General Candy (Roger Livesey), who's overseeing an English squad in 1943, is a veteran leader who doesn't have the respect of the men he's training and is considered out-of-touch with what's needed to win the war. But it wasn't always this way. Flashing back to his early career in the Boer War and World War I, we see a dashing young officer whose life has been shaped by three different women (all played by Deborah Kerr), and by a lasting friendship with a German soldier.

Due to a disagreement between the filmmakers and the British government concerning the temperate portrayal of German soldiers, the film was nearly banned in the UK and not released in the United States until 1945.

It’s one of the best films ever made in my opinion, banned by our Winston Churchill for USA audiences until ‘45

thanks for uploading this movie! i only knew the german dubbing, and there was never a GOOD DVD available for this movie (only some VHS-to-DVD without menu, extras, rescanning the movie) aso, so in the year 2024, 47 years after the movie aired, i now finally had the chance to see it with original audio :-) cheers from switzerland!

I remember seeing this movie on TV late 80’s with my mom and dad. It’s actually a great movie. The music is awesome, love big band music. The pilot reminds me of my grandpa Medved he lived in Mapleton UT. ❤

Greetings from Norway! I remember this one. A question if I may.. I'm trying to remember the title on a post apocalypse movie I watched a long time ago.. (30-40 years ago) A man alone in a desert lookalike landscape, on a "draisine" ... on railroad track's, Finds a opening/ hatch in the sand (by the ocean) who leads down to a bunker- like community where a conflict rises. 70's - 80's Anyone?

Chevy dealer told me they chew up cars on the lots something fierce. Saw Alley when it was new. gets a lot of panning but I always liked it - still do.
