Description from queenlive.ca: This is the legendary Houston show - legendary largely because its video was the one of the most sought-after documents of Queen for decades. Bits of footage have been seen in various documentaries dating back to 1987's "The Magic Years." The filming (pro-shot footage that was shown on the big video screens during the concert) was the result of an agreement with the venue not only for Queen, but plenty of artists who played at the Summit during this period. The footage of Aerosmith, The Eagles, and Kiss is well-known amongst collectors, and the footage of Kiss, The Who and Bruce Springsteen has been officially released. Springsteen surprised his fans in 2010 with 1978 footage that was released in a box set. Footage of Led Zeppelin is rumoured to exist as well. The performance is fantastic overall, although it's a bit of a rough night for Brian. After flubbing his solo in Somebody To Love and the transition from Death On Two Legs into Killer Queen, he breaks a string a minute into Liar. Roger has to improvise on his hi-hat for a short while until his guitarist gets a Red Special copy. They then play a spectacular version of the debut album gem, with an extended jam in the middle where everyone shines. Brian plays great from here onward. Freddie, after '39: "We'd like to try out something very different right now. This is from the new album, the News Of The World. Have you got it yet? The album, that is." He feels the need to distinguish the album from the British tabloid of the same name, but it actually wouldn't matter to an audience outside of the UK. "Ok, you might just about recognize this one. This is called My Melancholy Blues." Freddie makes a very rare reference to his recurring nodule problem which was an issue at many points in his career (but not during this great period for him). "It's a real bitch of a song. It really gets to the nodules, but we're gonna do it for you tonight. This is..." (he hesitates and chuckes to himself, probably because he's surprised at himself for even mentioning it) "a song entitled White Man." He offers a great version of the song, as his voice is in superb shape tonight. The high quality of the recording is apparent at the end of White Man, as Roger can be heard dropping his drum sticks with the knowledge that he has a 10-15 minute break ahead. The band skip the reprise of The Prophet's Song - the only time this is known to have happened on the entire tour - as Brian jumps right into Now I'm Here after his rather unique guitar solo (which starts with him fiddling with his EBow). Perhaps this was done because of time constraints (having a limited amount of film?). At the end of Now I'm Here, Roger breaks a drum stick during his brief drum break before the final fanfare. This show was also filmed by Bob Harris' Old Grey Whistle Test crew, along with plenty of other footage (on and off stage) from the tour, originally intended for a documentary for TV in spring 1978 that ultimately never aired. On January 14, 1978, short clips of the regular and fast versions of We Will Rock You from the beginning of the show (overdubbed with the studio version) were seen on German TV (ZDF Kultur Rockpop), possibly a combination of the in-house feed and the Bob Harris footage. In 1989, My Melancholy Blues from this show was released on the UK 12" "The Miracle" single, and on The Miracle CD single in the UK and Austria. Also in 1989, an edited version of the song was seen on the Rare Live video release. In November 2009, the band posted some concert videos from the 70s on their website in conjunction with the release of their "Absolute Greatest" compilation, including The Millionaire Waltz and a non-edited My Melancholy Blues from this show. The picture was brightened for the latter. In 2011, the complete and visually unaltered My Melancholy Blues was posted on iTunes. Some of the Bob Harris footage from Houston (including the soundcheck mislabelled as Atlanta) was first seen in the 2011 Queen documentary "Days Of Our Lives" that aired on BBC Two. Rhys Thomas, producer of that documentary, has confirmed that Houston was the only complete show filmed on the tour. He added that there are bits of Houston footage from other angles as well, often filmed from backstage, with no audio, and no complete songs. Thomas stated in 2012 that the Harris documentary and the Houston concert may be released as a package in the next couple years. Only the former has come to fruition thus far, in the form of the "American Dream" documentary in the News Of The World box set released in 2017 (also broadcast as a slightly different edit on the BBC as "Rock The World" in the same year). Much of the backstage footage in the documentary is from Houston as well, including footage of Mercury speaking about the show afterward - particularly about how he tripped and fell in his entrance for Now I'm Here, about Brian's broken string in Liar, and how audience enthusiasm is "up and down" on this tour, compared to the smaller venues of the previous tour. The Houston concert was intended for inclusion on the box set, and according to Queen archivist Greg Brooks either the band or their management vetoed it late in the process. An overdub in the second verse of We Are The Champions in the 2017 documentary clarifies that a 24-track master of this show does indeed exist in the Queen vaults (the drums sit differently in the mix as well) - see Chinwonder's video analysis for details. Footage of the stage setup was seen in the "American Dream" documentary on the News Of The World box set released in 2017 (as well as on the similar BBC documentary "Rock The World" the same year). Description from queenlive.ca: Bob Harris and his Old Grey Whistle Test crew came with the band on this tour with a pending documentary in mind. Hundreds of hours of footage were reportedly filmed on and off stage. Later this month Bob would state that he filmed the band in various cities (he initially cited Fort Worth and Houston, and later Las Vegas as well). Footage from Atlanta, Fort Worth, and Houston has since been seen and released, mostly in documentaries. In the winter 1977 Queen fan club magazine he said an hour-long Old Grey Whistle Test special should air in January 1978, but the project would ultimately be shelved, with a possible reason being the Old Grey Whistle Test producers wanted to focus on punk and new wave instead of an older band like Queen. Some backstage footage and interviews from the period were first seen in "The Champions" documentary aired on US TV in 1979. The black and white interviews of the band seen in the 1995 "Champions Of The World" documentary are from these reels of film as well. Freddie Mercury's interview alone is four hours of tape. Footage of the band arriving to the venue as well as them running Tie Your Mother Down at soundcheck (Actually Houston) was seen in the "American Dream" documentary on the News Of The World box set released in 2017. The latter was also shown at the "Stormtroopers in Stilettoes" exhibition in London in 2011. Bro... How did you find the pics in Chicago?
@@johne.boots6 I actually just found them on Discord in one of the fan groups. Lots of rare pictures get posted there.
Description from queenlive.ca: This is Queen's second of three visits to Chicago Stadium, for which the band were over an hour late as they got caught in a blizzard. Although Freddie is in great voice, he doesn't sing with as much ease as he would next week in Houston. After the fast We Will Rock You, Freddie says, "We're gonna have a rock 'n' roll party here tonight, and you're all invited!" After Somebody To Love, he asks, "Do you guys remember a kind of a medley the last time we were here?" They remember. "Okay, we have something similar tonight, but I think this time we've kind of sort of increased it in length, and I think it's slightly better... bet-ter... bet--tahhhh," as if he's trying to cover up that American accent he has picked up. In Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy, on "Think of me always," Freddie mistakenly plays an F chord (he's one bar ahead) instead of B flat minor. He quickly corrects himself. After the medley, he gets chatty. "It seems that every time we come to Chicago, we bring the snow with us. It's going to have to change. I don't know who brings it. It's either you or us lot. I think we'll have to come in the summer. Would you like that?" They definitely would, judging by their reaction. Queen then launch into a great version of Spread Your Wings, complete with the accelerated ending like the BBC version. Around this time period, Liar pushes about 10 minutes long. Every version is unique in some way, as the embellishments change from night to night. After tonight's performance Brian says, "It's fun to play around with those old ones now and again." He continues, "I don't actually like this round thing," referring to his 12-string acoustic. "This is a song which we had some requests for last time and we're gonna do it. We're gonna do it this time. This is from A Night At The Opera, and it's a very pretty song written by Freddie called Love Of My Life." Freddie adds, "It's just the two of us." The audience gives a great reaction after the song, prompting Brian to say, "It's kind of feeling like home these days. It feels very nice. Thank you." Brian is very focused tonight. He has a bit of fun at the beginning of his solo spot, creating some incredible airplane-like effects with his guitar and the delay. He then plays the opening riff of Tie Your Mother Down for twice as long before cueing the rhythm section in. @@philipterranova9334 Hehe, I hope we do get it soon. I heard the same thing about it being around somewhere. I’ll definitely re-upload if it ever comes out.
My first live gig and probably still the most memorable. I was 16 years old and a growing Queen fan. The sun shone all day and the crowd was great. It was a long wait for the main act but well worth it and I was right down at the front of a crowd that has since been estimated as exceeding 150,000. It was the first of ten times that I saw Queen live with Freddie, ending almost ten years later at their final gig at Knebworth. Those of us who saw them perform in those glory days were truly blessed !
Wow, that’s incredible. Seeing them not only at HP and Knebworth, two pivotal shows in their career, but eight other times in between too is incredible. You’re so lucky! Hope this brought back some fond memories for you.

Description from queenlive.ca: The second night was added in the second week of November, as the first night sold out very quickly. Freddie, after the first song: "Thank you and good evening everybody! Are you ready to rock and roll with Queen? Yes, it was a really good show last night. Thank you for giving us such a beautiful welcome. Thank you, New York. This is Brighton Rock." Before the medley, he takes a sip of champagne. "Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. While I take my medicine, we'd like to do something that we did last night." He then introduces the medley, and adds, "we hate calling it a medley, anyway. This is something a bit better than that." Freddie responds to an audience member after the medley. "What do you want? What's your request? Flick Of the Wrist? You got it." This definitely isn't the case. However, they do have a surprise in store for anyone who wasn't at the Garden last night. Intending to give a different show on the second night, Queen omit It's Late (which seems to be dropped until the last night of the tour at the L.A. Forum), Spread Your Wings, and My Melancholy Blues from the set (oddly dropping three new songs when trying to promote their latest album), but they do revive something they dropped from the setlist on the last US tour. He continues, "Okay, on with the show. We'd like to take you back to the very first album of ours, for all you fanatics. We'd like to do a couple numbers from that, and to start off with a song written by Brian May. This is called Doing All Right." The song is heard on stage seemingly for the last time. A stellar version of Liar follows, and Keep Yourself Alive is done later in the show, as always. But generally Queen's first two albums would feature less often in the show from now onward. Before White Man, Freddie says: "This next song is a real bitch to sing. It really requires a lot of my voice, but we're gonna do it anyway, because I have masochistic pleasure in doing it for you, my little darlings." During the Jailhouse Rock medley, they cover Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" much to the delight of the audience. "Thank you, god bless you; it was a pleasure doing business with you tonight," declares Freddie at the end of the show. Description from queenlive.ca: After the first song Freddie greets the audience: "Good evening, wonderful New York! How are you feeling tonight, you rock and rollers? Are you ready to rock with us?" He is then pummeled with roses from a few audience members after Somebody To Love, prompting him to exclaim, "It's like a carnival!" "There's our latest shirts over there." Brian gets distracted for a brief moment before Love Of My Life, just as Robert Plant was a couple years prior at the same venue between songs. He continues, "We're gonna take some time off and try something a little different. We haven't done this before for you. This requires a lot of peace and quiet, and a little bit of concentration." Someone in the audience picks this 'appropriate' time to set off a few firecrackers, as was not unusual at concerts the 70s. Freddie and Brian still haven't completely worked out the new arrangement of the song. During the intro, Brian has to change keys, and he remarks, "That's better," before Freddie begins to sing the lovely ballad. Freddie, before My Melancholy Blues: "Right, we have three songs in the sort of acoustic set. This is the third one, and I think I'd like to dedicate this to Ella Fitzgerald. She's here tonight." Brian May plays a bit of Deck The Halls in his solo spot, and soon afterward he breaks a string and struggles with his tuning with the whammy bar for a minute until Freddie comes on to transition back into The Prophet's Song. Brian then swaps guitars and carefully detunes the Birch copy to drop D as they continue the song as normally as they can. To buy some time Freddie holds out the mic to a few audience members in the front row who shout nonsense into it for a brief moment as his guitarist sorts out the problem in front of 20,000 others. Mercury comes on for the first encore of We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions in a New York Yankees jersey and cap, as the Yankees had just won the World Series in October. Deacon is seen with a Yankees cap as well. Description from queenlive.ca: Freddie sings a great version of Somebody To Love, reaching for many of the high notes, and hitting the vocal solo at the end of the song with complete conviction. He also delivers excellent versions of It's Late, My Melancholy Blues, and We Are The Champions. Tonight's medley (Death On Two Legs, Killer Queen, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy, I'm In Love With My Car, Get Down Make Love, The Millionaire Waltz, You're My Best Friend, Ogre Battle) is the longest Queen would ever play, lasting about 20 minutes. This is the last known performance of Ogre Battle - an abbreviated version with only the second verse merging into the end of the song. Brian has a bit of trouble navigating through the riffs near the end of the rock section of Bohemian Rhapsody, something which he has openly admitted about struggling with over the years. Freddie delivers a great version of We Are The Champions, and the encore of Jailhouse Rock is blistering. Description from queenlive.ca: This is a great early tour show. Brian May has a small hiccup in Brighton Rock, but otherwise plays with fluidity and poise. The only exception is where he plays the first note of his solo in The Millionaire Waltz in the wrong key, stops, regroups for a brief moment, and resumes. Some attendees saw this as one of those illusion-shattering moments of youth when they realized their heroes, these seemingly infallible musicians, were human after all (although on closer examination it sounds like Brian had to do a guitar change, as he bows out of the heavy section of the song prematurely, and it could've been a simple matter of needing an extra moment to regroup with the Birch copy in tow). Freddie, after the medley: "We'd like to do another new tune. We've got to do these, you see, because I mean we have quite a lot of albums out and we like to plug the new one. This is a song written by John Deacon and we'd like to do it right now. It's called Spread Your Wings." The song almost seems to end prematurely as they clearly thoroughly enjoy playing the ending at double tempo like the BBC version. Brian, after Liar: "We're going to do something a little unusual, for us at least, which is to play this little acoustic song for you. This is a song off A Night At The Opera which a lot of people would have liked us do last time I think and asked for it, and we finally figured out a way to do it and this is it. This is called Love Of My Life." His guitar part is a bit reticent early in the tour, but Mercury delivers the song with ease. Freddie, after My Melancholy Blues: "Every time I do this I try and put on my Ella Fitzgerald voice. One day it'll happen. Did you like it?" They absolutely do. "Okay, we'll keep it in the show. Right now we'd like to do something in total contrast, how about that? From black to white, or from white to black. It's sure what we feel. This is a song called White Man." After the show audience members en masse walked down Yonge Street singing We Will Rock You. Description from queenlive.ca: A fan recalls the night: "One of my main memories of this was how inhumanly loud they were and this is from a guy who sat front row for The Who and saw Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc. This night Queen were neck and neck with those bands as far as volume goes." Freddie Mercury is in excellent form for this early tour show, and Roger Taylor's fills throughout are full of life and spontaneity. "Thank you for giving us such a beautiful welcome. Oh, look at this smoke." Freddie gets momentarily distracted after the first song, probably noticing some pot smokers in the front rows. "We'd like to, straight away, do a song called Brighton Rock." Even though it's early in the tour, road fatigue is already setting in and Freddie seems to lose his bearings for a moment: "The other night, I mean the other time we were here... it feels as though we played here last night, I forgot. The second show's tomorrow. Sorry, folks. The other time we were here [referring to the show last January, now] we did a so-called medley for you. Do you remember that? Well, we'd like to sort of keep that in the set, but it's kind of grown a lot." The show then continues on as normal. Freddie, after the medley: "I hope you're ready for this. Now hear this. We're gonna do a John Deacon song. We ended up with You're My Best Friend, which is written by him. We'd like to carry on with a new song of his, which is on the News Of The World album, and we've only done it for like sort of a couple of days, so let's see what happens. This is called, let me see... [it seems he needs to refer to his setlist sitting on the piano, as it takes him a few seconds to continue] ... Spread Your Wings." Excellent versions of Spread Your Wings and Liar are played, and Love Of My Life is performed beautifully. Before Freddie and Brian had perfected the arrangement of the ballad, these early offerings of the song are timid and even vulnerable. Before the song Brian declares that the acoustic set is something "you perhaps don't normally associate us with." He adds, "this is a song we had a number of requests for last time, and we've just figured out how to play it. This is a very pretty song by Freddie." After a gorgeous rendition of My Melancholy Blues and a decently enthusiastic response from the audience, Freddie asks if they liked it. After a mixed response, he adds, "because if not, we'll throw it out of the show. It doesn't matter. We're just testing you tonight." He realizes he needs to turn it up a notch. "You've been very quiet tonight, you know. Are you usually as quiet as this?" This gets the audience going again, but after a blistering White Man, this was probably not the best time for Brian May to do a nearly ten minute guitar solo. About a dozen firecrackers are set off a minute into Keep Yourself Alive, not uncommon at concerts in the 70s. I hope that one day QPL will give us this wonderful concert, as I would love to see it and especially knowing their set list and that it is the longest concert of the band, at least they gave us this beautiful song.
Description from queenlive.ca: This is almost certainly the longest show Queen ever played, clocking in at nearly 2 1/2 hours. They play thirty songs in all, including eight from News Of The World. Sleeping On The Sidewalk is performed again tonight, and this performance of it was released as part of the 2017 News Of The World box set - or at least part of it, as there is a seamless cut just before the guitar solo and the tempo increases considerably, hence the non-specific "USA 1977" label. The banter before the song is certainly from this show. On this tour, Freddie is seen in a leather jacket for the first time, as he is slowly building a more masculine image. He also speaks to the audience with less of the sophistication and campiness, and more of the general rock star attitude. Roger Taylor spoke about their concert philosophy in a 2016 interview: "We always tried to inject a certain... it was more about excitement live. There were lots of overdubs on the records, lots of multi-track voices, and trying to exactly reproduce that is kind of an impossibility without cheating. So we kind of went for the excitement in the live interpretations. Danger was our business."
