I read somewhere that Dicky and Don Johnson the actor wrote this together. On a late night session. Really wish he would have recorded it with the Brothers or Great Southern.
This video is such a gem. I love Dickey’s voice and this tune. So thankful someone captured moments like these for us all to enjoy. I’ve been watching this video for years - thank you for posting!
I am enthralled with this video. Every time I feel like life has me stuck in a rut I find this and instantly feel better about being myself. I have been doing this for twelve years. It is frankly amazing to me that this song was never published. I treasure this tune even over Blue Sky (which is of course also great).
I couldn't of said it better myself. I have always felt the same way about this tune as long as it's been RUclips. Man I really wish they would have record this tune. It's such a cool song, Dicky well always be the man🔥✌️.
That's Mike Lawler who was playing keyboards in the Allman Brothers in the early 80s. If you haven't seen it watch the concert feom the same day as this was filmed (Gainesville Florida 1982) ruclips.net/video/F78XV6fjxCE/видео.html
Here the spirit of spontaneity, human expression, and raw talent are all mixed together in one motel room. Dickey finishes one beer as the golden fizz of another is opened. He gazes toward the camera, sighs and implies as the guitarist begins, "let the flood gate waters flow." Thus, a three minute epic jam unfolds. Roadies grin as Dickey, on his feet, is compelled to move closer to his musical companion. Soon both Dickey and the guitarist recover their botched parts through mutual support. Then, clearly familiar with the storyline, as the townfolk defend Danny Blue to the critic Myron James, Dicky and his mates act out the song cracking themselves up. Mid-chorus two, Dickey stomping like a time keeper, gives a message with his two fingers, signaling 'take it the the bridge' inhales a deep breath, belts out, "Danny Blue, don't let the naysayers get to you... ride those rags to riches, and go on with the show.” Finally rather than singing chorus three, Dickey resorts to the primal rhythm of the hambone (similar to the end of Pony Boy). This "craziest song in the world" sure helps listeners from going insane.
..that guitarist is Mike Lawler btw., who's job was to play keyboards for the ABB during that era. He was quite a guitar picker as well, as we can see here.
Danny Blue Boy by Dickey Betts and Don Johnson :) Love the rumor that Dickey wrote this song with Don Johnson from Miami Vice -- apparently true... The band honeyhoney also does an amazing version live if you ever see them. Here are the lyrics: Well he stood on a southern boy shoe-shine box with a Stella guitar that he didn't play much and he's tellin' all the ladies the gossip 'bout his friends in Nashville Said I just flew in from Hollywood with a long legged *widow* did the boogie woogie all night in the arms of a man named Danny Blue. Said I never heard your name on the radio He said you must'a had some *better ways* Said, "I never seen your name in the flashin' lights," he said, "The lights they musta been busted that night." He run his fingers through his long blond hair and said, "Hey , who's runnin' this show?" Looked around and said, "it must be Danny Blue." Danny Blue, boy, we all know you're a fool big time losers are the only one's know your name Danny Blue, boy, play us one more tune *Come on now Danny gotta* keep us from goin insane. Then Danny Blue hit a tuneful chord and he played a Tennessee Waltz, we danced like only beggars, hookers and thieves can Out of the alley bursts Myron James, he was famous in the neighborhood he had six gold watches on every arm and played He said, "Danny Blue, you singin' fool, you ain't never gonna be a star you ain't never been to prison with Cash or Haggard or Coe" Been a hump, jump, bee-hive then he fell ... ... and she pushed ol' Myron aside said, "Leave him alone he's a king!" Danny Blue, boy, we all know you're a fool big time losers are the only one's know you name Danny Blue, boy, play us one more tune C'mon now Danny gotta keep us from goin' insane Well sing on crazy Danny, sing on don't let them naysayers get to you. Gonna show 'em crazy Danny, gonna roll 'em up and spit them out like tobacco juice. Gonna ride your rags to riches, gonna go on with the show.
That's for sure! Anytime my band gets on the road, leaves family behind, miss them and want time to pass, get buzzed up, have a blast and go home!! Do it all over again!!
It's Mike Lawler who played piano at that time 81 - also famous for his Keytar work. You can see him on the Jessica video from the same time - which is probably to your right. Dickey has the same shirt on - filmed the same day.
Meeting Dickey was a real highlight of my life! RIP my friend.
In one of the best bands in the Mega Multiverse, singing and drinking beer, whoa.

Perfect summary. You captured the mood and subtleties of those magical three minutes beautifully.

"widow" may be "floozy" "Better ways" should read "bad air waves" "Myron James" may be "smilin' James"
"arm and played" should read "arm and leg" At the end of that verse I think he says "he's the king... Of Hollywood"
AWESOME VIDEO!!!!!!!
Hang in there pal. I go through the same stuff. I try to keep my self up but its hard.
I could not imagine. Drinking all you want, fuck all you want and being a millionaire at the same time and also playing the guitar when you want.
That's for sure! Anytime my band gets on the road, leaves family behind, miss them and want time to pass, get buzzed up, have a blast and go home!! Do it all over again!!
Rock and roll in flesh and bone
i believe it's called Danny Blue...........if no one else has already said it lol
Which one...?
i think a switchblade just fell out of dickey's pocket!

That is. Our DICKEY,
Is that Russell Hammond from Stillwater?
spit in my face allmans i love ya
I'm pretty sure it's Chuck Leavell, famous piano player. Played with many groups, Stones, Clapton, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker.....and many more.
who's playing guitar?
Mike Lawler, the Allman Brothers synthesizer (gasp) player and producer during their Epic years and later a Nashville sessions producer.
And "Dangerous" Dan Toler (the Allman Brothers other lead guitarist during that time) is playing acoustic on the 2nd song
