Chronicles of Joth, Black Fish Bay Session #51 "Dead In The Water"
Solid session fellas.
This is not a complaint at all but I am curious about why the change up in adventures? I am happy to see more Dragonslayer and you guys diving into Greyhawk.
no shade on Moldvay-- but I think I prefer BECMI
Great recap!
Thanks. Remembering as I recap. Lol
Why not just use Conan?
If you are referring to 2d20 Conan system? My answer is the BoL system is a fantastic alternative for high adventure swords & sorcery. If you refer to the IP? BoL doesn't have the rights to the IP and it's setting is great.
Great recap and great to see you guys post another session. I am just starting to use Barrowmaze but I do like how there are other adventure hooks written into the adventure. I think dropping those can help break up the slog a megadungeon might create. I have used the rumor table in both the sessions I have ran. One rumor regarding some tomb robbers has come up twice and this has a generated interest with the PCs. I will flesh that out a bit to give them a good side quest.
Outstanding. Are you using C&C for your Barrowmaze sessions?
@@JasonFlashFootball No, I am using Dragonslayer. I thought it fitting for the adventure as written to give DS a try. So far I am enjoying it.
Cool recap, Barrow Maze sounds like a fun one. Listening in on your sessions I have considered trading in OSE for Dragon Slayer
Oh? OSE is an amazing product too. DS is a customized OSR and OSE is a strict adherence to Moldvy D&D. So, if you enjoy Moldvay (remastered) and those rules and procedures, I would stick with OSE because DS changes many things, in that regard. Both are amazing and well worth your time. I appreciate you listening and sharing.
I second that. Ose is excellent. Give some thoughts before abandoning it. And who says you can't enjoy both? Thanks for participating.
I started running sessions in Barrowmaze using Dragonslayer. I am enjoying both the adventure and the system. I don't know if DS will ever replace Castles & Crusades for my "D&D" gaming, but I think it's a solid system.
@@Decado1628 C&C is an amazing game! I have only enjoyed a few sessions with my locals but, as I have said publicly, it is what D&D should have been.
@@JasonFlashFootball 100% agree. I remember when it released but because it wasn't "D&D" I did not give it a look. I regret that. Our campaign has been going for two years and we are 41 sessions into it. Even my most resistant 5e players are now fully on board with C&C.
I know this is 3-years old, but this video was actually so much more informative than the usual crazy-camera, hyper dialog stuff that seems to dominate the RUclipss. Thanks!
Thank you. We should have made a few more BT vids.
@@roleplaycafe6645 not too late 😀
I would like to invite you to my Discord server, where I talk about my design, but I don't see a way to contact you in private.
I have been working part of the day and all evening on a Swords and Sorcery style magic system for MvB. Sorcery is powerful but ultimately corrupting. Freeform magic that only leads down a dark path of power and despair. I still need to type it up but I'd like to share it with you if you are interested!
Awesome! When it is done upload it to DTRPG as a product support or I can upload it to our page on DTRP or put it on my Google Drive as well. Brother, that is awesome as heck. Please share it when you finish it.
Will do, thank you!
@@roleplaycafe6645 I haven't gotten sorcery done yet, but I did create a character sheet. How can I share this to you?
Druvethru is indeed updated, just got the 1.1a file. Thanks!
Bought the no art version and just created two characters! Loving this so far!
Thank you. I updated the free file yesterday afternoon, but it might not have changed. Does your copy have the Creature Missile To Hit # with damage (#) updated? I will try to update it again today if it hasn't worked.
@@JasonFlashFootballno I must have gotten it before the update (I got it in the morning I think), I'll go get the new one, thanks!
The latest edition is updated with typos fixed as of Sept 8th, 2024, at noon EST.
Nice! Were you guys able to utilize Affinity for this?
No. I am not proficient enough to use Affinity at all. This is a simple 27-page paperback at Lulu only. We will use Affinity and hopefully retain your services for our next big project, Space Age of Man, and publish that at both DriveThru and Lulu as we did DAoM.
@@JasonFlashFootballlt's far easier than it looks. Just start with two pages, use Lorum Ipsom to fill with text and toy arround with the formatting panels.
We held off for a while before starting. You didn't miss any gameplay. It's interesting how character personalities face the dice to unfold their fate. I've conceived of character the dice did not favor so their stories were short lived. Others I never expected would end up riding high.
Play to find out, baby.
I wish lots of D&D adventures had been released in the form of the introductory solo adventure for the 1983 Mentzer Basic Set.
I miss Harold. R.I.P.
I grew up on Basic/Expert D&D and AD&D. Over the years migrated to newer editions. Two years ago I left those behind as a GM and returned to old school style play. I started running Castles & Crusades campaign and it has been going great. I backed the Dragonslayer KS because the art sucked me in. I didnt think I would ever actually GM it until I found this stream and other Barrowmaze streams. I started reading the adventure and ultimately ran my first session of Barrowmaze last week using Dragonslayer. I love the call back to old school dungeon crawling that Dragonslayer and Barrowmaze have. Exploration, dungeon crawling, traps, and yes hirelings! They are things that are missing from the current version of the game. I look forward to playing more Dragonslayer and exploring Barrowmaze with my players. Thanks for the inspiration!
Let's make it happen ~
Yes sir. Sounds good. Be glad to join in anything from a one shot to more regular play. Provided coordinating isn't too problematic.
You made it!
Great reflections and I agree. Good stuff.
lol David's reactions to my descriptions always crack me up ruclips.net/video/P0OxRYwEzqs/видео.html
Fun session!
Great recap and thanks to you three for breathing life into the session.
LL was my very first OSR and it was the game that brought me back to tabletop roleplaying after 18 years away. I owe it all to Tim and his YT review from a long time ago.
old school is the best
Good points. A little realistic thinking goes a long way.
I listen to you guys game sessions when on bed, you guys help me sleep 😅
Lol
Mazes and monsters is a far out game!
i know what you mean. I have also been the DM/GM for much of my time doing RPGs. and yet, as part of a campaign I've participated in since COVID Lockdown, my own Character has just reached Level 5. I wasn't mentally prepared for the transition (the previous 2 campaign characters were killed early on in their careers) - to me The realisation that I am Level 5 has suddenly opened a new world of possibilities....
Great idea. I can see it working in many if not all situations.
I just started with Moldvay, it's cool but quite cumbersome as a newbie.😅 Love it though
Hey Jason, great in depth look at dragonslayer! Quick question, what do u think about dragonbane from free league pub?
They have another map of the whole world. You only have 10% of what they have in the bigger one
Hi, i've found this community and I really can't figure out what it's all about. Where can i learn more about what "RPG a Day" is and what is "The Brigade" i keep hearing about. Loved your talk on the 5e DMG, after going to the old-school style i started reading the 5e DMG and found out it's actually very good aswel.
"Dream the Dream". Well put.
I always like to have a bunch of n.p,c,'s off to the side.
That was almost my response lol. Great minds.
Its feels good to get a few levels in OSR games, but don't get too cocky. Thank you for sharing
Hah! So true.
You lads did good work with DAoM, for sure!
Thank you Anthony. Appreciate that.
I've purchased two solitare baggie games before and both were disappointing
My copy had a different dragon on the cover, at least I think it did. So long ago.
I bought Gamma world in 78 or 79, and my next purchase was the Basic D&D box set, which I 'think' the box was red, but I don't remember the book being red. The next purchase I believe was the World of Greyhawk, 80' release. I spent the whole summer recreating the Greyhawk map onto a wall in my bedroom, with my mom's permission and occasional help.
@@yourseatatthetablethat would have had the old Erol Otus cover art - this one is Larry Elmore's. I prefer Otus, it has a more psychedelic fantasy vibe to it.
