Had a few skunky days chasing striper leading up to this day. Was doubting my fishing skills. But the first bite makes that all go away. After no action at another beach I decided to move spots. Landed on a nice honey hole filled with good size barred surf perch. All fish were caught on a Lucky Craft 110. #fishing #shorefishing #surfcasting #luckycraft #montereybay #bayarea #california #daiwa #surfperch #barredsurfperch #vanstaal #vr50 #santacruz

Been a slow start of the season for me. A few skunk sessions and some one fish caught sessions. I predict when the fish will bite!!

Can I predict when fish bite?? I’d like to think so. But it’s all about putting time on the water and paying attention to what the conditions are doing and look like. Threw the BattleStar jerk bait. It’s been a tough start to the year, and was over tossing the Carolina Rig. Some bonus clips from a couple 1 fish sessions. @wilderfishing831 appearance, check out his page. 🤙 #fishing #perch #surf ...

Tough day out there, throwing everything I had. Even tougher when the bait guys are pulling fish out next to me 🤣. Still good to get out on the water, would have been nice with more action. #fishing #montereybay #santacruz #surfcasting #shorefishing #stripedbass #vanstaal #luckycraft #perch

whered you launch from?
The stairs at 38th. Usually launch at the capitola wharf
Was there a lot of seaweed in the water? Nice fish! 👍🐟
Not this session. But it’s always changing. Any kind of swell can move things around. If I get grass on the first few cast, I move beaches.
@@caloha7057 I hate the randomness of the seaweed. I always want to fish the beach in this video but every time I go I spend more time taking off seaweed than casting.
@@Ducky2oI totally get it. So annoying
@@caloha7057 I occasionally fish in "your 2" area. Maybe, sometime we'll cross the same sand. Unfortunately, I have to drive near 2 hours to get there. Seaweed has ruined many of my trips.
Amazing how calm the water got!! Looks like a good spot for halibut?
Get some halibut there. Really depends on the year. There hasn’t been much bait or bird activity this season so far. I tried for halibut the other day with no luck.
@@caloha7057 Thanks! Do you use a drop shot white fluke or jerk baits for halibut?
@@theoldsurffisher1943I use the drop shot mostly when going for halibut. Sometimes throw the white and pink Lucky Craft 115.
Wow! You really caught some very nice fish. Do you fish NorCal? Monterey or Santa Cruz areas? You told another fellow to use lighter gear. What rod do you use?
Thanks man. Yeah I fish from Santa Cruz to Carmel, mostly in the Santa Cruz area. My rod is a 10’ daiwa salmon steelhead rod. Think they discontinued it. It’s rated for 1/4-1/2 oz lures. Perfect for throwing Lucku Craft and jerk baits up to 3/4oz. I like rods in that 1/2-2 oz rating. I use 15lb braid.
@@caloha7057 Thanks. 15 braid; most use 30. Do you have a fluoro leader or just straight braid to the LC, Calissa or Battle Star. I'm 80 years and don't wade much and have trouble casting those lures far enough. I just got a super light rod Okuma SP shorth handle 8"6" but have other Okumas and a Hawaiian Custom 10'7". I have fished Twin Lakes, 4th Ave, Sea Cliffs, Sea Bright, Rio Del Mar, and Black Rock Beaches with variable success, I always get there when "You should have been here last week. Ha Ha
That okuma Hawaiian is perfect. I was thinking about picking one up. If you don’t go deeper in the water with waders, fish at the higher tides. Easier to get to deeper water. Look for beaches with sand piled up. A nice slope makes for better structure.
@@caloha7057That sounds more like the Sea Bright area than the father south Rio Del Mar areas. Yes! I always look for deep sloping beaches with near shore "blue" deep water so I don't have to wade. The Hawaiian Custom is a Roles Royce of surf rods. But for an old guy like me that long rod seems to get tip heavy (unbalanced?) after an hour of constant casting and retrieving.
We were out there yesterday, it was beautiful.
How’d you do??
@@caloha7057 a few rockfish, 5 keeper lingcod, and a bunch of shaker lingcod

Pretty awesome day. I fish further North of you out of a yak. Cheers!
Rad!! I’ll eventually find myself a yak 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Awesome
The Carolina rig would have slayed all in that spot! Gg
Oh I know it, but I’m so stubborn and Chose to keep with the jerk baits. I take my Carolina gear out of the bag and force myself to get better. But more skunky sessions.
@@caloha7057 haha yea I hear ya
Sweet! Looks fun dude. 🤘🏼
Definitely starting to get fun, can’t wait for it to really turn on!!!
Great vid man. Just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work and tight lines bud
Thank!! Appreciate it 🤙🤙
You worked 3 different baits with success!! Do you have a got to bait/lure? You don't wade out much at all, yet you got the Lucky Craft out into the catch zone and it looked like there was not a deep trough. I enjoy your videos. I have fished those areas with variable success too. When will halibut and stripers be available?
Thanks for watching, my go to is the lucky craft 110 in shallower water and the LC 115 and Battlestar in deeper water. Lighter gear gear gets more distance on those lures. Stripe and halibut are more in the summer months. Around here anyways.
Hi Thanks for then response. What's light gear and rod length? But what if a striper or halibut grabs it with light gear? I guess you juts deal with it as best you can. Your roads/highway are all tied up now!@@caloha7057
What kind of rod is that? Okuma sst?
It’s a Daiwa Sealine SS ultra light. Older rod, not sure they even make it anymore. My favorite rod to throw from the surf.
@caloha7057 thank you will look into that. What's the length? 9-10ft?
10’ 1/4-1/2oz rating. Light action. Perfect for 110-115 size lures. 3/4 egg sinkers. When I throw heavier baits I switch rods to my okuma.
@@caloha7057 thank you
Human outsmarts fish.
If I can only outsmart them more often 😂😂
Do you touch tips with the boys?
I’m not sure what your asking, but obviously. But just the tip though.
So cal ?
Monterey bay. 🤙
@caloha7057 tight lines my friend 👌🏼
What fish are those?
Barred surf perch.
Nice fishing! Keep it up.
Thanks bud!!
@@caloha7057 no problem! Hoping to see you guys this year 🤞
Yes graveyard steel head but king 👑 🎉
How heavy is that lure compared to a freshwater Jerkbait.
I’m not too familiar with fresh water gear, but the lucky craft 110 is 5/8oz and the 115 is 3/4oz. Perfect when conditions are good. But when the wind turns onshore, I can’t get any distance. Way to light.
Ok Thankyou Sir
Been tough for me in the surf lately. Lagoons have been treating me well. Nice vid! 🤘🏼🎣. Subbed.
Thanks!! Yeah, this year has been tough for me finding perch. Especially on the jerk baits. But really good on the other fish species this year 🤙
Perch bites can be in a small slot. Perhaps if you had been in that spot of fellow down the beach was, your jerk baits would have worked. A great narrative on your thoughts. It's tough to compare baits and catches as there's so many variables involved.
Yep!! That’s part of the fun, and frustration of shore fishing. Figuring it all out
That's the best get another one
When was this? I use the same lure, super spook then battlestar. Not much luck in Nov
It could be where (in what in waters you're using it)?
This was a few weeks back. Bunch of swell in the water lately. Only luck I’ve been having is perch on the Carolina rig recently
@@caloha7057 I was able to catch consistently in September, but hit or miss in Oct

Nice catches; pretty evening. Is that a Lucky Craft? Is that you go to striper lure? Did the anchovy move out?
Yeah I like the lucky craft as my go to. Both the 110 and 115. Bait isn’t thick like it was, but some birds diving here and there
Nice top water action in the surf! Do you fish north or south of Santa Cruz.?

Yeah buddy!!
Awesome channel. Keep it up! By the way, what reel are you using in this video? is it salt water rated?
Thanks!! I use the Daiwa Lexa 300. It’s salt water rated, but not a fully sealed reel. I really like it, been good to me.
@@caloha7057 ok. I just looked it up. Its a has a good cost/quality ratio. Thanks!

Thanks so much. I appreciate it. I’m trying my best to put out vids. 🤙
Big fish
Great job landing that fish. You might want to ask the rod manufacturer for a replacement. I don't think you applied excessive force to break the rod.
Thank you. I did reach out the the manufacturer with a claim. Waiting for a response. Hopefully I can get a replacement. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Enjoyable and informative commentary during your video? Where do you fish mostly AND catch the most: Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz or Monterey beaches? Or are you a SoCal fisher?
I’m in Northern California. Fish from Pacifica down to Carmel. But mostly in the Monterey Bay
