I do believe we have talked about that in other episodes, we just didn't particularly cover it in this episode. But you're absolutely right. I think in a previous episode we discussed that having people come back to the office full time is effectively a pay cut because you're not paying for commute when those working completely remote didn't have that during that time.

Message from a Boomer to my Millennial, Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z peers. When I graduated and got my first job at a Fortune 500 company, I got an office. I had a secretary. I decorated my office and it had a door and window. I had a private and quiet space to work. It was a nice sized office. 7 years later we went to modular furniture, because we hired more people. Real offices were for Managers and above. So, I kept my office, as by then I had been promoted to a manager. But at least the modulars had high walls that afforded the staff privacy. This was in Los Angeles, so commutes were very long, back in the 1980's a commute was an hour and a half. Today, I am 100% remote. I have NO commute, a home office with a couch and my dog. I work longer and get more done, because I don't leave at exactly 5 to get on the freeway to make a 2 hour commute one way. I also don't spend on gas, tolls, work clothes or lunch. I have seen your new spaces, with modulars that look like phones booths or picnic tables. We were treated with respect, not as children. It is crazy for them to want a 40 year old man or women to be on a picnic table after all those years of college and hard work. NO going back, it is the 21st century and remote technology gets better and more advanced every year. These rich weirdo's don't want to lose their kissazzes, fiefdoms and commercial real estate investments as Financial Districts all over the world go through the transition of remote work. Go F yourself Jamie Dimon. As far as "collaboration" their word of the day. Yesterday, I received a call from a Client in Rockville Maryland, I am in the Bay Area. They wanted to actually collaborate on a project that was urgent. I immediately, set up a Team's meeting, and I mean immediately, like on the spot. I met with the two principals, one in Maryland and the other in Boston and we came up with a plan and solution for the issue at hand. It took 20 minutes. I didn't need to drive into South San Francisco. Efficient, responsive, successful and profitable.

Remote work is here to stay! Love your example of how you were able to set up a meeting that fast. I know for our team it's nice sometimes to be like, "Hey, can we chat?" and have a Zoom call set up in seconds.

As a senior manager who is 58, I only enforce back to office because our executives put in software to track who badges in. So my people badge in we spend about half a day at work and I let them go home to beat the traffic. I only care if the work gets done. We are a global company and the expectation is to work before 8am and after 5pm so how can I really support back to office when we require our employees to be available outside of normal hours. EXECS need to know without experienced efficient employees there is no company.

@@LongDistanceWorklife So this is great timing. We were pulled into an all hands meeting just before the US Thanksgivingholiday, of course outside of normal working hours to discuss why the work life balance survey scores were so low. This is a Zoom meeting with about 30 team members from 5 different countries, 4 different time zones. Nobody wanted to comment so I did. I told them the job descriptions including mine never stated it was mandatory to regularly work outside of normal working hours and they should not only be changed but the so should the work from home policy to accommodate it. The Director argued with me that it was not mandatory to work outside of normal working hours and no changes would be made to job descriptions nor to the work from home policy. And here we were in a mandatory after hours meeting. I did this on purpose being the most experienced person on the call I wanted all the professionals in the room (we are all white collar workers), to see the true "leadership" logic and unsympathetic connection they have with employees that do the actual work. Now that was my bosses boss. My boss told me that I was being watched. 🤔 As a Gulf War Vet with a combat action ribbon I giggled like a toddler.

Rage quitting because you have to show up to work is a win how? Labor is a commodity and you end up hurting yourself exponentially worse than the inconvenience you cause to your employer. Beware of cheerleaders trying to create a new social order that harms you.

We're definitely not encouraging rage quitting although it is being seen across a lot of industries right now. We're not anti-office, but the scare tactics being used to scare people into coming back into the office aren't a good thing. Offices are and can be a very good thing.

Technically even if you have multiple locations for the same company it's considered a remote company. Remote doesn't always mean that it's a singular person working outside of the office.

You lack understanding of what middle management is there to do! There are some basic HR related activities to say the least that require hierarchy in a large organization. Are you suggesting everyone in a company should report to the CEO or VP or director or something? Like the CEO or VP or even a director level managers have HR duties take care such as annual reviews, project meetings, budget forecasts etc… besides making critical business and technical decisions and manage 100s or 1000s of staff reporting to that one person?

    • @rpabrego

All remote workers claim they are more productive working remote. Have you ever heard the lazy employee ever describe themselves as being lazy? I haven’t, I’ve heard them actually say out loud they are a hard worker. U think that even they are being more productive at home? Of course not. It’s a lie that all employees are more productive, and managers know this and see it, and track it. U really think managers enjoy babysitting grown humans? 🙄

Remote workers are just lazy PERIOD. pandemic is over. Get back to the office. No more watching reality shows or walking your doggy. You can do your chores after work. GET BACK TO THE OFFICE POWER IS HERE TO STAY!!! And it's coming so prepare for it.

    • @LongDistanceWorklife
      @LongDistanceWorklife 11 месяцев назад

We can appreciate that you're very pro-office, but not every (nor most) remote workers are as lazy as you claim. We get our work done (and sometimes even _more_ work done) than we may have with all of the in-office distractions. Those that are taking their time working remotely to goof off likely would do the same in the office. But just because someone isn't in the office doesn't mean that they're not working. Just like just because someone is in the office doesn't mean that they _are_ working. We're not anti-office, but we are pro-remote work. In whatever way that looks like for organizations (including if it means remote work isn't possible). But that being said, remote work has been a thing _long_ before COVID and it will be a thing long after. Remote Work is here to stay. 😉

I’m surprised that they didn’t go through with the implied threat of firing you, or at least actually firing your manager. I can’t get the rest of my team on board with a similar resistance movement. If I’m the only one there’s no downside to firing me as an example to everyone else considering the same, so I can’t do it. If they had to fire the entire team and hobble the company for months then they’d have to think hard before firing us. They might fire my boss in retaliation though, which would be a problem because I actually like him even though he wouldn’t be on board with us saying no, and of course the potential for retaliation by him for threatening his job.

I worked from home from graduating in my mid 20s, so long before the pandemic and I still look like I'm in that decade because I can exercise, chill, work at my peak focus, sleep longer, etc. whenever I want to. Today, we received word removing hybrid was no longer on the table lol at least for now. Only thing that changed was that there a few departments were in 2 days a week. Now, they’re in 3 to match the majority of us.

There's definitely been a large influx of people saying that if they lose flexibility, they'll find another job. We've been finding too that hybrid is fine but forcing the hybrid situation has caused a lot of issues as well. (Just look at some of the companies that have been doing it lately.) Here's hoping you can stay hybrid!

The senior management that wants return to the office are age 50+. Working in the office is what they know and what they are comfortable with. They are stuck in their butts in seats mentality and don’t want to give up control. Senior management can talk all they want about collaborating and team building. Those are just excuses. Getting people back in the office is about control.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. It's true that some senior management might lean towards traditional office setups because it's what they are familiar with. However, we shouldn't generalize everyone based on age. There are leaders of all ages who see the benefits of remote and hybrid work, fostering collaboration, and team building in new ways. And leaders of all ages that are wanting to return to the office. The key is to find a balance that suits the needs and preferences of the entire team.

I'm over 50 and am a huge proponent of remote work, or flexible hybrid at a minimum. I have had some flexibility in every job I've had since my 20s and will not ever work in a job that requires me to be in an office full time.

@@Summerdee223 Thank you for saying this! Both Wayne and his co-author Kevin Eikenberry have been teaching about remote work for decades (and they're definitely both over 50 now. 😉) So many people from all ages are realizing the benefits and power of remote work.

@@LongDistanceWorklife Except the CEOs demanding hybrid or full-time work from office don’t care about teams or what they want. Such demands are never “at your team or manager’s discretion”. “Unconditionally comply or be fired” is always the party line. “Collaboration” is, if you think about it, a meaningless buzzword. Nothing I do as a software developer requires face to face cooperation. That can easily be done over Skype, Teams, and email.

I think a lot of it is about two things: sunk cost fallacy (need to use the office space we leased) and CEOs assuming that my job works like theirs does, or should, so I must work like they do.

“When the cat’s away…the mice will play.” <<< This is a truism that the bosses know is universally true for all jobs that feel like “work”. And honestly…the workers know it too. I speak on a first-hand basis here. I own my own real estate photography company. I often edit my own photos and videos in the evening. It’s essentially a “second job” since normally I send them out to an editor for whom it is their WHOLE job. When I stay up late doing this work..I always always always have RUclips running in a second monitor. And my efficiency goes WAY down over the course of a 3 hour editing session. Because I have to look at what i want to play next on RUclips. Or I have to take a break to bust out laughing. Or whatever. (Note: I don’t “watch” the videos…my work is too visual for that…but I listen to them. And I have to stop and pick a new one every time one video comes to an end.) Sometimes I have to rush…and I can get work done very fast when I am super focused. But 9 out of 10 jobs? I take my good old time. If I gotta sit there and do it anyway…I want to do it my way at my pace. A pace where o don’t feel stressed…at ALL. And that “my way” happens to take about 30% longer to do the same amount of work. Not only that..but I have recently started booking my schedule so that I only go out to houses on Mon/Wed/Fri and do my editing on Tues/Thurs/Sat. Guess what? On “editing days” I literally only allow myself to sit and work for one hour and then I get up and walk the dog for 30 minutes. No joke. Every….hour I take a 30 minute break. I am also learning guitar. So I usually block off a full hour for guitar practice at around 1:00pm. When you are at home and you feel like you schedule is your own…you get these kinds of crazy ideas. Like… “I just want to do the work when I want to do it. As long as it gets done….that’s all that matters.” But regular employers don’t want that. They KNOW! If I worked for someone else they would just “know” that I was doing something like watching RUclips in the background and thus dialing back efficiency by 30%. But how to prove it? And to them they are like “I don’t WANT to prove it. I want to sidestep all this nonsense. How do we do that?” Get everyone back in the office. If you are stuck there you will just focus on doing the work “intensely”. Partly because the eyes of management are there. Partly just to avoid boredom. But I don’t think they are wrong at all. A certain portion of remote workers are going to be like me. Probably a SIGNIFICANT portion. And they don’t want that. Which is why I went self employed. I DO want that flexibility. I do want to be able to lift my foot off the gas 30% whenever I want. And not feel bad or have anyone inject misery into my life for it. I want to work my work the way I want and I don’t want anyone bothering me. At all.

You're definitely not alone in that, Brian. Lots of people ended up deciding to freelance or start their own businesses in the last few years especially when companies started asking people to return to the office. I know for me (Marisa) I get more productive when I'm at home because I can work in silence if I want to (whereas the office is kind of loud so I have to find a way to drown it out or else I get distracted). But even I'll find myself taking a break to check social media, find a podcast to listen to, see a funny video my husband sent me. And those brain breaks are SO important even just for a few moments. So many people have realized the flexibility they have to do just that when working from home. Taking short breaks, pursuing hobbies, or just stepping away from the desk can recharge your creativity and boost productivity. It's one of many reasons why we are pro-remote work. If the work doesn't require people to be in the office and they're still getting the work done from home (and for some, they're able to do more and faster), who cares where it's done? Some companies are on board with this idea (Automattic, Github, Buffer, and more) but some just can't see it the way that we do.

We don't feel like we're being babies about this. It's not that we don't want to work. We are working. We have been working successfully in remote environments for years. Many of us would be okay going back into the office if there's a good reason for it. But "because we said so" isn't a good reason. It's okay that you don't disagree, but no need to be rude about it. 🙂
