Day 3 w/Boo: first arena ride & introduction to gun fire!
A continued look into training with "Boo". In this episode, I take him for his first arena ride and introduce gun fire (with half loads) for the first time.
"Boo" is a four year old gelding who came into training with some quirks like "bucking" when he "spooks" and being snorty/skittish of things. He was purchased a year ago by a lady who go him from a cutting horse training on the west coast but she is unsure of how much training he has had and he has been a handful. He is so afraid of spurs that he "reacts to the sound of them."
Will he make a mounted shooting horse???

    I have a question...you said no horse has been the exception but the exception to what exactly? That the side is the 'analytical' side? How do you determine if they are analytical?

    • @LMPHtraining
      @LMPHtraining День назад

      If a horse prefers to look at me from their left eye and tries to keep me on their left side then they are right brain dominant, which is most horses in the early stages of training as they are mostly in fight/flight/freeze in response to new stimulus. As I continue working with them, and spending more time in their left eye/left side, they will balance out. It makes them use the analytical side of their brain when you are on their left side/left eye. Over time, you should notice a calming effect. An analytical minded horse will either not have a preference to which eye/side they offer you OR they will offer you their right side/right eye more often.

    Bad ground manners lead into bad manners when being ridden. He is a bit green and used to being in charge. Will take determination to fix this, but he's certainly worth the time! He is easy on the eyes!!

    He is clearly confused as the direction he is supposed to go. One side always more difficult than the other. On this short of line he could brain you if he kicks…just my opinion

    In my experience it’s important to stay behind the drive line. If you get ahead of it, its confusing to them as to the direction…

    Nice to see someone else use a square pen to train, its what I use to work on them not getting stuck. I had a round pen for awhile but found it to easy for the horse to go forward, they almost didn't need to think. I hope you keep filming your progress with this guy. I also do more work from there right side and that's even when using them later for pasture, cattle or trail work.

    Horses who buck from the saddle are missing some steps in their education. Maybe going back a step, addressing his reaction to pressure on his barrel with something easier than a saddle would help him progress.

    • @tracyjohnson5023
      @tracyjohnson5023 12 дней назад

      I'm a big believer in using a lariat around barrel before a saddle. Leading from each foot helps a lot too with most horses. I bet this horse has been lunged after saddling to "get the buck or fresh out" so basically been taught to buck under saddle and this is just reinforcing it. I don't get the lunging thing though. I get moving their feet at a walk or even a few trot steps, but most things can be accomplished leading, circling, moving hind and front end over out of your space. I can watch this horse move his butt over and tell he's not ready to ride because he's not untracking

  • @slunt3123
    @slunt3123 13 дней назад

    I saw a horse who never understood what his job was, meaning what was he supposed to do, the entire time he was worked. Not knowing makes them anxious and erratic in their movements. I also never saw any cue applied to show him he got the right answer. When he finally stood from the flag, the pressure the horse felt from the flag being on him wasn’t removed, telling him, ‘yes’ standing still is the right answer. I do agree this horse isn’t broke. Giant holes in his education.

  • @johnjacobs4207
    @johnjacobs4207 14 дней назад

    your're doing more harm than good without a round corral. He who moves his feet first looses. Stand in the middle and put your flag on the ground. You're chasing him around by following him with your flag in the air. He's standing still like a regular quarter horse waiting to be milked. Put the saddle on and circle him again. Get a round corral and stand in the middle. Let him circle you instead of following him around. When he will circle well in the small round corral then take him out where there are no fences and circle him there. Finally when he will circle around you at the walk and stand still now you can put your foot in the stirrup.

    • @tracyjohnson5023
      @tracyjohnson5023 12 дней назад

      I have never had a round pen or an arena, just a field. IMO he could benefit more from ground work on a shorter lead at a walk. Can still move his feet and get point across of him moving out of my way. I'll do that before I ever ask for trot on end of the 15 foot lead. I never ask for lope on lunge line. Doesn't really serve a training purpose imo. All it ever does is teach a fresh horse to buck from what I've seen. Horse isn't getting relief from doing right thing like stand still for flag or relief for doing right thing moving as she's chasing him the whole time. Agreed don't move your feet out of their way. One of the most valuable things I ever learned was to make sure the horse will untrack behind before I ever get on. Pretty much every horse I've ever worked would rather have you in left eye instead of right or both.

    I've got 3 peptoboomsmals/doc bars. I've had peppy bred horses for 35 years and love them, but they have busy minds and can be late to mature mentally. Definitely do better with a full time job and have great work ethic. Theyre definitely give an inch take a mile horses in my experience. They're usually smart which is both good and bad 😂 I'm a woman and definitely see the I don't want my horse to hate me. I call it black stallion syndrome. My horse loves me he won't hurt me lol. My response is I want a horse like this to be more worried about me than anything else lol.

      @@LMPHtraininggirl I bet you actually had a high ankle sprain. I've sprained ankles a bunch over the years, better in a weak. Last one 4 years ago high ankle but I didn't know the difference. I'm still rehabbing it to get strength back. I used to make fun of pro ball players being wimpy when out for the season for a high ankle sprain. Now I know the difference and it involves tendons, ligaments, muscles and is usually torn.

Wherever I live, I work with honesty and hard work most people are happy and love with me I often try to ensure that no living being has any complaint against me. I hope you won't disappoint me Can you help us with this If yes then even, if no then. May God give you and your family lots of happiness and good health and more success Thanks so much indeed.
