By any chance, does the study guide have any suggestions for read alouds?

Social media is full of misconceptions on Charlotte Mason’s philosophy. She says no formal education until 6 but she NEVER says not teach your child if she/he is interested. In fact, she says to introduce wooden letters and sounds as the child is interested. If you read her books, she makes the assumption that the child should already know letter sounds and names by the time they start formal lessons. She also has a list of attainments that children should be able to do before starting formal lessons. Charlotte Mason IS classical education ( 7 liberal arts) By the time children reach form 3 they are doing far more rigorous work than most modern day high schoolers in my opinion. There is a heavy emphasis on living books, but again in the upper forms children are reading primary sources and speeches.

I like your critique. The things you considered sounded spot-on accurate. We used fun picture books for history and kept the entire subject light. I also found the activities were busy work or fillers the publisher added in as an afterthought. For world history, I chose The Story of the World because the chapters are short but filled with stories about "the little man" and not just the giant historic figures, the geography and consumables are fantastic and easy. It reads like a story and not a school text. Unless your state demands an actual history program, you can feel free to teach with library books your kids choose and then give them a bunch of paint to draw what is in their wonderful minds. Great video.

I am doing this with a 4th grader and I am glad I waited. I also use the audio book and he enjoys listening to it in the car sometimes so he will hear a lesson twice sometimes. The activities are just not that good. I supplement with a lot of my own hands on activities. My kid really enjoyed Beautiful Feet's around the world in 2-3rd grade. It was set up nicely with a little bit of fables, art history, music appreciation, wildlife, and just enough history of the country via picture books.

I started using HQ with Build Your Library level 1 but found history to be too dry. I don't have the strongest memories of elementary school history, but I remember it's all about the wars and monarchs. I recently got the Study Guide after noticing it has maps, coloring sheets, and activities to do. I'm someone who believes in making a curriculum work for you, so I don't think we'll use everything every week, but so far, my kids have been enjoying it. I think the crafts are integral for getting the history to stick and extra reading. At least that's what I remember from all those years ago. I don't know how anyone else gets their kids to sit and listen to the chapters, but I usually read them while my kids are eating lunch or putting puzzles together. We stop every page or so for a bit of discussion before moving on. It's the only way they sit still long enough. I'm considering getting the audio book so we can listen in the car. That works wonders for our literature reads 😆

History Quest is very advanced as is most of Pandia Press’s curriculum, including their science. I hate how the company grades their curriculum it’s very misleading!! I found the sweet spot of HQ for my kiddos between 4th-6th Grade. We condensed the first ~30 lessons of FLL into two or three weeks. Those first lessons are sooo slow, haha. If you're looking for other options for art: - Evan Moor's How to Teach Art to Children covers all of the fundamentals of art, but the projects are much quicker and more focused. - Teaching Art with Picture Books Kids Love uses picture books as a starting point/to study the art elements. - Creative Form Drawing (waldorf-style art) uses full body movements to introduce the forms. This one isn't separated into lessons, so you decide how much to cover each lesson. It focuses on fine motor skills instead of art elements or art mediums.

Charlotte Mason Homeschooling doesn’t mean slow or gentle. I know plenty of people who do it quite rigorously but they just tend to attract that type of people. We read soooo many books and utilize non fiction texts as spines. As your children get older you will see the long term benefits of information retention in books and media that are more entertaining or “living”. We are not Charlotte Mason purists at all through as most now a days aren’t as we much perfer modern living books 😊

I didn’t expand in the video, but I’ve noticed lots of ones who follow CM say to let their children’s first years to focus on play and learning through play, especially outdoors. And I agree that that is a huge part of learning for early years. I just also know in the early years kids can soak up so much info and so I think it’s a great opportunity to give lots of facts. Which I’ve heard CM advises against. Not sure if I have the wrong 🤔 but other than that, I like how you mention many people do CM rigorously.. I think that’s great to hear and I know we all have the power to adjust as needed to make it work for our home 😊

Usually, your west African DNA comes from your Spanish ancestors since during the transatlantic slave trade the Spanish and Portuguese graped a lot of African slave women, as for North African DNA Spain, was conquered by the moors for about 300 years the moors came from modern day Morocco

@@shinkisaragi4369 thanks for that info. I want to look into that history. It’s a sad history but that’s still in my blood.. I wish I could know my ancestors individual stories.

@@homeschoolingboymom you’re very welcome. I recently did my ancestry as well. My results were more or less similar to yours, except I had a southeast Asian component in mine. My whole life I was always told that I I looked either Filipino or Polynesian so I wanted to clear up and it turns out I actually do have Southeast Asian blood, so it all make sense, But yes, a lot of dark uncomfortable history had to take place for us to be here today.

Also, a lot of slaves fled to Mexico and intermarried with natives. Before the civil war, Mexico had a population of natives, whites, and Africans marrying each other. I forgot which politician came down there and was surprised about the intermarrying that he ran back to the south and told the government, which aided in the Mexican American war

Great haul! I have also heard great things about the Burgess Bird Book for Children but after seeing your quick flip through i think ill pass. No color and print font is too small for my Kindergartener to be able to open and enjoy on her own. We love the Berenstain Bears Big Book of Science, its a wonderful resource. Have read multiple times through. Enjoy!

That’s true. I don’t blame you for skipping on the burgess book! I’m glad the flip through helped. And I’m looking forward to the Berenstain book. Much more inviting for sure 🤗

I really appreciated this video, thank you! You explained how this works so well and I’m anxious to use it with my daughter this year. I’m curious if you have used any of the other Brave Writer programs like the Quill or Dart etc? I’d love to see a similar in depth review on how you use/plan them, especially when using the writing as well as the grammar portion.

I noticed a lot of homeschoolers have a soft, slower start, and then slowly add in more things throughout the first week or two. Maybe starting the first day with some colouring pages or a fun activity. Do you just go all in? How does your kiddo do with that? Thanks~!

    • @homeschoolingboymom

I thought about starting slow, or at least having a “fun” day with no workbook on the first day. But I feel like starting right away gets me in that frame of mind of starting strong and not procrastinating (which I have a weakness of doing). I think it could’ve worked out though either way for us. But I chose to go ahead and start on the workbooks on the first day and my son was reluctant to start school again but needed up enjoying it! 🥳 Have you started yet? What do you plan to do?? 🤗
