Stuff like this ties us to the past. Often it is hard to imagine how it was like for our ancestors, how it was like to be them in what seems to be such a different age. This is a rare moment where we can end a chapter of history, honoring those who came before us, and understanding more of ourselves both with context and without. I'd like to think this funerial was more about this than anything else. Conflict divides us, and the resolution of conflict unites us. To see men from a different age get a proper burial gives me comfort.

About twenty years ago, I sat on the steps you were facing on that gazebo and just looked at the water in the lake. It saddens me that the lake is dry now. I'm glad I got to see it while it was full.

The white gazebo was the boat dock. To the right of that dirt patch in the distance is where my ex-wife almost drowned us by capsizing our canoe.

So I take it the water has never returned. That is kind of sad. My Ex and I had our honeymoon here. We visited several times. I played a game of lawn chess here with my now deceased father. My Ex and I capsized our canoe in this lake. Never canoe with a partner who has no idea how to handle a canoe.
