    Have you ever tried dabbing on the SoectraFix with a synthetic squirrel-hair mop brush? I haven’t, I’ll say … but I’m thinking about it: I find that even having transferred the SpectraFix into a better spray bottle, applying it this way still moves the pastels around, and the fixative can still concentrate more in some areas than in others, and *inevitably* I wind up with a few clearly-visible tiny little droplets which dry kinda dark, and which discolor the artwork somewhat. I’m hoping dabbing the SpectraFix on with a mop brush (with an eye towards animal welfare, I highly recommend the Princeton Neptune series of brushes made from synthetic squirrels, who live in an advanced outer space utopia and who donate their tiny synthetic squirrel-hairs willingly, plucked from their tiny little squirrel hair-brushes) will produce perfectly even layers of SpectraFix with zero droplets and zero pastel displacement. But I haven’t actually tried it yet, so like a big coward I’m hoping to find someone who has, and who can tell me whether that works. Gah! All that aside, love the giraffe, and thank you for having uploaded! :-)

      @@danopticon thank you. No I haven’t tried using a brush to apply it. I feel like the hairs on the brush would push the pastel ever so slightly but I could be wrong. I haven’t had any problems really using the method in the video to fix my drawings. I do a couple light layers and I think light is key. If you see puddles you used too much. This is also a workable fixative so you could try blending any droplet spots out with a finger or applying the smallest amount of color back to hide it. If you do try with a brush I would layer some pastel on a separate piece of paper using the same pastels and paper and it test it that way so you don’t ruin your art if it doesn’t turn out well. Hope this helps. Ps I’d like to meet those squirrels 😄

    I'm sorry, this has to be BS. I've got this product, I've shaken the can, I've put on SEVEN light coats, and the pastel is still coming up on my finger and smearing when rubbed. Are you being paid by Sennelier? Are you deleting comments with negative reactions? I'm very frustrated, as you can tell.

      @NaomiCoutureArt Месяц назад

      @@yourpaladam449 This is not a paid review. I bought this product and made a video about it…no bs. However it does depend how much oil pastel you have on the paper. I have only used a few light layers but if it’s really thick it will take longer to dry. If it’s super thick it might not dry down completely with the spray. I’ve only tried oil pastels on one paper so I’m not sure if different papers could change how the pastel dries.

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt Месяц назад

      No I haven't tried that before. I have heard others say they use hairspray. As far as I know it is not archival and could cause your artwork to yellow over time. If that doesn't matter to you I would still try it on a piece you don't care as much about just in case it ruins it.

    Hi, Naomi. I bought a product before seeking help on the internet and seeing your video. I live in a place with few retail options for art supplies and bought a Faber-Castell soft, moist pair of erasers which was packaged as 1 red and 1 blue. I am working on coloured pencil laid down 1-2 years ago and it does a terrible job. Is OLD coloured work particularly difficult to remove?

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt 3 месяца назад

      @@billyleonard1722 I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to remove but some things to consider: has it been in a warm location that gets a good amount of sun or heat. That can make the colored pencil stick more. Did you use a spray over it, workable or final. What paper are you using. Colored pencil erases easier on more hardy thick papers like a hot pressed watercolor paper. Also did you use any other mediums or blending techniques like using odorless mineral spirits which sinks the pencil deeper into the paper. If you need an area to be white or change color without ruining the paper look up brush and pencil touch up texture and titanium white. I have a video using it. It creates an opaque white. It’s archival over colored pencil and once it’s dry you can actually go over it with colored pencil and change the color. Hope that helps you ☺️

I'll try it one more time and then try Blu-Tac and if no luck, I'll put the idea of a return to white behind me! Compared to vivisection and animal slaughter, it's somehow just not important enough. :)

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt 6 месяцев назад

      These are pastel pencils not wax or oil based. Honestly they feel pretty close, the stabilo probably blends a bit easier as they are softer. If you looking to cover a large area you would go through a lot of your pencil. If you using pastels I would look into pan pastels or pastel sticks for a base layer and then use the pastel pencil for details on top. If you’re looking for colored pencils I like derwent lightfast or prismacolor for large areas and polychromos for details. I have a few videos using both colored pencils and pastels if you want to see how each work. I hope this helps.

      Yes it is! I still like my Daniel Smith watercolors and keep a few colors on my current palette. Honestly I like all the brands I have, but I do find I reach for my W&N ones more often.

    Currently ranked the best watercolour paint in the world…Sennelier started out making paint for Cezanne, Degas etc. Picasso used it as did Hockney. Van Gogh was known to have used it also and is not cheap paint. I was in one of the Sennelier shops in Paris last week and it is always an adventure.

    I wonder if the Holbein Meltz smell at all? I wanted to buy it, but I only work at a small space, and I wonder if it's at least safer and doesn't smell.

      It doesn’t smell but I don’t know if its any safer then Gamsol. As far as I know gamsol is the safest artist made odorless mineral spirits that I know of. Also I still prefer using my gamsol over the meltz. I hope this helps.

    Not sure it was a fair test as you did not use as much Gamsol.

      You may be right but I used the same amount I alway do to blend. However I think I still prefer gamsol and still use that one.

    This might be a dumb question, but do you think I could make my own liquid white by mixing the brush and pencil products together into an empty dropper bottle with a mixing ball? I love the brush and pencil stuff but sometimes it’s kind of a pain to have to mix them together when I want to use it. And I’m not all too impressed with the product in the bottle you demonstrated to use that instead. I figure if I can mix them together in my own bottle it will keep it from drying out and will make it a lot more convenient to use. What do you think?

      @NaomiCoutureArt 8 месяцев назад

      I still use the brush and pencil products. I have not tried pre mixing it in another bottle. It does dry out when mixed so I’m not sure how well it would last. If you want to try it just mix a small amount at first so you don’t end up wasting as much of it does dry out. Please let me know how it goes if you do try it because that would be a more convenient way to use it.

      @@NaomiCoutureArt I think I’ll give it a try in a small one like you said and I’ll let you know what happens :) If it dries out it’s not a huge deal. It might be worth the experimentation lol

    I recognize that you reviewed the Derwent WSG pencils with wood, not the woodless ones, so these comments may not be totally relevant. I have the Derwent woodless water soluble graphite pencils set of 3 which I don't use for a number of reasons. There is little variation between the light, medium and dark pencils. The pencils don't sharpen to an exact point, so I can only get thick lines from them, not the fine lines I prefer for my style of detailed work. I find it extremely difficult to control the shape of the drawing once water is applied because the graphite bleeds beyond the area it's applied to. It dries quickly and when dry, it can no longer be moved around. You cannot lift it and you cannot erase it, therefore, the only way to correct a drawing is to keep applying more and more graphite, hoping you can get it to work. It usually doesn't. Additionally, I keep breaking the pencils when I apply a slight bit of pressure, so I now have a bunch of small hard to use pencil pieces. This is one of those are supply purchases I regret. On the other hand, I totally love the FC WSG pencils. I usually work on Bristol paper. I have much more control over the line quality because these pencils can be sharpened to an exact point. The graphite applies in a predictable way with clear definition between the various hardnesses. They react with water in a consistent and controllable way. Because FC WSG is not permanent when dry, it's easy to move the graphite around to achieve the exact shade desired, or you can lift it if you find you applied too much. Although not completely erasable after water has been applied, you can lighten areas with a standard eraser. I don't have issues with FC WSG bleeding beyond the edges of my drawing. Additionally, I really love combining them with watercolor and colored pencils to add a bit of subtle color to my drawings. The only drawback I find is that because these can be reactivated, they do interact with watercolor and cause the wc to gray out a bit. In my opinion there's no comparison. FC makes the best product - hands down.
