The first time that I heard this was Christmas Time in Denbigh, or Denbych, North Wales in 1974.. DB.
It brought me back to Classical Music.
For my second daughter LARA..
ABSOLUTEMENT...
just wow
Another doozy
A doozy
Comparing this performance with the others out there: on the piano side, there is a delicacy in his playing of the fast running notes, and a strict control of tempo in Richter’s playing that is not quite matched by the others, and we’re talking about Ax and Argerich and Kempff - not exactly amateurs! Mind you, I’ve listened to the Russian duo playing these sonatas so many times that they are embedded in my mind, so it’s hard to adapt to anyone else playing it slightly differently. On the cello side, Rostropovich’s bowing is a little scratchier than the others. IMO, I think YoYo Ma’s lovely round, full tone comes from having has the best bowing technique. Fournier is great too, (that’s the French school of Tortelier etc.) although it’s very hard to compare the cello performances, the instrument’s tone being more vulnerable to the technical issues of different recordings made over a span of many years than is the piano. Anyway, they’re all fantastic to listen to; makes me think of my father listening to his records 45 years ago; he was addicted to all Beethoven’s sonatas - piano, violin, cello, even the flute sonata; my bedroom was right above his study and so, for years, I went to sleep listening to Beethoven, and everything else from the earliest baroque to the last of the great romantic period. I could play the entire Beethoven repertoire from memory on the piano, but only if I was allowed to play my own versions, which were single notes in the right hand until I was over 3’ 6” tall. I had and still have individual favorites, like the Kreutzer for example; as a child, singing treble before my voice broke, and playing violin and piano, I used to go for the violin and piano sonatas, but as I got older, I began to think, and I still think his cello sonatas are the greatest; there’s something about those melodies, as the cello introduces them, that just makes my heart, or soul, sing, whatever that means!
Thank you for sharing your memories...! Regards from Mexico
@ you’re most welcome!
This is so different to how I am used to hearing it but there is so much magic in the left hand.

With really good bow control, the violin can be made to express sound like a human would sing. Bravo!
Especially at the direction change on the hilt of the bow. It’s all about wrist control of bowing pressure and location, and it sorts out the top violinists from the rest, IMO. Augustin Dumay does it very well, and he gets a lovely sonorous tone, reminiscent of David Oistrakh. Just an opinion from a part-time recreational musician, that’s all.
This is wonderful Brahms (Dumay/Pires), right up there with Oistrakh/Richter. One whine: why do the recording engineers have to monkey around so much between movements: for better or worse, you need to leave the settings alone and let the artists do the talking. Brahms didn’t know what a recording techie was, but had he found out he would have told you all to set it up ….. and then get lost until the music is over!
Lovely playing!
The opus 102 allegro feels like typical late Beethoven chromatic color, aggressive syncopated and dotted rhythms, and staccato chaos. He wasn’t writing to make money; he was crying out in some way; I feel I am listening to a troubled person, just as I do when I listen to the late string quartets, (which are not very likable). I’ve got no time for all that musicological crxp: I just listen and I know what I’m hearing, just as I know that night follows day, regardless of the astrophysics necessary to prove the point on paper! I hear the fact that he had a very tormented psyche. If a musicologist were to tell me otherwise, I would politely dissemble, knowing from Beethoven that I was right. Why is it that so many musicians over the years have described how they felt Beethoven’s dark moods; how they felt him communicating with them. There are one or two bits of late Mozart and Schubert that also speak to me in that way, but I can’t pick up on it when listening to later works of the Romantic Era, as expressive as they are. Perhaps it’s because those moments stand out more on a background of stricter 18th/19th century musical form. Don’t know. Just saying.
This was playing so intensely in my head yesterday, I had to listen to it. After so many years... Thanks for the upload! Gilels is exceptional.
