A Guide to Weird Keyboards
In this pilot video for my channel, I explain small, column-stagger, split keyboards. This video explains the reasoning behind the seemingly strange form-factor of split keyboards, and how we can take a full-size keyboard and fit it in a much smaller keyboard by using layers.
Let's break it down:
- Take a full-size keyboard.
- Remove the numpad (and get a TKL).
- Make everything more compact (and get a 75%).
- Put less used keys on a layer* (and get a 65%).
- Put keys away from home row on a layer (and get a 40%).
- Stop fingers from moving sideways (and get an Ortholinear keyboard).
- Allow typing with hands at shoulder width by splitting the keyboard.
- Account for different finger lengths by mo...

OMG, your keyboard is ridiculous! Not bad ridiculous, just ridiculous. I'm too old to keep a mental map like that in my head. Even though I can type I still need to look every now and then, particularly for keys like Page Up and left/right. Very impressed you can use that without any symbols on the keys.

Nice video. I'm a court reporter, so I'm used to a totally different keyboard that lets me fly. But I learned a bit more about why I like my Apple keyboard more than a regular one!

Nice breakdown on a variety of keyboards. I wonder if you have tried anything other than QWERTY in your experience? For example, the DecaTxt chord keyboard only has ten keys but still produces all of the keystrokes.

if you get fatigue for extending your fingers, then you get bigger problems than the keyboard, you need to 1. feed properly, 2. workout properly. 3. have a proper routine based on the circadian rhythm. These are obviously lifestyle changes so you need to learn about habit management to be able to successfully change habits.

Cool. Rhough, I don't think the split is as practical as just having a batwing-style mono chassis keyboard. Yeah, the splits can be stacked back to back, but having to faff about with 2 keyboards is still more clunky than just whipping out a batwing/boomerang shape keeb and plugging it in.

I knew most of this, but as someone who already has a split keyboard, and is looking to buy a customized one (like the Iris), could you also talk about keycaps and key switches? I mean I try to understand linear and "clicky", but so many people talk about "choc" and things like that I can't find a good explanation for.
