A most wonderful song to celebrate Christmas with. Thank you so much for the upload. 🎄🎵🎶
Sabaton. Christmas Truce. Reyt good choon. I am a metalhead, and so, somewhat biased. Or, Motorhead's 1916. The version with photos of WW1. No more brother wars.
Get them off your on next comes from my days at Altringham ice rink where on the 9pm bell we were always in the bar and we were all allowed on the rink for speed skating and my call was Get em off your on next meaning the skate guards. back in the 1960's
have loved this long for years got back in the 70s still moves me
I saw Mike in Malvern some 30 odd years ago. I laughed so much that the lady next to me told I had better pace myself or I wouldn't last the second half of the show. Magic!
Why did my memory think he was saying "Beau Geste"... 😂 Glad I found this, at last. A masterpiece, Mr Harding 😂
How many centuries has it been now, that Englishmen have answered the Kings call to serve on the continent? 8?
Thanks Mike

On December 24, 1914, German soldiers stationed in the Ypres area began to decorate their trenches, using whatever they could find around them. But even so, they still succeeded in erecting a Christmas tree and lit candles around it. Under the candlelight, the bullet casings hanging on the Christmas tree shone brightly, while the British soldiers on the opposite side were looking over. That night Christmas carols sounded in the German trenches, and the British troops did not lag behind and sang carols as well. Although the language and rhythm were different, soldiers on both sides could feel the "neighbors"' desire for peace and their longing for their relatives in their hometown. It didn't take long for the soldiers to realize that amid the incongruous singing and the blessings of their distant family members, the sound of gunfire disappeared.
My Grandfather and G Grandfather were skippers hard life and Grandfather lost his life at sea, both from Hull. Thank you Mike beautiful song may you RIP.
How much this penetrates to the very depth of the heart. Please, try to read Pierre Loti's 1886 novel An Iceland Fisherman if you have the chance. It's online at Gutenberg.
I love this song! Wish I could find the uncensored version!
we sang this at school in the 1970s, I was 15, I loved it
Baron Prescott of Kingston upon Hull in the County of the East Riding of Yorkshire, ersatz Yorkshireman, failed Secretary of State, fake socialist, duplicitous politician, pretend seaman and successful barrel of lard should be be made to listen to that over and over again until he apologises to the fishing communities of the UK along with his Labour Party cronies for abandoning them in the 1970s.
Someone please post Mike's parody of where do you go to my lovely? PLEASE!
A fan since I was 10. Happy memories watching his one man show on bbc2 with my late Dad. Fond memories of laughing so hard you can't breathe. My dad would look to see if I understood the adult jokes and me trying to hold the laughter in! 😆 Mike your a legend! The scouts stories legendary also. 😀
Met Mike in Kirby Lonsdale when he was promoting his book "The Armchair Anarchists Almanac" While he was signing my copy I said to my son (then only 14 months old) "when your dads curled up fighting for breath, this man is the cause". Quick as a flash, he replied, "I have trouble with the local cider too". He is indeed Englands answer to The Big Yin. Every time I hear his name I hear those immortal words "DO WE NEED A PENCIL MISS WORSNICK"
A stunning song, beautifully sung and always moves me to tears. Played it every Christmas Day for years. Thank you Mike
This is the true spirit of Christmas, always makes me cry 😢
Allan Beswick, radio broadcaster, has played this on his programmes every Christmas for the past 40 years. The 40th year being 2022. Fabulous.
BBC Radio Lancashire. I remember those days. I'm not proper Yorkshire. The missus is. Don't I bloody well know it!
Mike and I were friends for many years, sadly lost contact when I moved to Derbyshire. He is bloody good company. My first wife virtually created his one hit, the Rochdale Cowboy in the Seacroft pub in Leeds. We were having a beer and Mike pointed out an article in the Manchester Evening News about a group of guys had got together to re create famous gunfights. She said it must be hard being a cowboy in Rochdale the spurs wouldn't fit right on your clogs. Mike instantly added the rest of what became the song's chorus and busked a few chords then opened the gig with it. The rest as they say was history, Terry Wogan made it his record of the week which certainly promoted it to the public. Happy days back then.
The spurs don't fit reyt on thi clogs. Yer lucky bugger. Best I could manage was shake hands with Fred Dibnah.
Just herd this for the first time. Made me feel very emotional
The most special Christmas song of all time. 🎄
💖🌹
1915 on Christmas Day On the western front the guns all died away And lying in the mud on bags of sand We heard a German sing from no man's land He had tenor voice so pure and true The words were strange but every note we knew Soaring or the living dead and dammed The German sang of peace from no man's land They left their trenches and we left ours Beneath tin hats smiles bloomed like wild flowers With photos, cigarettes, and pots of wine We built a soldier's truce on the front line Their singer was a lad of twenty one We begged another song before the dawn And sitting in the mud and blood and fear He sang again the song all longed to hear Silent night, no cannons roar A King is born of peace for evermore All's calm, all's bright All brothers hand in hand In 19 and 15 in no man's land And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain And we killed them and they killed us again With Bullet, Bomb, Bayonet, Gas, and Flame, And neither we nor they at all to blame. There was heavy fighting right throughout the day, for one nights peace we Bloodily did pay. At night they charged we fought them hand to hand And I killed the boy that sang in no man's land Silent night no cannons roar A King is born of peace for evermore All's calm, all's bright All brothers hand in hand And that young soldier sings And the song of peace still rings Though the captains and all the kings Built no man's land Sleep in heavenly peace
Why have you chosen not to credit the writer of these words and maybe also the performers. Written by Tommy Fleming and performances by Celtic Thunder that I know of.
@@edwardwithenshaw849 I would only bother with the more complete version performed by Gerry Lynch or the Scottish singer Daniel O'Donnell
Been a fan for almost 50 years and thought I’d heard all your stuff but this was a first for me. Moving and beautiful. Thanks Mike
My grandmother was apparently one of those who were withdrawn from the trenches. Hull Pals company. This was denied by the Army until 1964.
Should read grandfather of course.
Icelandic person listening..... This is beautiful.
God Bless you Mike.
A wonderful an living in the us me and me husband just re watched everything we could find love love him just so sad that I never got to see him live xxxxx kim n gary via batley West Yorkshire
We were so lucky that the family came to Berkeley CA and I was smart enough to cancel the singing class I teach so we could hear them. It was Martin, Norma, Lal, Mike and eliza. It was shortly before Mike passed and he sang this and John Barleycorn. It was a fabulous concert. Martin, Norma and Eliza came a few years later and I canceled class again. Well worth it. Thanks
Have loved Mike Harding since I was a teenager, but I'd never heard this. Absolutely beautiful
Very powerful Christmas song, RIP all nationalities that lost loved ones. If politician's had to fire the guns, how many wars would there be ?
George formby Is more funny
40 years ago this bloke was total krap and is still the same bernard manning didn't rate him after he did a act at his club hey............... Mike play your guitar without strings and a xxxl suit now that'll be more funny yer played out sunshine round about 1982 in fact
Cope. Seethe. Dilate.
Better to be a has-been than a never-been mate...
There isn't a more moving Christmas song than this one thanks Mike Merry Xmas.
In 2014 a brilliant teacher at Stretford High School, Chris Hirst, had the amazing idea to re-enact the Christmas Truce. He made contact with a German school and each school provided a football team. The game of football was played at The Cliff, Manchester United's Training Ground. The Mayor of Stretford invited both teams and sets of supporters for a meal at Stratford Town Hall. I was invited to sing and I The Green Fields of France and Christmas Eve 1914. Thanks for writing this song Mike, it was the perfect choice and was very well received.
Now thats education. I bet the kids loved it and will remember the story and tell their kids about a day of humanity in four years of madness and slaughter.
Truly emotional song always have goose bumps makes what the soldiers had to endure. But humanity is stronger. Hope we never have a 1914-1918 ever again!!!
If one thinks about the devastation to the genetic pool of all those men lost…
Always brings a smile! Cracking work MH
I used to watch him on TV in the 1980s in my early teens and record the show on audio cassette and after best part of 40 years still remember this song 😄 🎵
Was lucky enough to meet Martin and Eliza several years ago when they played shows in California. I had brought a copy of Bright Phoebus for Martin to sign; Eliza told me the family was fighting to get the rights back. Two years later I found the new vinyl release of Bright Phoebus.
A highly underated talent
Mike Harding is a legend.
If this does not explain the futility of war, I do not know what does. And this indeed portrays that it is not Joe Average that causes fighting between countries, it is governments. Governments that have shiny arsed suit wearing tossers making decisions from the safety of their womb like enviroment. I think we as a modern peoples know that the human race is destroying everything about our world.
I will never get over my deep love for the Watersons and missing the ones who are no longer with them-Mike and Lal. I love seeing the daughters and sons of the original family coming along and singing these great songs. I understand that the Copper family is doing the same with their family traditional music. The music speaks their history and groups like these are preserving it. Thanks for posting and where can I buy the DVD that isn't Amazon.
I'm trying to find My Mate Wharfey.
Is this a Ewan MacCall composition or a traditional song?
Neither. It is an original song by Mike Waterson.
@@notseveredhead Thank you. It is wonderful and Mike can sing so beautifully. I appreciate your replying to my inquiry.
@Sandra, I urge you to remember that you can easily check Google for answers (in this case, simply type in *who wrote "cold coast of iceland"* ); this matters bc we all need to exercise our brains and keep them in good shape. The failure to do so is a huge part of why so many in this world are duped by bad actors, which in turn is why we're facing existential crises that are unlikely to be addressed. These problems COULD be solved, but only if everyone were to use his-her-their brain, accept facts, and elect pols who will work for decent conditions for everyone as well as respect Earth, our only home. If I've offended you, I apologize -- but to be blunt, the failure of so many people to use their brains, and the mess they have created, offends and terrifies me.
@@dw999 I take no offense. You are absolutely right. I, however, have spent up to 60 years trying to find a song I heard once and not being successful. Asking in comments gives the answer and the credit to Mike to everyone who reads comments. While my brain might be better served by my own research, I want people besides me to know the answer. btw: I finally found that song I heard once on Mudcat, an excellent place for any ballad enthusiast to look.
I remember my mum and dad used to listen to Mike Harding all the time when I was a kid, they saw him live many times and had all his records. I've been watching hours of this on RUclips all week such a funny bloke
