I don't care what anyone says. If you are laying down boot tracks in public land and you see quail on the ground, drill them. That is our motto. We are out there on public land with no dog in SoCal, we are hunting these things to put good meat on our plates. I drive about 70 miles to hunt quail. If they are in range and on the ground, they are getting 7/8oz of 6's.

Darn right quail hunting is unpredictable. I went quail hunting in Kern county with my buddy who at the time was still a game warden. So on this one outing, we went up a canyon looking for quail. It turned into a Chukar (only) hunt, where we each got our limit in 20 minutes and didn’t even have to “work” for them that time out. Since then and even before then, I’ve always had to work hard for chukar.

What happened to the pointer? Good ol' American fun. Way to go.

Well done, I just love watching those dogs work absolutely beautiful pair. And I’ll tell you what every once in a while it’s really nice to get some crunch under the soles of your boot just by yourself, and just to reflect on years past and years to come.

Where is this field?

Everywhere I've ever had to hike in to fish, the fishing has been great. The fish get so little fishing pressure that they'll hit almost anything.

Another year or two and you're in business. Nice looking dog. I'm taking my 13 month old female out Saturday. I had her to a game farm 2 weeks ago and she did great. I play alot of frisbee fetch with her and it has actually paid off. She brought every bird back withe enthusiasm. She found a mildly wounded bird and brought it back to me while being beat by the wings and spurred all the way. My buddy tried to call her to him, but she ignored him and gave the bird to me. Very rewarding. I guess you can train dogs in soccer field as well as the field.

That first pheasant was like, "Are you bringing me back to the pen?"

thanks for sharing! i love fishing the high country lakes of the Sierras. that method was introduced to me years ago in Burney Falls by an old timer who had slayed them at Baum and Crystal Lakes. since that time i've used this method on every backpacking trip. awesome. thanks again!
