I “live” reading too!

I've been on a crusade "against" reading since about 5th grade. I've come realise that this is in large part to my slow reading speed. And I probably read pretty slowly, because the literature we got in school did not engage me. I attributed this mostly to the stories being "emotional", for lack of a better term. I just couldn't relate to them (there aren't many nerds in mid-XX century Polish kid's books), the characters did not behave as I would behave, I couldn't understand their choices. This was not helped by the stories being generally boring to me, which, I now understand, was likely due to my reading speed. A self-fulfilling prophecy, really. I think I felt bored by books, because videos of all sorts were just faster to me. I agree with you about WPM being a useful benchmark, but keep in mind, that just doubling the speaking rate you gave, makes it outpace reading. Not to mention all of the information that can be presented graphically parallel to a voice in a video. Many of the more praiseful quotes you gave come from a time when there were no real alternatives to reading that had the same teaching power. And besides, quotes of famous people are just an argument to authority, with most of your authorites being questionable in the area of actual credentials to talk about reading. You also don't provide a source for EQ being "far more important than IQ", so I guess this is just your opinion, which is fine, but have you considered the double empathy problem? It basically states that autistic people have much better social skills and understanding (empathy) between themselves and that neurotypicals have similar trouble empathising with autistic people as vice-versa. "Autistic empathy" is not really evaluated by EQ (or even brings the score down), so citing raising it as universally positive is dubious. I love learning new things and enjoy relaxing with a good story and both of those things are achieved better by means other than reading books, at least for me. I'm not decrying text as a whole, I've spent hours on wikipedia and textbooks are enourmously useful resources, but making reading out to be the prime form of idea transfer is outdated imo.
