How to Repair Rocker Panel Rust (Mazda Miata Mx-5)
UPDATE: So 4+ years later this quick repair appears exactly the same. The car has seen plenty of miles, salt, and track time with no ill effects. Obviously, if you have a nice/valuable car go get it professionally repaired but I've been busy enjoying this crappy Miata!
Let's fix my beater Miata. Keep in mind this car cost $1000, so no this isn't a professional repair. However, this video should guide you through the basic process of repairing rusty rocker panels (or sills) on a NA Mazda Miata (Mx-5) or similar vehicles.

Supposed to use fiberglass filler first before bodyfiller
great video and very clear..although those are lap welds not butt welds...good job !
please drop the musik.. thanks !!
If your not an instructor, you should be. One of the best how to vids I've seen. Thanks for posting
How do you shape the patch panels correctly? That’s the part I’m most worried about.
Perfect repair, this is the right repair 👍
Thanks
Thank you for this. I was halfway through this job and started to get discouraged on finishing it up, but this video showed me exactly the steps I needed to take. Thanks a million
Dankeschön für das interessante Video
Thats a mazda saved again from scrap 🔧
What top coat is that for brilliant black? Unsure of what to use. I’m already using SEM satin as a first layer but I’m pretty sure I need to add that gloss after.
Good job. The rocker panel is on the bottom of the car body. Whenever a car gets wet the water runs off at the bottom of any car or truck. Chances are that all cars or trucks with metal on the bottom of the vehicle is eventually going to rust sooner or later. Your technique is a really good one. It saves a lot of time as well. I think that replacing the entire rocker panel usually is not necessary because rust usually shows up in the same place most of the time. Your technique repairs only the part of the rocker panel that actually does rust.
Great video super helpful ❤️
That's not a permanent repair
How much is the cost off a job like this in a traditional body shop?
why not remove all bad metal ? nows the time to do it when its opened up
good job, good video..... but what about the drain holes? that is why they rust in the first place.
Hi! Thanks for a great video! Hopefully you are still available since it was posted some time ago but I have a question. I only need to paint the black rocker panels. They are in pretty good condition but definitely need a painting to freshen them up. What is the correct paint, brand, finish etc to match the OEM? I don't need any repairs or primer, just a thin layer or two to bring it back to New. Thanks again for your help here!
Do I have to use a paint removal wheel, or can I just skip to the flap wheel part?7:37 I've never used a flap disk, reminds me I oughtta wear gloves as someone who has zero skill or experience in using one.
How do you seal the inside where the welds are
Why did you leave all that rusted metal underneath? If it's already messed up like on your car and even has holes, cut it out and weld in new pieces. Everything else, especially painting on rust, is nothing but a waste of time.
am si eu clip la fel ca la tine😉
I did the same thing excpet i do not have a welder. So i riveted a few peices of sheet metal on and sealed it with and bondo.
A very common area for rust, I have to do mine now.
Great video for a cosmetic repair, , unfortunately this repair will not go thru a UK MOT. Repair needs to be continuously seam welded anywhere not originally spot welded.
The work is shit you should remove the rust inside
The inner panel needed cutting out it had a rust hole, just repairing over something that's going to rot out in the end.
all my rockers got a golfball size whole atleast, will appreciate the guide here to repair!
Really nice job! Really obnoxious and un necessary music!
Nice job done :) However, please use gloves when doing this, the metal parts are extremely sharp when brushed dude.
that really gave me some confidence to want to do this, thank you!! also is that the waterford hills track?😂
😎👍
Dang, your ride is rusty. At least it was before you started repairing it. Good job!!
very good video!
dont use a sanding disk, the metal you exposed with it could be too thin now.
Can you use JB Weld to bond the replacement metal?
No
4 years later, where did you get the remplacement panel ? Whats the exact composition of it ? I mean its solid but bentable
hey! Just started working on my own NA, a lot less sever than this rust, so far. Do you wear any eye protection for those sparks? Are normal clear safety goggles okay, or should I have something like a welder's mask?
Extra tip. Sand Bondo shortly after it starts to harden.
Hmmm.. Waterford Hills?
Nice
Its satisfying i love your videos
Beautiful repair man...very well done
Very helpful guide! Thank you for this! I will be attempting this myself on my '95 NA I just purchased
What gauge patch of steel did you use for this?
Everything was on point until the painting part. I wish that came out nicer.
Bodge! Always Butt weld! 🤦🏻♂️
to bad to see the whole movie:(
What gauge metal?
