I'm back! I was feeling super demotivated to work on videos for a while, but I'm feeling a lot better now. This video did not help, I don't have nearly enough footage to show how ridiculous that day was and what I did get had some audio glitches. Anyways, lots of good stuff to come soon! I got a lot of great stuff in 2024, including my first mainline steam, and I can't wait to share it ;) 0:00-...

The second half of our full day railfanning the Chicago Line went much better than the first. NS ran an oil train with nose to nose warbonnets and a few CPKC run through trains. I've been really busy with some big projects lately, so that's why this video and the next few will be farther apart than normal. Even so, I hope you enjoy! • @iceclimberGD
      @iceclimberGD 13 дней назад

      Hmm, I would guess that it's around 20 trains a day? As to what time of day is best, I've found that most railroads are pretty busy between 4pm and 6pm. I don't live here so I can't give you an exact answer, unfortunately. I do know that the CSX line right next to it, the Columbus Line subdivision, is so dead that you'll be lucky to see even one train.

    How could this train move in gradient when not being possible to move on level?

    • @solarstryker
      @solarstryker 5 дней назад

      It was due to lack of friction on the tracks, with enough (sand) friction, it could make the gradient. Power was not an issue here, wheels slipping were.

  • @erichnoll874
    @erichnoll874 15 дней назад

    If this was UP, they would have more power than this for the same trailing tons, probably on the front but possibly a trailing DP which , just my uninformed opinion as I've never driven one, improves train handling en route and avoids these sorts of tire-spinning standing starts. I have seen UPs that start slowly but never revs the diesels as hard as shown here. I'll admit I'm usually too far away from the starting point to say there is no spin, most likely there is some, but never to the extent of this video. I seem to recall NS had an accident in the hilly parts of VA or WV, having inadequate power for tonnage that may have contributed to loss of control in what I seem to recall was a derailment near track speed because the braking was inadequate. I may be misremembering but I was horrified by the NTSB report imagining myself in the cab followed by a huge out of control train for all practical purposes. Cool video though. Am I right about NS having a reputation for running trains with inadequate power?

    I heard no slack shudder as the train accelerated slowly. I always thought the train needed to back up slightly to give the cars slack before resuming acceleration. Ideally, you want to pull a few cars that one second before the slack is taken up to pull the other cars further down as inertial slowly builds.

    The power of the EMD SD70ACC is amazing! The sounds of a 710 at near full throttle, incredible. This locomotive appeared to start this entire train from stop all by itself. I'm amazed at how smooth and refined the 710 is at high revs, as smooth as a BMW inline 6. EMD is the best of the best when it comes to prime movers. Just ask towboat operators.
