I was born and raised in Jersey, about an hour and a half away from Broadway. I grew up, loving theater, and going to it often. Always with my mother. And, as rabid musical theater fans, we both loved Idina, and Rent was a mainstay musical growing up. So when this came out, we were hooked. Or... I was. She couldn't handle it, too much emotional proximity to some things in her life. So while I'd listen to this daily, she backed off. Then the notice came that it was ending its run. I didn't care what it took. I went into the city alone, desperate to see it. Closing week. It was clear that, despite the packed theater, nobody really knew what the show was. It was magical not only to have my own emotions about it, but to see others going through it. The joy of the start, and the grief as things set in. This was probably the only song where, beyond anything, everyone was silent. Even when it ended, it took a few seconds for any applause, not because we weren't impressed, but because of the emotional impact overwhelming us all. To this day, it's one of my favorite songs ever, and I truly wish it, or this musical that impacted my life so heavily, got more attention. It deserves it. It means so much, and most people who could possibly feel the most from it, might never hear about it.
