Kawasaki KLR 250 Plastic Resortation with a Heat Gun
Short video on how to use a heat gun to restore plastic body parts on the KLR 250. This process can be used on all aged plastic body parts.

Im about to do this to an 84 xr500 i swooped up. However, i always sand the outer layer lightly first to get some of the chalky sun-baked crap off so that the color comes out better

Now spray it with one coat of clear laquar..

NOPE! Very bad idea, First do a 70/30 mix lndseed and thinner then gradually heat gun up to temp and it'll look amazing!
I've seen this same process performed, but they scrap off the flaking/faded plastic with a razor blade first.

I'll let you in on a secret , when you get the plastic shiny with the heat gun ,pour water over the whole area immediately before the plastic starts to turn dull. It will stay shiny!!

What I like about the heat gun is that you don't get microplastic waste like you do when you use 320 and 400 sanding paper and water... There should be an affordable chemical solution though to make it look as new because when you look at the plastic you see that it has been done by heat treatment in stead of polishing...especially when there is [relief] in the plastics... but when you want to get the job to be done fast and it doesn't matter if you want to sell the product or not you don't want to remove all the parts, you use the heat gun yes...

Good video. Color would have been consistent had you sanded the oxidized plastic off first. Then after the heat treatment you use a 2000 grit to get it smooth. Then use a buffing wheel to make it shine like new plastic.

he is saying the top layer of plastic is oxidized ( discolored). your not " oxidizing " anything.
He’s trying to retain as much plastic as possible as they are very thin to begin with, you don’t want all your plastic flapping around. Myself I would do a camp wrap on it

Valley Bmx Riders bad, never spray paint plastics, best thing to do is sand with 320 grit sand paper, then go 400, then 600, then 800, then 1500, and THEN buff it
Depends on the machine really. The condition and value of it to *you* is what matters. Painting plastic is never ideal but if you're just looking to spiff up something you're gonna beat the hell out of soon after - Go for it. You certainly *can* make plastic looks good with a rattle can job but you really need to do the prep work (like with anything else). Also, depending on if you have a Sport Quad or a Utility - It can be a different scenario. Sport Quads normally have flimsy ABS fenders whereas most any proper Utility ATV has "High Impact ABS" plastic. You can make the flimsy stuff look great but keep in mind all the flexing likely isn't going to do your nice new paintjob any favors after a few rides. TLDR; Yes/No.

you heated the plastic too hot, use a heat gun from a far distance and it won't burn the plastic. best thing you can do would be to sand the plastic, or get new
My plastic was very scratched so i decided to sand it. I finished with 2.5k sand papper. Now plastic is very smooth, but there is no shine, i mean no reflection at all (white matte colour). So my question is how to make it to shine like a new? Do i need a heatgun and after polish? Some instructions please :)
Use the heat gun (but don't melt it) or you can shine it and buff

Sanding is way better, start with a soft grit sand paper and work your way till you get as smooth as possible then get a buffing wheel and you can make any motorcycle or atv plastic look like brand new, it doesn't look that good with a heat gun

What grit? Real fine? I see a video starting with 320 400 800 and 2000 and then buffing it. Jesus that's too much work. What's your method?
Get a sanding machine if you don't want to spend. To much time doing it but yea it's better to sand them and then buff them out, the plastics end up looking brand new. It would take like 4 hours to sand and buff a gas tank by had. but then end result is well worth it makes it look brand new .
I already did it and it was ok. But it didn't clean them up like I thought they would clean up. Still looked a bit faded and wore out. Still sold the four-wheeler though. That was one complaint he had, so I told him HE could go buy plastics for it. Not me, too expensive.
You can also clear coat them after sanding and polishing you gotta really take your time tho if you don't it won't come out as good

Honda knew that plastics fade, So they solved the problem on the Honda C90 cub by using white Polypropylene (PP) It`s obviously white so there`s no colour to fade too and scratches would be fairly unnoticeable as they would be white also, But I guess not everybody wants a motorcycle being white
