    How nice to work with your mom. I agree your mom’s work is beautiful. I have been a member of @Textures craftworks in Hamilton Ontario for 8 years now and my prime product is coiled bowls and hot-pads and I love the process.

      Just a standard needle. Schmetz 10 or 12 or 14 works great.

    Would folded fabric work? Then you wind it so that the edge is always covered, so there will not be any frayed edges.

    • @KaLinnDishion
      @KaLinnDishion 3 месяца назад

      We've found folding just wasn't work that extra time and effort. The fraying is minimal and actually doesn't detract from the final product at all. And if there are quite a few stray strings, it is easy to snip them right off. We even tried a sweater fuzz shaver! It worked great to nip off the little bits of thread, although we don't think the small amount of threads is a problem compared to the amount of time to fold and press. Also doubled fabric would wind very differently. Definitely a matter of personal preference 🙂

    I’m sorry but I’ve never heard of rope sewing. What is it

    • @KaLinnDishion
      @KaLinnDishion 4 месяца назад

      Using cotton clothesline rope, you wrap it with strips of fabric to achieve what look and color you want, and you stitch the rope together with a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. The video will explain better. You can make coasters, trivets, bowls, purses, etc. depending on how you sew the rope together. Some people use synthetic rope if the product won't be used for something hot like a coaster or trivet would. It is a very addictive hobby 😉

    Does the glue get the stripe hard?

    • @sibling3356
      @sibling3356 3 месяца назад

      No, The glue does not make it noticeable hard or difficult to stitch. When completed, you would never know where there was glue placed.

    • @KaLinnDishion
      @KaLinnDishion 3 месяца назад

      This glue stays fairly soft and we generally sew shortly after gluing. You don't have to wait for the glue to dry, just don't tug real hard as you are wrapping at the fabric join and secure with a clip as you wrap the joined seam.

    • @annettebrandt9603
      @annettebrandt9603 3 месяца назад

      I was just doing some and when I went to stitch the needle did not go in. I was using the same glue that your mom was using. If it gets hard should I change the glue or do something else with it?

    • @annettebrandt9603
      @annettebrandt9603 3 месяца назад

      And where do you purchase your rope. What size do you buy.

    • @KaLinnDishion
      @KaLinnDishion 3 месяца назад

      @@annettebrandt9603 I know that she doesn't glue too far ahead - just what she will be sewing that day or the glue can get hard. Also, don't use too much glue. Just enough that you can see the purple and it is tacky. You won't tug real hard and secure with a clip as soon as you are past the glued pieces. Then sew within the hour or so otherwise it can get hard. If it does get hard (overnight) you ca sometimes roll that section between your fingers and sort of loosen it up enough to sew right through it. And finally, if you have a "burr" on your needle, it won't like going through the fabric, rope and glue. Easiest way to tell (and it seems weird but mom said it is the best way) take the needle out of the machine and lightly draw it across your lip 💋 I know, weird! But your lips will feel a burr long before your finger will. It doesn't take much to create a reluctant needle. Hope that helps. Just don't let the glue dry completely before you sew.

    Question .. for the large trivet, your pieces are cut in 1” strips. But how long are each and how many strips are needed for a large trivet?

    • @KaLinnDishion
      @KaLinnDishion 4 месяца назад

      Hi - I am the oldest sibling! The strips are the "width of fabric" so when we buy a yard of fabric, we cut 1" strips across (cut off selvages first). So approximately 44" long (depending on how wide the fabric is). We put 42 strips in our 12x20 trivet kits which is more than enough. You can easily wrap about 27" of rope with a 44" strip. The 12x20 trivet takes about 80 feet of rope = 960" divided by 27" = 36 strips. Whew. Who knew sewing involved SO much math!

      This is great help.

    • @KaLinnDishion
      @KaLinnDishion 3 месяца назад

      The 1" strips are cut the width of fabric. So if we buy 1/4 yard we can cut 9 strips that are 1" wide and as long as the fabric was wide, usually 36" or 45". We include 40 strips in our 12"x20" kit (approx. 43" long after cutting off the selvage edges) which is WAY more than needed for this size of trivet.
