Winter Sowing in Ziplock Baggies UPDATE
I have a steep hill too and was wondering if Id need a pump to push water up. My hill is about 10 ft high and then there is a 4 ft vertical height where more plants are planted. Do you think the water will reach up there?
Mine was about that steep too. It all depends on your water pressure. Try it. I was amazed when ours worked because there was no information online.
Do these need to be in full sun?
For winter sowing, I like to out my bags in full sun. The only special care you need with that is if the temp goes above 70, you will need to open bags during the day. Excessive heat will kill seedlings
Loving this..going to try a few👍🏾
Happy Gardening!
@@wintersowingwithelizabeth2286 - Thank you 👍🏾
What’s next with those bags ??
What’s next? Well, we moved and I took my baggies with seedlings with me in the car and transplanted in the new garden. I used them this year to wintersow a few different flowers and I also spring sowed more flowers. Follow me on instagram to see everything. @wintersowing
Just wanted to say thank you for this info. I had great success this past winter using the plastic bags. Will definitely do again.. adding more seeds to my list next year.
Great to hear!
What time of year are you starting these? I’m in Canada, zone 5b
For winter sowing, you can begin between January and March. You can begin annuals now if you want. You just need to be careful with late frosts
This looks great 👍 Does it work even when it’s snow outside?
Yes, it works best when it’s freezing cold snow…. Even in Alaska @fridaemilsson8868 Sow your seeds between January and March
Very beautiful and I love the arrangement of all the plants and flowers. TFS!
Thank you. We moved last year, so someone else is enjoying the garden now
Wow that came out beautiful!
Thank you
I don’t understand what the clothes pegs are for?
To keep the beg open for rain and snow
What size bags do you use?
@catherineatkinson1729 One gallon. Please see my other videos for step by step instructions
What size bags do you use?
looks like 1 gallon size.
Thank you
I love this idea...seems easier to water yourself, instead of waiting for rain or trying to water through hole tops of jugs. Thank-you for idea and video
I'm confused your video said in the day you'll open the bag if it's 70° that's why I questioned it as winter here is around 2° - 10° with occasional -1° and -3 °. When I saw the post on fb I was excited I could grow them outside but it threw me when you said 70° in the day. I hope I made sense there.
I am not opening the bags until Spring when temps hit 70. I only open them during the day. The rest of the winter (January to March), the bags stay 3/4 closed, with only a small opening for rain and snow to enter. To wintersow, you only need cold nights. Did you see the list of seeds you can wintersow? Since it's not spring, you can sow annuals in ziplock baggies or anything that doesn't need cold stratification. You just need to be careful if the weather gets hot. Heat will kill the seedlings. Also, if you sow annuals, you will need to cover them if it goes below freezing. Perennials don't need to be covered (if they have been wintersown (sown in the winter outside in bags or jugs) because they are used to the cold and can then be transplanted right into the ground. Hope that helps.
@@wintersowingwithelizabeth2286 arrr thank you.yes I looked at the list as ive got cosmos and petunias in the kitchen at the moment.which is a pain, so outside wouod be good.
70 ° in winter?? 70° is summer in the UK
70 in the Spring. It doesn’t get up to 70 in the winter where I live.
Love this idea. Have been thinking of starting winter sowing for a while. My question is when do you start your seeds off and what time of the year can you then plan them out?
Between January and March. You transplant into the ground when they have their first true leaves. Annuals can be sown at the end of March. I will be transplanting my lupine in April. Thank you
Thank You so much such a wonderful idea. So much easier and cleaner then anything else. I am from England and was struggling to work out away to start seeds with my 2 granddaughters who are 5 and 2 in San Francisco. They don’t have much gardening knowledge and we didn’t want have a big financial outlay or a mess everywhere. Their mother is going to be so happy that we have a easier way of starting seedlings! 😊
That’s wonderful. In San Francisco, they should probably begin in January. If temps get above 70, air the bags. Heat will kill seedlings. Airing the bags is super easy, though. Such a fun project with your grandchildren!
This is great!! Have you done this with root crops?
@ourmouthwateringmountain Carrots
Very nice plants! Also this sng always reminds me of The Parent Trap 😊
I can't freakin believe this!😮 Like tell me you're a genius without telling me you're a genius like work smarter, not harder. Honestly I can't believe I didn't think of this😮 Thankyou 🙏!!!
@magwed4120 thank you. Not a genius…. I just couldn’t stand the messy jugs and recipients blowing all over my yard.
👍
Brilliant. Have to try this!! Wish I’d seen it a month ago 😄👍
Got to try this❤!
Thank you! This looks so much easier than the jugs. Definitely gonna give this a try 😊
💚 Thank You! 💚
It’s gorgeous! I love the use of arborvitae and smaller shrubs to add dimension. Also, the parterre lines are really clean!
@eamcbmsc thank you. My husband gets credit for the straight lines!
Wow. When do you start these? What are the clothes pins for?
January to March. The clothespins hold the beg open for rain and snow. Check my other videos for step by step instructions.
I think I'll give it a try.
Hmmmmm. Quite interesting!!!
Interesting idea!❤
Glad you think so!
This is great, thank you!
Thank you so much!❤ I enjoyed this video. A drawing of your garden with irrigation would help. Does most of the water go to the bottom of the hill? Do all the plants get the same amount of water?
We moved last year. Surprisingly, the watering was pretty even. THe plants at the bottom got pretty much the same amount as the top. In our new house, we have a hill that goes down and it's also functioning well!
Genius!! 🎉👏 thanks so much for sharing!!
What zone are you in? I’m in Houston zone 9a.
I was in 7a (we just moved to 8). You can wintersow in Houston, but you will need to keep the bags in the shade and be super careful in the Spring to air them so that the seedlings don't cook inside the bag (or jugs...or whatever you use).
@@wintersowingwithelizabeth2286 just curious why do you put them in the shade and not in the sun? I’m very new to this.
Because it's so hot in Houston that once the temperature hits the 70's, the seedlings will fry inside the wintersowing container. Please see my other videos to see how I do this. In my zone, I keep them in the sun, but in your zone, it might be too hot once temps begin to hit the 70's.
@@wintersowingwithelizabeth2286 thank you
Great video keep watching every year with your old video and this one
@christiensharden3325 thank you. We moved to a fixer upper this year and my husband plans to make me some raised beds. Hoping to begin ws’ing in February
When should we start planting for winter sowing in 7a?
January to March @bowenbabe7263
Mankind, you’ve got this!!
❤
Wow
I love this ideal do you have to use miracle growth soil. Can you use any other brand can you use the zipbag planting for inside?❤❤
Hi. You can use any potting soil, except for seed staring soil, which dries out too fast.
Thank you so much for sharing. I came over from Garden Answers. I was looking for a cleaner, more compact way to winter sow. Will definitely give it a try this year.
It's so easy and everything can be used from year to year. We moved in April/May and I just picked up my baggies and brought them to the new house to plant there!
Es maravilloso el lugar, espero poder realizarlo en mi parcela, saludos desde el litoral de los poetas V Región de Chile 🇨🇱❤️🌻🌞
How often do you water
The bags are 3/4 closed, which creates a greenhouse effect. I only water if it hasn’t rained or snowed. All you need to do is puck up the bag to see if it’s lightweight and in need of water. If you water well when placing bags outside, You shouldn’t need to water until the weather warms up
Thanks for the great video. Do you use a completely different water line and irrigation system for the grass?
Yes, completely different. Thank you
This is super helpful, we have a similar issue with the sloped backyard and have given up on a lawn. Transitioning to a whole flower bed but still having issues with watering the garden to get our drought tolerant plants and native’s established
I hope it works for you! We just moved and now we have a downward hill in the back yard!
How did it work out? I am curious as I live in Connecticut and want to do this too.
It worked great!
You sound isn't loud enough for me to hear.
Cool! What zone do you garden in? My garden lives in zone 6.
7a/6b. Thanks
Your lovely thank you.
Wow amazing, you're method is very smart and dirt cheap!!
Thank you. It’s definitely easy and cheap!
