Join me in an endeavour to showcase an alternative history of our game, retrospectively seeking the creative footballing artisans who blessed fields with their talents. Find players you may not have heard or watch those you have, in a different light.

Paddy McCourt ... Intimacy with the Ball
Only retiring in 2018, the man from Derry has divided opinion since his breakout onto the football league in the early noughties. Yet this polarity is not something McCourt actively provoked, that is to say, his nature lay among the Maverick mould that incidentally thrived in previous eras.
There has already been plenty written repeating the same dull narrative of a flawed artist, however, I'd rather not digress into that debate at the moment. Rather, I have attempted to showcase via the limited footage garnered, the gifts of who I believe is among this century's most talented players.

Vincenzo Scifo vs. Dynamo Moscow - 1992-93 UEFA Cup Second Round
After carrying the impressive form from his second World Cup campaign onto the ’90-91 season with Auxerre, where Scifo, under the guidance of mentor Guy Roux, began to fulfil a portion of his precocious potential, ending the year in third place and signalling to clubs he was ready for another chance on the most prestigious of stages. Although seemingly a lateral move, Scifo returned to the nati...
Safet Sušić ... 1982 World Cup | Pape's Fleeting Dance in Spain
Debuting five years prior, Safet was the team's main protagonist going into the tournament in Spain, where they faced a group where progression to the next round seemed likely. In qualification the Yugoslav team topped eventual World Cup winners Italy under the guidance of former Real Madrid manager Miljanić. Although deemed tactically conservative , the coach dared to employ a triad of highly ...
Rui Manuel Costa vs. Marítimo - 1993-94 Primeira Divisão
A few weeks from his 22nd birthday, Costa produced yet another recital against eventual fifth placed Marítimo, with an astonishing maturity exceeding his age. Expressing a spatiotemporal virtuosity required to orchestrate Benfica's possession away from home, repeatedly conjuring openings despite his markers, with turns so swift, as to resemble a figure skater. Trailing by a single goal the mous...
Lajos Détári vs. England - 1988 International Friendly
Almost eighty years on since their first football meeting, the kinship between the two nations has produced some classical encounters, including the so called 'Match of the Century', in which the 'Mighty Magyars' of the '50s resoundingly outplayed England at Wembley with approximately 105 000 in attendance. Fast forward a few decades and a player of comparable talent had blossomed for Hungary a...
Aleksandr Mostovoi [Алекса́ндр Мостово́й] vs. Aston Villa - 1998-99 UEFA Cup - Second Round
One nil down from the first leg in Vigo, the sky blue side where desperate for inspiration, that's when the man who would go on to be christened 'EL Zar' arose and wrote an early chapter in Celta's European adventures. Acting as the axis of the team, the talismanic Russian silenced the Villa park crowd with his involvement in all three away goals. During the entire evening Mostovoi opened doors...
Gianni Rivera vs. 1. FC Magdeburg - 1973-74 Cup Winners' Cup Final
Captaining his side in yet another European cup final at the age of thirty, the often proclaimed 'Golden By' of Italian football couldn't sufficiently help Milan defend the title held from the previous season. Against the freshly formed Eastern German club, Rivera's deft touches created various openings in midfield, displaying a rare technical virtuosity and exceptional understanding of footbal...
Enzo Francescoli vs. England - 1990 International Friendly
Playing on the hallowed turf of Wembley for the last pre-tournament friendly, Francescoli treated the English faithful to a myriad of graceful touches, although a combination of aggressive defending and lack of teammate understanding, limited his potential effectiveness. Deployed as a false nine and captain by manager Tabarez, El Principe showed his intelligence in the Uruguayan build up phase,...
Mohamed Aboutrika [محمد أبو تريكة] vs. Senegal - 2006 AFCON African Cup of Nations
They say great players rise when the occasion demands, a phrase confirmed when Aboutrika lead his nation to home final qualification on that February night against Senegal, justifying his nickname as 'The Prince of Hearts', sending the support into raptures with his decisive assist. An individual performance which incapsulated his exceptional associative play together with a distinct final thir...
Vasilis Tsartas [Βασίλης Τσιάρτας] vs. Edessaikos - 1995-96 Greek Alpha Ethniki
In his final season in Greece before joining Andalusian side Sevilla, the tall left-footed midfielder would rank highest on the scoring charts in his domestic league, where performances such as this one in the city of Edessa would earn him the nickname of 'El Mago'. Initially deployed from the right, Vasilis was given license to roam and dictate play across the field in a fashion unique to him,...
Dimitar Yakimov [Димитър Якимов] vs. Morocco - 1970 World Cup
Affectionally known as the 'Poet of Football' in Bulgaria, Yakimov features in the last group game of the campaign, dazzling the León crowd on that balmy afternoon with his fifty minute cameo of masterful awareness and technical proficiency, for what would be his final appearance in an International tournament. An unfortunate and premature end to a side overflowing with talent, as well as for a...
I so paddy play at my team Burnleys ground & after 15 minutes I thought why is this lad playing in the championship ? What a talented player and should have played at the highest level no disputing !!!
love the music on this. Many thanks.
One of gods cruellest tricks to give us a player with the skill of Maradona but give him the body of frank gallagher . All jokes aside , genuinely one of the most entertaining players ive ever seen. Pure magic at times . God bless the derry pele
better than messi
Gaensehaut , schwarz weiss trikot....
Volim te Pape
That Barnsley Goal!!!
Players like Paddy are a dying breed. Don’t miss out on young Mikey Johnston. Let him play and guide him. 💚
Most talented player I’ve ever seen play at Barnsley by far!
PAT MC COURTS FENIAN ARMY 🇮🇪
Better than George best
Easy there, let's not get ahead of ourselves, but still Detari is easily in the top ten most talented Europeans that have caressed a ball
you missed the one from the SPL. there was some mad stat attached to it like he scored first and last goals of that season but I remember he went along the 18 yard box past about 5 players and scored
11:02 the St Pauli game. Will never forget that one 🤩
The bench warmer
could watch him play all day. Superb skills.
Not exactly sure where the source of recent viewers has come? If anyone could link me to the site that would be super helpful
Celtic algorithm
Yeah he looks no bad, apart from Celtic in the relatively poor spl,hes played for lower league teams....some of those goals Vs real Madrid,Liverpool and man city are outstanding 😂😂😂

The Derry pele, what game time he got for us he was a joy to watch!! Hail hail 🍀🍀👏🏻👏🏻

Brilliant talent. A joy to watch. Under a different manager he would probably have played more for celtic. A dieing breed.
Strahan didn't want paddy... Fair enough ... But Lennon shoulda broke his own back Trying to get Paddy in about it....they didn't even try ... Shame on Lennon
Celtic never gave the Boy the chance....wasted his time at parkhead... First time seeing this... I haven't watched 3 minutes yet.... In fact I don't like to say that about celtic... But they did... I can say that definetly after watching only not even 3 minutes of.this video... A different time wee man & who knows... I'm sitting open mouthed & just smh
He had stamina issues. A friend of mine was a senior coach and said he was lapped by all other players in training and his stamina level never seen him last a full game. Great talent though
flawed star ?
Excellent video Paddy was an exceptional talent pleasure to have seen him at Celtic, wish we had got him at 18 this lad with the right guidance would have reached the very top #tekkers
Didn't he stick his hand up a young girl's skirt and get put in the sex offenders book ?
Not the only thing he was intimate with 👀 Typical tarrier
Isnt this guy on the Sex Offender Registry?

Did he get a not guilty? @@JamesBeattie-lz9cc
Probably. All beasts at celtic that's why he stayed while hardly playing.
The Irish Michael Laudrup Had he the stamina and athleticism of Scott Brown he would have been worth £50m no danger. Just look at his balance and close control the ball is seldom more than a foot from either boot and always touched with just the right weight . As for his passing well in all the time he was at Celtic I could count on one hand I seen him fail to pass it to the intended target. That’s why I drew the Laudrup comparison because I see a lot of Michael in Paddy’s play and the way he he moves almost effortlessly past players just a wee hip movement shifting it from boot to boot to put the defender off balance and he’s past already lining up the next. You can’t teach that it’s god given natural ability only a very few in a generation possess. Such a shame he was held back by poor stamina and general fitness.
Enzo Scifo. My favorite player since I was a young teenager. I became a hardcore Torino supporter because of him. Thanks for the upload. 🙏
I see you're a man of cultured taste, I still rate him above KDB for example, he played with more advanced angles and dominated any part of the field with his mobility, I really need to get back to collating his material as there's nothing of note online
@@occultcalcio He had some really nice moments in Mexico 86. Being only 20 years old, ending up in the semifinal against Diego & Co. Scored a beautiful goal in Italy 90 against Uruguay. And had a very nice career in Auxerre and Torino. Reached the UEFA Cup Final 1992 and won the Italian Cup in 1993.
Šta vrede hettrik golovi u prijateljskim utakmicama, kad je u bitnim mečevi a zakazao, te mučio loptu i nas gledaoce, svojim neprecizni dodavanjima i propuštenim šansama! Baš pravi papak, bosanski!
should have played for republic
Poor old Paddy wasn't built to last but he showed flashes of genius here and there a true natural talent in a very slender body. I think he needed a man like Alex Ferguson to guide him and build him into an unbreakable tank, I wonder if Sir Alex ever looked at him because his scouts were always active in Ireland.
According to my uncle who had a season ticket at Old Trafford, Fergie did want him but saw him with a joint or some shite lol. Ferguson was too intolerant and missed out on some genius players, treated Mc Grath badly as well
@@mazooka Paddy was very slight, and not to bright going on past interviews of him. And if he was caught smoking a joint, then that would have been typical behaviour of an Irish lad back in the 90s.Paddy could have succeeded if he had better quality players around him to carry the work load. He didn't have great endurance and would often find himself subbed early or not starting games due to this. I could see him on the left wing at MU given the same role as Giggs as his skill was better than Ryan's in my opinion. The only difference is that Ryan Giggs could run all day. Now I'd say that Paddy liked a point or two and maybe that affected his performances in training and match days. He comes across as a low energy person who lacks discipline with a carefree attitude a bit like a hippy. Well Fergie was very strict but he knew that just one bad apple could allow the rot to set in to destroy a team of players. Overall, I'd say Fergies judgement over the years was very good.
so many underated german players over the years. media has a lot to answer for in this regard
Genio!

Sorry but not impressed by that show reel. Where are the goals, the end product ? Technically skillful but that's not enough
There’s some truth to your statement if we were to look at the basic numbers. However not many players who have been fortunate enough to participated at World Cups, have created as many chances as Susic did inside only three group stage matches. Keep in mind throughout the rest of his career he was a consistently on the scoresheet, scoring hattricks against World champions Argentina and Romania respectively, however I like to view the nuances of the sport not the black and white outcomes. Anyways, thank you for watching, hope you found something worthwhile
