’s also certainly partly me not being bold enough with the throttle yet. Have a look at this lap by Adam Christo a professional AMG driver in my car, he’s not slow! ruclips.net/video/vIb_tKNMlyg/видео.htmlsi=EgspBGJf0UBxXF_D The turbo will be faster but a very different experience. I really like the NA sound and feel but passing Euro emissions is getting very hard I believe. The regular gears max at around 165mph I think not that you’d ever get there on most circuits. Shame you can’t register them, what country are you in?
@@BAC_Mono different experience for sure, but imagine software and bolt on - 450hp and 650nm … in a Mono! that would be insane :) i‘m from Austria
@@BAC_MonoMy dad is looking at the car on AT right now asking my mum if he should go and see it 👀
🤣 That's Chris in a 152bhp Caterham. He is a good driver, but I would expect your car to give him a clean set of heals...!
HaHa, yes it should, even my early car has another 130bhp. However you can see I was hanging back a little and not trying to overtake, as I really enjoyed following a good driver and learning from his lines and braking points, but also I'm still finding my feet in the Mono. Give me time, I'll get there 😉 Brands Indy is great in the Mono as you go round it so quickly that you can work on improving lap by lap.
@@BAC_Mono I look forward to seeing some footage when you do 🙏 I was very close to buying one myself before I brought the 620r, which is why I have so much interest 🏎
Yes, I will keep posting for sure, it's a good way of me monitoring my progress, My car is for sale btw, I've just bought a new Mono, so if you're ever tempted!@@DMAcidRacing
Well done, mate! Your car performed excellently, and you did too.
Glad you enjoyed it The Caterham driver is very skilful so despite the extra power of the Mono I had to work hard to stay with him through the traffic. The BAC Mono is a lot of fun on road or track.
What a cool car. Brands Hatch is a great circuit in the sim at least looks fun in real life too
Haha, not far off, it does 22 mpg on the road and 6mpg flat out on track😁
I imagine you only manage to do one lap because you have to go back for gas every time
Yesterday was probably the most busy I’ve ever seen it. I didn’t get one lap where I didn’t have to slow for traffic all day.
Yes, it was pretty busy, I guess people are trying to make the most of the remaining warm, dry days. It's a shame I didn't get a chance to drive with you, trying to keep up with a Radical is always a good test of a Mono since you carry such incredible speed through corners with your downforce, it's impressive to see. (Despite their looks, Mono's actually rely mainly on mechanical grip and don't have a lot of downforce.) I really want to try a Radical some time, it's on my wish list for sure. Mind you, at the end I decided to call it a day at 4.30 and pulled off the Clarke corner, drove through the pits and straight onto the A20 to head home without stopping, only a Mono amongst quasi race cars can do that! Great to see you out there
@@BAC_Mono I was behind you a few times. They have always interested me and it’s the first time I have seen one on track so I was looking forward to seeing how well they do. I’ve not long had the car and was only my 3rd time driving it and getting use to the downforce have been an interesting learning curve. You left at 4:30 and at around that time I was loading the car on the trailer after losing all my oil from my rear drive unit and causing a red flag. Hopefully see you out again sometime
I found some footage of your car! I was able to keep up with a bit of lucky traffic before you got away. Mine's one of the early cars and it's a bit down on power. It's an amazing experience though and better than me by far, it's staggering that they are road legal! I've just bought a new one with the 2.5 engine and more torque (the old on is for sale on Autotrader) so if I can improve my cornering, I might have more of a chance next time! Drop me a PM if you're back at Brands, I might try to fit in a couple more and I'd be happy to show you round the Mono ruclips.net/video/5OvKZ9osGfQ/видео.html
@@BAC_Mono thanks for the video. I’ll definitely be back at some point as it’s my local track, so I go a fair bit. Next time, feel free to come out as a passenger. Obviously you can’t return the favour 😂. Im sure I have some videos of you too. I’ll have to take a look
Interesting to see the 2 different lines, 2 cars, 1 rate of pace
Thanks for the comment Yes with the Mono, you can brake ridiculously late, deep into the corner and then ‘v’ the corner so you’re ready to get on the power early. The Caterham had a lot of speed )the power/ weight is similar) but the Mono I think has more neutral handling. I probably can improve the way I take the Clarke curve though? It was great fun driving with a really skilful driver .
Hell yeah !! ❤❤
Scott looks quick
He certainly is, we've got our work cut out. My 2.5 can't arrive soon enough!
Yes I k ow it’s a 993 not a 964😊

A bit anticlimactic how far away the car is from the rail, but still impressive
HaHa, there’s another post on RUclips somewhere they get a bit too close to the rail so I suspect they are being more cautious 😁
my civic is fasterr
Nice run. Did u tune ur engine? engine sounds a bit diff fr my friend's one. Btw what camera u use to shoot? Images so stable
Yea, it’s a 2.3 Cosworth but with a decat pipe and the later 2.5 headers which sounds really good and adds a bit more power. I’ve worked hard on the sound, these cars are hard to record. This one is with two mics, one (the left channel) in the engine compartment and a second (the right channel) on the gear box to catch the whine of the straight cut gears. The camera is just a GoPro Hero 4 black, no stabilisation. I’ve since moved to a Hero 9 with hyper smooth which is even better and simplified to just the engine mic. Let me know which you prefer? ruclips.net/video/1uHzyhlPF2w/видео.html If you check out my earlier videos you can see how the sound has progressed! Thanks for your comments
@@BAC_Mono u did a great job on tuning the sound. Let me try using GoPro and install like what u set. From my previous experiences the car got alot vibration during low gears so action cam mount nearby engine is quite challenging. Hope the new GoPro can shoot nice like yours, keep posting video plz, I’m so jealous you guys can go track easily.
@@vaioboyhk To be clearer, the camera is mounted on top of the roll hoop with a standard GoPro mount. The mic on the gearbox is on a long extension, I wouldn't put a camera down there. The other really important thing is to face any mic backwards otherwise the air pressure will overwhelm any condenser mic and the sound will be very muffled. I've also experimented with a 360 camera on my channel which can give some nice results, eg: ruclips.net/video/4UX5ePdQ2pk/видео.html Good luck and I'd love to see any videos you make!
