Horror Game Character Speedpaint || Matilda the Midwife
Hello again! I'm back with another video about my medieval plague horror game.
After the unexpected response to my last video, I wanted to get another one out reasonably quickly. I really can't explain how great it was to see so many people excited about my weird little project, so thank you!
This is my first speedpaint video for the character portraits that are shown during dialogue in the game. I wanted something that could show more emotion and personality than basic 3D models - so here we are.
As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts! If you have any feedback, ideas, or anything else, drop a comment!

Dream Big, Fail Big || Making a Game About a Medieval Plague
Просмотров 903День назад
Hi! I'm doing the dumb thing and making a huge game as my first indie project. Luckily, I have some skills and stubbornness to help me get there. I'm six months into development, and have a solid base for my game, though there's still a loooooong way to go. If you love games about medieval plagues, eldritch horrors, and complex narratives, you're in the right place! Subscribe to follow my journ...

    so, you've just revealed that you've been going to use Unity which is absolutely fine, but I'd like to share my point here. apparently, you're indie, even solo dev. if we omit the solo part, it's possible, that someone may join you along the way. for the both, solo or indie, an engine comes to my mind first, which is not unity. we all know that many people ditched unity to godot (and unreal) after their f-uped policy + a lot of newcomers tend to come there for the same reason. so, what we have is that mostly teams with unfinished projects or big companies still stick to unity not to change their pipeline. to conclude, godot just seems more community oriented in some terms if you don't have your reasons that would overweight those. what'd you say?

    • @ThePlagueDev
      @ThePlagueDev 2 дня назад

      Hi again! I agree Unity is not ideal. I kept up with the Unity drama pretty closely, I was in uni for game art at the time so it was all anyone talked about for a bit lol. I did seriously consider making this project in a different engine, but ultimately decided to stick with Unity for a few reasons: a) I've been working in Unity for about 3 years now. I know it well, including it's quirks and how to make the most of it's systems. I feel comfortable in it, which maybe isn't the best reason, but it was a major factor in the decision. b) They walked back their policy, which I understand a lot of people take with a grain of sand considering they've proven they can't be trusted in future. However, for now, things are OK, and after the backlash I think it's unlikely that they'll try that again anytime soon. c) I mention in my first video that I deal with chronic illness. I'm constantly budgeting my energy and already working with a reduced capacity for learning because my brain is always full of fog and goo. Learning a whole new engine would take... a while, and new things don't tend to stick in my brain well. Again, maybe it's a poor choice, but the idea of learning an entire new engine at this point was... a lot. If I was a completely fresh dev with no existing experience in an engine, I'd 100% agree something else would be a better choice, but in my case it would mean many months of pain before I could actually start making what I want. Ultimately, I may come to regret the decision, but I didn't make it lightly. I really appreciate your advice, though, and will keep it in mind.

  • @darikzen
    @darikzen 2 дня назад

    that's impressive!! but, especially considering that you struggle with code, maybe art is not where you should start making your game? usually we change some of our art and even decide on complete different art direction in game based on gameplay mechanics, limitations and realizing project scale. I heard of many people ending up making lots of "assets" for the game that was never developed. don't want to be mean, just nudging you since you stated such an ambitious plan in your previous video

    • @ThePlagueDev
      @ThePlagueDev 2 дня назад

      Hi! Thanks for the advice - I really appreciate it. I completely agree you should not start a game project with detailed art like this. I talk more in depth in my first video, but I'm about 6 months into this project at this point. Because code is not my strong point I aimed to set down a decent code base and greybox setup before starting any serious art. Most systems are in place in at least a simple form, though I'm still tying them together. This kind of painted art takes a while to do, so I'm expecting to be working on it throughout the rest of development, most likely. Thus, I figured its worth starting a little earlier than I would with other finalized art assets. It's not too hard to paint over and change later if I decide on a different style or direction. That said, it may well be a poor choice. I definitely considered trying to get the game fully functional before touching anything art-related, but honestly I just don't have the stamina for coding a lot of days, so this lets me still make progress when I'm too tired for programming. Thanks again!

    Hi! Thanks again for all the love. I have a few questions: 1) Would anyone be interested in game art / dev livestreams of me losing my mind in real time? They'd probably be pretty chill since a lot of this stuff is slow and long. 2) I'd love to do some more in-depth tutorials about different parts of game art. Are there any you'd be especially interested in seeing? 3) A few people have asked about a more reliable way to be notified about updates and new videos. If I made a Discord server, would anyone be interested in joining? That's all for now, thanks! In future, I'll probably be aiming for a video every 2-4 weeks, but it will really depend on the games progress and how much time I have outside my day job and my other day job (being asleep). Love you all <3

      1) Yes, would love that 2) Don't really care, if i'm ever going to make art for a game it's probs gonna be pixel or voxel (3d pixel) art, so realistic art wouldn't really help me, but i'm sure other would like it 3) I would like that Also, if you see this comment masterironhero9432, i believe you can make a video release at a certain point in time but still comment on it before it's posted if you have the link to the video (might be wrong though, as i'm not a content creator myself)
