Linda Murphrey - April 5, 2012
TEDx speaker Linda Hyles Murphrey for the first time publicly reveals the secret life she was forced to live as the daughter of the former leader of an Indiana mega-church turned cult. Linda grew up watching her father, Jack Hyles, convert most of the congregation into complete obedience and loyalty to him. She tells how she left the organization and chose her own path separate from the mind control, idolatry and hypocrisy - choosing freedom. Listen to Linda warmly and courageously share her truth of growing up protecting the secrets and witnessing the blind devotion in one of America's largest mega-churches.

I would question the integrity and validity of any women making her life’s work traveling around making slanderous statements about her dead father. Ma’am where were you when your father was alive and was able to answer the accusations that you have made? I never met or knew her father. I was familiar with his name and where he was a pastor and that’s the extent of my knowledge of the man. He could have been guilty and he could not have been. My point is that there’s something very “off” about a grown woman living in victim hood and slandering a dead man. Whatever is motivating her isn’t doing anything for those within Christianity who are genuinely spending their lives trying to make a difference. Maybe she should start a Christian “Me Too “ movement and teach others how to be victims for the rest of their lives. 😂

When looking for a new church we visited two that were definitely Jack Hyles’ worshippers. We never went back. I respect my pastor’s position, but do not worship him. They need to study the life of the Apostle Paul who endured so much for the cause of Christ. Men are men and all living in robes of flesh so prone to sin. We need to pray for pastors a lot, but not put them on pedestals.

Wow … thank you Linda for telling your story. I grew up in IFB churches across the Gulf Coast where your dad was one of the heroic voices of the tribe. As a teenager and a PK, my brothers and I began to question and suspicion all the hidden secrets of the movement, as you so courageously describe - and eventually, after years of keeping our own small town secrets and denying truth, we made our Exodus from the tribe at around my age 40, with my little family intact. Decades of therapy and healing have followed of course. The residual pain and suffering has not been nearly for my family what you have experienced, but I thank God for the courage to speak up and to stand up for freedom and truth, and to finally move forward. Blessings as you continue to share your brave story! 🕊

When someone complains they weren't left any money, it casts a seed of doubt. FBC OWNS the property that's an extension of the church to meet the demands for all the people who are bused in from Chicago for Sunday services and FBC's various soul-winning ministries. The properties had a value in the millions of dollars at the time Dr. Hyles passed but was not OWNED by Jack Hyles. Also, FBC owns Hyles-Anderson College & Hammond Bapist School. Jack Hyles didn't have a rumored personal net worth of $70M - that's ludicrous. Unless there's been a huge economic awakening in downtown Hammond, I highly doubt the property surrounding the church is worth $70M, even today. The whole area surrounding the church was a rust-heap, rundown city. Hey, we're talking about the armpit of the rustbelt. I wouldn't live there if you gave me a house for free and paid me to stay there. I would bet - like most people educated at HAC - Linda probably has little to no knowledge of estate law, asset ownership, investing, and church expenses within an operating budget. Linda grew up in a modest middle-class home in a Hammond suburb. It's the same home that Dr. Hyles lived in for 40 years until 2000 at a sale price of $210k. Someone who doesn't know where Linda came from would think she grew up in a palatial 15,000 square foot home, and Jack Hyles had a garage full of fancy vehicles and wore custom-fitted Georgio Armani suits. This is far from the truth. There was nothing "lavish" about Linda's upbringing. Dr. Hyles drove an FBC church vehicle. I personally had a meeting with Dr. Hyles in his FBC office in April of 1985. I found the office aesthetics dreary and poorly decorated. It certainly didn't look like an office of a multi-millionaire executive. Based on my research, including what Hyles Publications may be worth, Dr. Hyles may have had a total net worth of around $1.5M - $2M when he died in 2001. Dr. Hyles was a minimalist when it came to his personal lifestyle. I'm sure his bank accounts and IRA had Ms. Hyles, as the beneficiary, and their newly purchased condo in 2000 was in both Dr. Hyles and Ms. Hyles name. If Linda, David, Cindy, and Becky received any money, it would have been after the passing of Mrs. Hyles in 2017. I'm sure one of the children would have made sure that the beneficiaries were properly assigned on her assets with Dr. Hyles no longer in the picture. The only major asset that is in question is Hyles Publications. There was an inquiry and concern from Mrs. Hyles after Dr. Hyles passed away regarding the income stream from the publication. From what I heard, Jack Schapp contested that Hyles Publications was under the umbrella of FBC. Linda infers that Jack and Cindy Schapp received a windfall upon the death of Jack Hyles. The only thing that happened is that Jack Schapp went from an average paid employee as a faculty member at Hyles-Anderson College to a higher paid pastor of FBC & Chancellor of Hyles-Anderson College. In short, he received a massive raise with multiple income streams. I'm sure Cindy was put on payroll with FBC as the first lady of FBC with some sort of employee title. As someone who was saved at 18 during my senior year of high school and came from a home with a hard working single mother, I've heard the constant whining from PKs in Christian HS and College about how horrible their life was growing up. I would have dinner and spend the night at my friend's home, whose dad was the pastor and head of our Christian School. I thought his nuclear family was heaven as a teenager. It was like the show, 'Father Knows Best.' However, the PK would constantly complain about his life, while many of us laughed and thought he was very fortunate and overly dramatic. I recently noticed that Linda has a GoFundMe page set up due to her health issues. I would assume that she has reached Medicare age now and shouldn't have major doctor bills. In her defense, the GoFundMe page was set up several years ago before she reached the age for Medicare benefits. Sincerely, I'd be more than happy to help Linda financially if she's still in financial distress and suffering from arthritic pain. Linda's 15-minute speech opened the flood gates for everyone to start sharing their personal experiences with HAC and FBC. Linda never has gone into great detail of the "cult" she refers to have escaped from. The entire video is vague and doesn't provide any proof of her accusations. I would have hoped Linda would have been more accessible and willing to engage with people after this video came out nearly 12 years ago. It can come across as a hit-piece when one goes back to being reclusive. Linda had to know - even though it was therapeutic for her - that the video would have a massive influence on thousands of people who were ever associated with Hyles-Anderson College and First Baptist Church. I'm still skeptical about the affair with Nischik. I believe he may have become enamored with her or overprotective; exhibiting control over Jeanie and Vic's marriage to keep them apart. Not to be cruel, Mrs. Nischik was not an attractive woman in her middle-age to senior years as she sat in the choir behind Dr. Hyles, while he preached in every service. The only picture of them together was when she was considerably younger and marginally attractive, sitting at a dinner table circa late-1960s. There's no incontrovertible or tangible evidence that Dr. Hyles had a physical relationship with her or anyone else throughout his 42-year history as pastor of FBC. Love chooses us, we don't choose love. Dr. Hyles was a man who may have fallen in love with Judy, and his outward expression was to exhibit control over her. I suppose we'll never know. Whereas David Hyles, there's more than sufficient proof that he had multiple pre-marital and adulterous relationships. The only thing that we can be sure of is Jack Hyles went out of his way to cover up David Hyles' abhorrent behavior. If Jack Hyles was a good man and truly cared about the eternal souls of people. He'd be heartbroken by what has happened since his passing. I never could have remotely imagined as a HAC student 40 years ago that I'd be tapping away on my keyboard - in 2023 - posting about all the scandalous claims made by Linda Hyles Murphrey. In closing, I don't condone the disgusting actions of several HAC and FBC influenced pastors, and certainly was shocked and appalled by Jack Schapp's criminality. His actions had more of an negative impact on me than Linda's video. I hope Linda Hyles Murphrey has found peace in her life and no longer dealing with medical issues.

The members of FBC and other IFB churches were Republicans long before the ascension of Donald Trump. Though many may have been Democrats prior to the 1960's social revolution, many became Republicans over the party's support of the pro-life movement. I experienced this first hand growing up in a Christian HS, and ultimately graduating from a Christian College. Many Christian evangelicals became one-issue voters throughout the '70s and '80s. I don't believe there was a big-switch in congress as many want us to believe. Over a 30-year period, the South became considerably less racist, more tolerant, upwardly mobile, wealthier, supported pro-life & family values - and in the process became more Republican. It took until 1994 for Republicans to have a congressional majority in the South.

The IFB church taught me the “ rest of the story” This church had a great pastor who loved people and just preached and lived out the Bible. That church accepted me as newly saved , but still rough around the collar. I dont know about Jack Hyles. We’ll find out one day. I do know I enjoyed his messages . Not all IFB churches are cultic , but some are. I do know there was a Hyles- worshipping church near me that used to be a good church but they got real mean spirited and would even steal our bus kids by getting there right before us on sunday and basically kidnapping the kids by convincing them to go with them and not even telling the parents it was a different church . Very ungodly people. That doesn’t mean they are all bad. I went to a good one. The church I go to now I describe as IB.

I DO NOT WORSHIP JACK HYLES. I'm so broken hearted to see (feel) the hatred oozing through many of these posts. There are no perfect pastors or churches. I AM NOT IN ANY WAY CONDONING BROTHER HYLES SIN (IF, IF, IF , IF) he is guilty. If you say I am, you are wrong. Sin is sin no matter who is committing it. I spent hours counseling David Hyles. I saw him weep. I spoke with his wife of 30 years much of that time. That boy has paid dearly for his sin. Let me leave you with this thought. (Again I AM NOT CONDONING ANYBODY'S SIN). Consider the sweet psalmist of Israel. He had an affair (committed adultery) with the wife of one of his mighty me while he was on the battlefield defending David's kingdom. He tried to cover his sin and when that didn't work, he had Uriah the Hittite murdered on the battlefield. Man THIS GUY WAS A DIRT BAG! I wouldn't want to read ANYTHING this guy had to say! I learned very little about the word of God.... and everything about the philosophy of Jack Hyles. It was mind control and I am thankful to have been able to walk away from that cult. Linda Murphrey needed to not only expose the mess she had endured but also to warn people not to blindly follow men. Imagine how painful her life was. And- what of her brother, Dave Hyles, that followed his dad's shadow into secret sin and mind control? In fact, I am close to a woman that Dave Hyles used and almost destroyed her life. Finally, what of his daughter Cindy? She married the successor of Hyles Anderson College; Jack Schaap. Mr. Schaap is still serving a prison term sentence for his sexual crimes against a minor student at Hyles Anderson College. You have no idea what you are talking about Early Day. So what do you believe? I'm curious what changed. I know you say you left a cult and I applaud you because Ic was part of it too, but what has God revealed to you personally that was a lie regarding biblical principles? God has shown me a lot since I left the IFBC scene and I'm just curious what you now do. Do you still attend church or do you not believe at all?

*Stacy* I can't speak for her, & s/one can correct me if I'm wrong, but I had heard (read online), that she does not attend church a/where. So many people once they get wrapped up in an organization that has been toxic, come away very disillusioned and walk away from it all, altogether.

This video had an impact on thousands of people - including myself - who went to HAC or was part of FBC. Though this was therapeutic for Linda, she went right back into seclusion, and never fully offered any details of the "cult" she was freed from. I can assure you that she reads all the posts, even though she has remained reclusive since this video was posted 12 years ago.

@@davidlynn5385 Then act like it. Do justly. Withhold judgment when you have not been given power to make a judgment and have been given evidence and allowed the accused to face the accuser. Any bitter person cansay anything about a living or deceased person, family or not. That doesn't make what they say so. I knew all the parties involved in this situation, and I give the benefit of the doubt to all, but do not allow any to besmirch any of the others in my mind without proof that passes the shadow of a doubt standard. I also reserve TO MYSELF any suspicions of wrong doing without proof. Hence, I speak out against all accusations that are not accompanied with proof, evidence and testimony that can withstand scrutiny. Bro. Hyles is in heaven, and there is not one sin recorded against him. If you truly know the Saviour, the same is true with your record in heaven; so why do we wallow in the mud of slander so much? There are a few things I hope I learned to not do from Bro. Hyles' mistakes in ministry, but they are mistakes in my judgment, so I keep the lessons to myself, but I teach and preach the lessons through biblical principles, not by attacking him. This prevents me from sitting in the seat of the scornful and enables me to enjoy all the good memories I have.

The IFB movement largely evolved into a mind control cult. It was no longer about following God, it was about conforming to Hyles' doctrine of blind loyalty, and total life choice submission to another man's whims. It's why the movement is mortally wounded, and a lot of IFB churches are still involved in abuse, and cover ups to this present day! "Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that he shall also reap" The movement became a personality cult, now those wicked, depraved, criminal personalities are looming over the IFB like an ominous dark cloud, keeping the light of God's Word from reaching the people.

I survived HAC. I was there the year that her dad died, 2001. I had never faced so much hatred, sexism, and racism as when I walked in those doors. Being judged because of my race, it was painful. I was denied a lot because of it. I got a lot of negative attention because of it. I had to leave after my first year for my own sanity. If you want a degree that you can't use out in the real world, go there. I grew up in FBC under her dad's reign. My adulthood was under her brother-in-law's reign until he was locked up. I left in 2011.

I sat under his preaching for four full years, and *ALSO* heard him on occasion when he spoke out of town. You know what...
