Anthem of Germany (Deu/Eng)
The Holy Roman Empire was already weak when the French Revolution and the ensuing Napoleonic Wars altered the political map of Central Europe. Hopes for the Enlightenment, human rights, republican government, democracy, and freedom after Napoleon's defeat in 1815 were dashed, however, when the Congress of Vienna reinstated many monarchies. In addition, with the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819, Chancellor Prince Metternich and his secret police enforced censorship, mainly in universities, to keep a watch on the activities of professors and students, whom he held responsible for the spread of radical liberal ideas. Particularly since hardliners among the monarchs were the main adversaries, demands...

To equate Frederick The Great and Prussia with woke progressivism is a ludicrous perversion of history.
Very good ,however, I don't hear any mention of Frederick's friend being his lover ???? as he was a homosexual and that is why he was forced to watch the love of his life being executed ??? sending Frederick into and catatonic breakdown after which he emerged a psychopath???? Yes ????? Am I wrong ????
As a Prussian I appreciate the documentary, but he left out the most important facts about his father. His father was not just an authoritarian and aggressive father. He was the pioneer for meritocracy and pragmatism. He was the first king in europe. and possibly the world, who was against luxury and money wastage.
It's funny how Clark says Frederick built a "progressive" regime which started aggressive wars of conquest and annexed foreign territory without the consent of the people living there. Not progressive at all. In fact, the exact opposite of progressivism.
You clearly haven't bothered to try and understand Professor Clark's overall message. From about 1600 to the mid-19th century Prussia was one of many German Kingdoms and duchies. Sweden threatened from the North early on, but even after its power faded Prussia was still confronted on three sides by France, Austria and Russia. A progressive German state in Europe could be aggressively expansionist without falling into contradiction, because the German states prior to Unification could be picked off one by one. Unfortunately Bismarck and then Kaiser Wilhelm II were not great individuals like Frederick had been.
@@neilpemberton5523 I've read most of the standard biographies on Frederick, as well as extensive works on Prussian history. The attack on Austria-Hungary was an explicit war of conquest, without cause, and hence not progressive. Even in the mid-18th Century, this was unusual for Europe, and is the reason Prussia was opposed by every major power except Britain. No one was "confronting" Prussia when Frederick attempted to annex Silesia. Had Prussia been less "aggressively expansionist" it's doubtful disasters of the magnitude of WW1 and WW2, both started by German aggression, would have occurred in the 20th Century.
@@LTrotsky21stCentury Your point is well made. However in the 18th century was possible to mix Enlightenment and empire-building. Frederick obviously believed in a state with progressive values to benefit its people, but at the same time wanted this same state to expand and take its place in history. Post-imperialism was still two centuries away. Churchill at the end of the imperialist age also held contradictory beliefs, standing firm against Nazism in the name of democracy yet at the same time resisting Indian self-determination. History can be incredibly complex and confused, defying easy categorisation, especially at times of conflict and rapid change.
I mean Nazi jerks. David from London in the Philippines
Never link Freddie with dumb Zazi jerks. And worse the neo Nazis of today. I know a few. Cowards who have not the courage to go to war. Never listen to classical music. By the way, l wonder how the king had time to learn the flute. I stopped for a few years, and can't play well now. Telemann said, "if l don't practice for one day, l notice it, if for two days, the audience will notice it. David from London in the Philippines
Great documentary! Thank you professor Clark! One caveat, I would have liked a mention that the Duchies of Prussia and Brandenburg had been built by eradicating and assimilating native Balts and Slavs. In later centuries it was echoed in the official Prussian policy of forced assimilation of Poles in the newly acquired Polish lands. In this light, Nazis’ hatred of non-German untermesch has deep historical roots.
Talking about the well trained and motivated Prussian Army, while the video shows the not so well trained and much less motivated Bundeswehr... .
They look and march like Americans these days, shame the FRD couldn't have adopted the DDRs more Germanic marches and uniforms when they unified I'm 1990.
@@bazzatheblue what's the marching score they're playing at 5:24? Uk uses that as well...
Christopher Clark is a deeply irritating narcissist.
Agree ! I prefer my historians to have white hair, tweed jacket with elbow patches and a pipe. ( including the female ones ) !
I watched this documentary as a kid and it changed my interests forever
How
Me too!
I feel exactly the same way. Clark is so interesting and easy to listen to.
Lavish and luxorious life is the rule for every monarch but federick break it and live in simplicity
Why on earth does he bring up Hitler? What does Hitler have to do with Frederick the Great?? Very malicious.
Guys,if German schools and universities don't have to teach anything about great german people like Otto von Bismarck and Frederick der grosse, they should abolish history period altogether and just let the students learn history from miscellaneous sources like Google and RUclips.
Delightful
Nice mean
Needy Fred XD
I am astonished with the host of this documentary more than Frederick the Great>>>>>>LOL
1:25 The only person Federick the Great prefigures is the Anti Christ
You think this king a greater anti-christ than yourself? You lack imagination and a wise fear.
Fortune has it in for me; she is a woman, and I am not that way inclined. Frederick the great. Source:en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_the_Great#Sexuality He was gay AF.
Way too much of the narrator. Uninteresting
Yeah, why couldn't have Frederick the Great spoken for himself?
You cannot blame Frederick for NS regime if you would close your mouth and open your eyes you would know from the very beginning what were to become German tribes their culture was preyed upon by Rome whos deliberate expansion pushed into every corner of Europe disrupting every culture it made contact with varus set out to humiliate Rob and shame them into slaves of the empire..and were sent packing fast forward to the 19th century and once again Roman influence again.. Mussolini influences the tribes again in open rebellion 1&2 world war but you persist in covering your tracks with infinite lies rather than admitted all of Europe preying on the prussians created their own misery by cultural interference over and over again try to deny that! It smacks highly of liberal guilt
His "friend" Von Katte? Lol, they were lovers, say what they were dammit.
There's no evidence that Frederick II was gay, except for rumors.
Conrad von Hötzendorf once again blundering things for Austria?
We should finally start to rethink both Austria-Hungary and Kaiser's Germany. Warmongers? Not really and surely not more than others. More likely societies in rather successful modernization process. During 1870-1913 Germany had GDP growth per capita about 1.5% annually and Austria-Hungary 1.7%. And claim that only German population in Austria-Hungary was benefiting is utter nonsense. In fact before WW1 Slavic and Hungarian parts of Empire had clearly faster economic and social growth than that in German speaking Austria.
Eee wait a moment. Didn't he forget about something while listing neighbours of Prussia? Where the fuck is Poland in 17/18th century? Belonging to Russia already? Nope. The Westerners ignorant as always about Eastern Europe.
France should never be glorified as "victorious" in regards to WWII. Shame is more fitting.
True.
founder been searched but unknown i am looked probably be one ?
wanted accurate info on subject, notice it's made buy BBC lol, the search continues.
C. Clark, an Australian by Birth, speaks perfect German and must have lived Under Friedrich der Grosse!
Let me see if I get it! Frederick the great was not a war mongerer but believed in prosperity of his subjects and was immensely tolerant. How can Hitler portray himself as a follower/ admirer when in reality he did the exact opposite being an imperialist and fascist. Isn't he a perfect example of hypocrite. How come so many people trusted him blindly without noticing the incompatibility between his actions and claims. P.S: if you say that the answer is 'right propaganda', i would agree because the same is going on right now in my country too.
thank you for I am a prussian im a clouse and a von reader I married a Scotsman...thank you for your video...
Professor is eloquently making a point how great der Alte Fritz was. Unfortunately there was no mention of one of the greatest thefts in the history, which this Übermensch committed. When he attacked the Silesia, his group of clever Jews were counterfeiting already polish money and circulating them to pay for his military genius. After his troops took Leipzig and Dresden in Saxony, they also took those cities' mints with the minting dies, which were used to produce the money for Saxony and Poland, which was at that time ruled by the Saxon Friedrich August II. When this happened, minting debased money was a breeze. This was going on even after the war was long over. Last Prussian counterfeits were minted around 1769. I guess, this interesting twist in this brilliant king campaign was probably not befitting the great vision of that remarkable ruler. Even dr. Goebbels would be proud.
So... he printed money with the mints of the cities he conquered? It seems the arrangement he made with the Saxon is more important than any clever folk.
I guess Fredrick was thick
Vielen dank für das Teilen
Frederick the great died in 1786 and has obviously no connections to the 19th century. WTF
HEY POLAND AND RUSSIA, GIVE US BACK OUR COUNTRY!!
If you look into the faces of Bundswehr marching, their facial expressions show no pride or dignity for their country. The German people have been shamed, belittled and castrated by feminist and destroyed by leftists. Watch any of the videos of the German soldiers of the Reichswehr, Wehrmacht or SS marching and look at thier faces, they have pride, dignity, honor and their nuts. Rip Deutschland - Prussia
6:44 a Asian playing a flute?! I am sure you wouldn't see that in Prussia during the late 1700's!
Hitler, the American stooge and puppet and his pathetic entourage were the enemies of Prussia and Europe
What enigma? TV documentaries are all bullshit.
See the other parts and maybe you will get it

The greatest tragedy here is that the two greatest German leaders of all time (Fredrick and Bismarck) have been hijacked by braindead nationalist idiots who do not understand how they achieved their greatness. Both leaders were great because they knew how to play the alliance game as well as the military game, and when idiots like Wilhelm and Hitler tried to achieve what they did through military power alone they failed miserably.
How do you dare to call Wilhelm II. an idiot when it was clearly the British which plotted against Germany and planned the "Great war"? Extract from a conversation between the British top politician and chief diplomat *Arthur Balfour* (1902 - 1905 British Prime Minister, 1915 - 1916 First Lord of the Admiralty, 1916 - 1919 British Foreign Minister) and US diplomat Henry White from the year 1907. *BALFOUR* : _„We are probably fools not to _*_find a reason for declaring war on Germany_*_ before she builds too many ships and takes away our trade.”_ *WHITE* : _“You are avery high-minded man in private life. How can you possibly contemplate anything so politically immoral as provoking a war against a harmless nation which has as good a right to a navy as you have? If you wish to compete with German trade, work harder.”_ *BALFOUR* : _“That would mean lowering our standard of living. Perhaps it would be simpler for us to have a war.”_ *WHITE* : _“I’m shocked that you of all men should enunciate such principles.”_ *BALFOUR* : _“Is it a question of right or wrong? Maybe it is just a question of _*_keeping our supremacy_*_ .”_ (Source: Allan Nevins, „Henry White - Thirty Years of American Diplomacy", New York: Harper Bros., 1930, pp. 257-258) (Link to the scanned book pages: valjean72.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/nevins-allan-henry-white-thirty-years-of-american-diplomacy-pp_256-259.pdf )
