It’s all too obvious that you’re trying to push the narrative that Bardi’s migrants were purely Welsh. This whitewashing is both Petty and disgraceful as many people also migrated to England , France , Belgium and the Americas , just to name a few.

In America as a Welsh Italian I had no idea how the Italian culture was so strong in Wales and I’ve been a few times to visit and track down family thru our Canadian ties to Wales. My great great grandmother was a welsh woman. She went from Cardiff and lived in Genoa where she married an italian man when Genoa was still a city of the Kingdom of Sardinia. This kingdom had is capitol city in Turin ( Piedmont, Aosta Valley, Liguria, Nice, Savoy and of course Sardinia). In 19th century in Genoa were living 5,000 welsh families. They imported coal in Italy and exported iron. Her name was Alice Sempron. She had two daughters and one of them was my great graondamother.

there is nothing really to know. Fact 1: German U Boat sank it. Fact 2: the internees fought and clambered over one another to get to the boats. The ships company could do nothing about it. Any alien living in a country during a state of war is immediately under suspicion as some could become spies or saboteurs. English people living in Italy and Germany were treated the same - there is nothing untoward or suspicious about it. Yes, it is a tragedy but so where many many other maritime disasters.

Fact 3 - Internees were locked in holds bound with barbed wire and were abandoned by the guards Fact 4 - Many internees were not enemy aliens but British of italian extraction, some even WW1 British Army veterans. Fact 5 - the British government deliberately failed to paint the ship with red crosses and thus invited attack

I really enjoyed watching this series but your uncle is correct that being born and living in Wales doesn't make you Welsh - you are definitely Italian immigrants who have not integrated as far as I can see. Wales has its own language and culture and it doesn't appear from these vids that you have any close indiginous Welsh-speaking friends or family and are living in 'Little Italy in Wales'. Correct me if I am wrong. It is the sad story of many immigrant cultures that they seem to ghettoise with those of their own culture and do not integrate fully with their host nations. x

Robin Daniels. I live in Spain and the British ex pats,of which many have lived here for 30 or 40 years cannot say more than gracias, adios and la cuenta( the Bill). I personally think that the Welsh Italians have done far better than that, wouldn't you say? Not only did they provide a very necessary service to the Welsh ( by keeping their café's open untill late, whilst in those day's everyone else closed at 5:30) community, but they also did this with tremendous humility. Meanwhile many Brits in Spain( I wish to stress not all, thank God)seem to be here dealing in drugs( that's why it's often referred to as Costa del crime)getting blind drunk, vomiting all over the place, serious fighting brawls using knives and peeing wherever they fancy doing it. The Welsh Italians were and still are clean, hard working, humble and pleasant people. The list could go on and on. So think... before you make stupid accusations !!

Lovely to see pics of Bardi - I think I have to arrange a research visit - the church looks incredible and although there seems to be a strong focus on food in these vids it would have been nice to see more of the local achitecture and other cultural interests. I am also rather surprised there has been no cross-fertilsation of foods - no mention of Welsh specialities like the delicious 'pice'r y man' (Welshcakes) nor a Sout Walian delicacy called 'bara lawr' (laverbread) - an acquired taste of seaweed in oatmeal which is a rare and important plant-based source of B12 as well as iron and iodine www.bodnant-welshfood.co.uk/blog/laverbread-2900.html. I well remember an Italian owned cafe in the nearby village of Pontrardawe which was near my grandfather's and it was run by two elderly brothers and their sister - the Rengozzi family. I knew about the Bardi connection and was hoping to discover more about the town. Maybe that will be in part 2 which am about to watch. Thee is also a very famous icecream parlour in Swansea/Mumbles called 'Jo's' and I suspect it is of Italian origin but have to do more research.
