I turn a huge stainless steel nut into a beautiful lighter
This project was very challenging and pushed my small machines, especially the mini lathe, near or even a bit beyond their limits. I tried to turn a huge M42 stainless steel nut into a beautiful lighter, but it was much harder than expected and took many days of hard work for the lathe.
Weights:
Raw Nut: 563g
Lighter 167g
Cap 24g
So I got approximately 400g of stainless steel chips from the nut and the lighter weighs less than most modern smart phones. ;)

Perhaps this upgrade for the 42 years old Emco mill is a bit overkill. Last year I bought some different cut knurling wheels for my mini lathe. The original holders for the wheels are very expensive, so I made my own one. Now I 'm able to knurl in any angle I want (if I have the right wheels ;) ). Straight, fishbone and also 45 degree cross knurling. A few weeks ago I got the L2 24W diode laser from Atezr and was curious if such a laser can only work with wood or also some serious material like metal. So i pushed it to the limits while cutting and color engraving hardened steel and finally got a little custom radius gauge. After I come, my nuts are lighter too
Now cut a thread with the same pitch and it will make a diamond-shaped knurl. It comes out a little closer to a square or rhombus shape when I do it.
Which wheels did you use? If there was a shot that included the markings clearly I missed it. Also, a thought - getting the washers and the wheel aligned on the shaft looks a little fiddly, why not have shoulders on the brass and a smaller shaft? That way you can have brass (or switch to bronze) as the bearing surface instead of steel-on-steel, and the washers and the wheel will align.

What make and model mill and lathe were you using?
Both are nearly 40 year old Emcos from Austria, the lathe is a Compact 8 and the mill is a FB2. Good old quality!
