My Grandson was desperate to see some Lizards but after a couple of disappointing expeditions on the main island I searched t'internet and discovered that on a small island (Sa Dragonera) there was a population of the endemic (i.e. not found elsewhere in the world) Lilford's Wall Lizard.
Ferrry tickets were bought and we spent a joyous couple of hours surrounded by the Lizards. With a bonus of close views of Eleonora's Falcon too.
My Grandson was so pleased he says it was his favourite day of the holiday.

In the 1960s, the population of this species stood at around 2000. Whilst its numbers have increased since then, it remains relatively rare at 10,000. Both an adult and juvenile feature in the video. One of Europe's rarest breeding birds. A project to reintroduce the species was started in 2004 when birds were translocated from Donana NP to S'Albufera. Larger than the Eurasian Coot, you can see the red crest which gives them their name. A Bull called Dave runs amok in the campsite.

A Bull and calf escaped from the adjacent farm and ran around the campsite. The farmer was summoned and with a shake of s food bucket and several shouts of "Come on Dave", the cattle were encouraged back through the hedge (although it took about 10 minutes for them to take the patch). When I showed a friend the video, he said it was a pity the Bull wasn't called 'Fenton'. I wish I'd thought of ...

Granddad duties today and I treated my Grandson to a boat trip - his face when he saw his first Dolphin is already a treasured memory. An early start this morning to try for closer views of the Purple Heron on Exminster Marshes. Initially, I couldn't find it and walked in completely the wrong direction. I was told this was a Southern Migrant Hawker and that this one was the first one found in Monmouthshire. I didn't find and am very much a beginner when it comes to Dragonflies. Seen at Goldcliff Lagoons sea wall (part of the Newport Wetlands NNR. A number of Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) pass through the Exe Estuary each autumn and this one has been around for a few days now, It wandered near the young Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) at one point before ending up amongst the Common Redshank (Tringa totanus).
