A channel created to reproduce the musical work of Brian O'Higgins. Throughout his life, O'Higgins wrote thousands of songs and ballads all aimed at awakening and strengthening the national consciousness of the Irish people. In the early 20th century, British law mandated all shops and business carts to have the owner's name inscribed in ‘legible letters.’ In effect, this meant that all non-English inscriptions were forbidden, and Irish speakers were arrested and prosecuted. It was in one of these prosecutions that Pádraig Pearse, a qualified barrister, appeared in court as an advocate for the first and last time.
The defendant was Niall MacGiolla Bhrighde of Donegal, who lost the case and was convicted and fined. Pearse wrote of the decision that "it was in effect decided that Irish is a foreign language on the same level with Yiddish." As a skit on such instances of petty tyranny, this song was written in 19...

In 1922 the Free State army, backed by the British government, began to wage war against the forces of the Irish Republic. Throughout the conflict, over two hundred Republican prisoners of war were murdered by firing squad or by more gruesome methods, such as the Ballyseedy martyrs who were tied to a landmine and blown up. In the interests of 'unity' the gallant fight conducted by the Irish Rep...

After reading the humiliating speech given by John Redmond at Woodenbridge encouraging the Irish Volunteers to join the British Army, O'Higgins was red-hot with anger as he penned these lyrics. Soon this song was known, recited and sung throughout the length and breadth of Ireland.

This is an anti-partition song written in 1914. It serves as a testament that Irish nationalists were long aware of the dangers of partition and sought to rouse the men of Ireland against it.
The Irish Volunteers

When something of a miracle brought the Irish Volunteers into existence in November 1913, the roads of Ireland were again filled with songs of freedom and the sounds of marching men who were directed and inspired by an exalting purpose. This is one of those songs, sung to a lively old Irish air.

No Surrender from the best part of Ireland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 !

Thanks for the song. Any idea of what unit is in the photo?
"Let no Irishman throw a stone at the foreigner; for he may hit his own clansman. Let no foreigner revile the Irish; for he may be vilifying his own stock." - James Connolly.
Don't forget she was Vanessa Gore-Booth, an aristo who not only was the first woman MP and TD and gave up her privileges for the poor of Ireland, suffered imprisonment and humiliation and illness, but was betrayed by her erstwhile 'comrades' such as Cosgrave and was 'disbanded' at the moment of victory!!!!
I heard the lion-hearted Tom Barry speaking with vehemence saying Ireland would never have got freedom without the women and it sickened him to see them written out of history.
Morris O’Neill is one of my in-laws law and it’s nice to learn about him unfortunate how he died so young

Still waiting to find out who is singing this song.🤔
Sean Keane is the only current traditional singer who could match this rendition by Mick Flynn from Milltown Malbay.

Erin go braugh! Our people will survive the madness of the left! Immigrants go home!
We are a nation of immigrants. And we always will be. Don't ever forget that. You should be ashamed to call yourself "Irish". Our ancestors migrated to America long ago fleeing tyranny and famine, seeking a better life.

Thank God I was privileged to see the actual scene of those glorious days for Ireland. In 1977 I spent two and a half months in Dublin and every trip to the Main Post Office Bldg. to pick up my mail from the USA was like a real pilgrimage for me. I prayed to God that if just a scintilla of the bravery and courage of those few who bore the fight might somehow reach me and teach me then my life might be successful in some way that could honor "those few who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew."
A beautiful sentiment.
The singer here is Mick Flynn from outside Milltown Mallbay in Co. Clare. I think he should be acknowledged here and not just ignored. Mick died about 10 years ago. When in form, he was, in my view, as good as the very best of them.
Sorry to hear this...
It's Colm O'Donnell from Co Sligo
@@BKilcoyne-xg5sv It is indeed Colm O'Donnell. Even a better singer than Mick Flynn and that's saying a lot. Sorry, I got this wrong, you are right. Thanks.
