As someone who speaks Spanish myself I just want to say that each language no matter the amount of exposure or difficulty learning still takes at least a few months to even start understanding. That being said, I don’t mind the people who ask if one can speak English because by default almost everyone in the US who was born here speaks English, BUT, as Americans we have to remember that there is no official ethnicity/language in the US and with that in mind the United States themselves are comprised of immigrants no matter what state someone is in. All that being said, do you HONESTLY think other foreign countries want to have to learn English for the sake of you? Does an immigrant speaking their native language really bother you that much? If they’re gonna live in the US they’re going to learn the language because it’s how they’ll survive. YES, you’re completely fine if you ask if there’s somebody who can speak English, YES you can ignore it entirely but it is NEVER okay to belittle someone speaking in their native tongue ESPECIALLY if they themselves are making an honest living.

So, I came back from Costa Rica. The amount of local people that were cool with us when we said we said we spoke a little bit of Spanish and didn't flip out is sad when you compare to how US citizens respond when non-English speakers don't speak English...

Call me racist, but it's usually black people bro, I've worked as a bartender for 5 years in Puerto Rico, my coworker's English isn't that good (she's an old puertorican lady) I serve mostly tourists since I work in Old San Juan, it's sad to see her trying her absolute best to communicate with the costumers and most of them have no problem abd understand her fine, but I've seen a lot a people go crazy and scream shit like this "I NEED SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS FUCKING ENGLISH NOW", there was this one time a group of getto black women were making fun of her saying stuff like "this beaner bitch doesn't even speak English, we're out of here". Man I heard that and I told them how much of a piece of shit they are for saying that, like you're in my island we speak Spanish here the fact we're speaking your language to be able to communicate with you it's already too much, I thought I was gonna get fired but my boss understood the situation and told me to just call security when that happens.

I've work in Japan for 2 years too and i already know the basic in the 1st month and already can communicate within 5 months. I can't even with this people. Spanish guy should have made efforst to learn English instead of relying on translation app, he is working in America and. Though there are Spanish speakers there, the majority of people there are English speakers. I understand that you want guy in red to learn Spanish for the Spanish speaker but that's unfair, why don't you say he also study italian, Chinese, korean, Filipino for those people who are speaking them? I work at an international Airport so I know how frustrating it can be with having someone who don't speak English. BUT I know I can't be mad, because I'm here to assist them, not only that I'm not there to chat, I'm just there to again to assist, I shouldn't worry unless they ask me something to where I have to use Google translate (only time it's an issue is when I don't know what their language is and when they ask me something and they don't understand that I want them to speak when using the conversation feature on Google translate). I mainly only ask them yes or no questions. But that guy is just an ass to demand someone to learn a language just for their benefit. No one should tell someone who don't speak their language to learn it. Let's be honest English isn't easy as others want to act like it is.

I moved to Guadalajara México 10 years ago. Imagine me walkin around here expecting people to speak to me in English, if You move to another country You should speak their language. My parents learned English when they moved to the USA
