Last minute roadtrip to Lake Murray State Park in oklahoma. After the lake we head down to Dallas for a crawfish boil and then back home to OKC. The van did great overall and will definitely be getting some upgrades in the near future.

Took the Subaru swapped 72' Bus on a winter exploration to test out its cold weather capabilities. After the starter failing instantly, the bus did great! Were planning on fixing this bus up and making some longer trips with it this spring.

That forest road 5 is way too close to the homes in the area. Very weird that it's the national forest.
@NigelNaughton it took us a while to get there from Angle Fire, we couldn't see any homes from camp so it was remote enough for us haha
Feel your pain going through a similar problem. Trying to narrow it down and i think my radiator fan is going out. Either that or the sensor is not telling it to turn on as it should. Good luck, hope it all works out
@nomaderic it's a frustrating problem to have! I'm looking into swapping a mishimoto 12" race fan into the van instead of the oem fan on there. Hopefully that will help 🤷

Yeah I admit to having a problem lol i have been buying parts to continue this engine swap. We're planning on going all out on the 81 so it'll be a long term project

Haha yeah this was one of our more challenging trips but she toughed it out with minimal complaints 😂 This van has about 240k on the body, we've put about 20k on it since the motor swap

@daviddesantis7872 Yeah NM is definitely one of our favorite places to go, I bought a cheapo gauge pod on Amazon and was able to mold it using a heat gun

The diesel vanagon is so weird, we never got them in Australia. They would have been great. I would have tried to bend the pipes instead of all those joins.
The original diesel vanagon was very underpowered and kind of a dud. Fortunately you can swap one of these TDIs into any van! Bending aluminum is a total pain, It really likes to crack. (And i dont have a pipe bender lol) But for the stock motor the 2" pipes even with welded joints have proved to be more than enough
What the what, the blue hole is a must do cold plunge. Headed to NM in a week and a half can't wait to see my mountains. I grew up 18 miles south of Angel Fire and my family is still there.
Unfortunately it's closed indefinitely 😢 part of the wall collapsed and blocked the inlet spring

Can you share who did your wiring and ECU reprogram? I’m upgrading my 1.6 diesel Doka to an ALH TDI. I get to do a 15degree swap because of the Doka raised bed area. I like your simple explanations.
There's a few guys on the Facebook page "TDI Swaps" that build them. If you join and inquire they'll reach out to you. I'm not sure if I should put his name or contact info on here 🤷
are you running the stock turbo
Yes, as of right now everything on the motor is stock
@@TinCupOutdoors The tiny stock turbo is probably the biggest problem. Can't breathe well enough; causes high temps. That, and a water to air is the way to go on these vans cause you can put the rad where it needs to be and the intercooler itself usually needs very little piping, so much less lag.
Nice work as always!! I love the DIY mindset. Is that fan triggered to come on at a certain temp or just always on?
Right now I've just got it wired on with ignition. Might look into a temp trigger down the road
I'm sorry but it's not gonna work. There's no airflow in that area the fan will help but you won't notice any cooler air gains. The only real way to go is a water to air cooler
Your probably right, I'll eventually get an intake air temp sensor to see what it's running. I think with the fan and a scoop under the van I should have good enough airflow for a stock alh 🙏

@@TinCupOutdoorsyes, the current project is a 3800 Supercharged Pontiac Fiero conversion, it's in the home-stretch. Then a 1985 Westfalia Vanagon will be completed. I'll be posting some videos later this year.

Thanks! I get about 30mpg down the highway at 65mph @3000 rpm. The previous owner did some regearing but I'm not exactly sure what ratios are in there

Yes it was regeared with a taller 3&4 for better cruising
Had two of these T25/T3/Vanagons. A 1.9TD AAZ Diesel, and a 1.9 DG Petrol. This series is making me miss them both. Had a lot of fun driving them around Wales. Great work machining all those parts yourself! Subbed.

Lots of Vanagon renovation videos on this site. Where are you people digging up all these old VW's? Pity VW doesn't make innovative/usuable/affordable vehicles like the Westphalia/Vanagons anymore instead of competing with the Japanese sedans/pocket rockets!
If you want to do a less expensive rear disc conversion, check out epytec. I used them for my conversion (video isn’t quite done yet), but I posted it in my build thread on the top of page 4. Google “Olis 1981 VW vanagon tdi Build” and go to page 4 for the links to the kit and to another samba thread of a guy who did it. Also feel free to reach out via email if you have questions. Looks good as always!

Wouldn’t it be great if the only item to make the swap was that $170 input shaft ? Redundant , I know , but this guy’s knowledge/ability is sooo beyond most that I’m far too hella intimidated within the first 30secs of the video … that I’d only attempt this if all of the troubleshooting and mods AND modified parts , etc. had already been done and were sitting in my shop. Lol , and maybe an 8-part paint-by-numbers step-by-step video series to hold my hand throughout . I’m impressed .

Unfortunately we don't know, everything was damaged beyond recognition. I assume it was started by some old fragile fuel fittings.
