Charlie's Day Out: Live Action Version?
ohh man I can't wait to watch and learn from these!
That's a good cosplay😀
Hi Jay, is there a way we can access the base human model proxy shape which you mentioned in the class?
SwitchCam seems to work in maya 2025!
It seems like enable color management is saved to scene file not the user settings. So you have to disable it every time when you start a new scene.
I have searched this course all over the internet but nothing, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Me also starting!
I stopped doing manual camera matching as soon as discovered an open source software called fSpy. It allows you to move the vanishing points in an intuitive way and dynamically gives you the camera settings to use in any 3D application.
when i switch between perspective or orthographic nothing show in script editor!! can you help?
In Script Editor top menu History > Echo All Commands. Make sure it's enabled.
Rat fink rules
I don't know how to express my emotions right now, I'm really happy and grateful when I see this playlist. I will explore and join your classes. Thank you so much for sharing these helpful knowledge ❤
Hi! First of all, im really thankful that you uploaded these videos. So helpful, especially when you are insecure about a lot of things. Would you still agree with the triangle statement? That triangles are perfectly fine (as long as the shading is correct I assume) or has this changed? It kinda wonders me because on that bended area (where the 3 wholes are) are a lot of triangles which should give shading issues or not? or is this because its actually snapping to the sculpt which corrects its normal directions on those triangles?
this actually be one of the best maya tutorials out there on RUclips, i'm newbie and this channel help me fully. Thanks!
JAY! Great to see you finally :) I had the best experience learning alot from you in this class, despite my previous experience. Great feedback, great lectures. You the man!!!
Awesome!
Jay this was a bad ass course that you made for CGMA! Dude, 20 of us started the course, and only about 4 finished it. lol. If you remember not only did the students have to work on their sci fi vehicle, but you had assigned other little homeworks on top of that. Like making landing gear and thrusters. Yeah it was a tough course, a lot to digest. I think in the past 4 years, there was like one former Call of Duty artist that stepped in to be the instructor for this class. Other than that, the class has been empty. No one has the Kung Fu skills to teach this class anymore!
Thank you so much
I fixed the original if you want to use it, hit me up
Great stuff!
Dang Jay, you never disappoint and I love the knowledge sharing! Miss ya bud!
Love this Jay! We look forward to the costume you make every year. Rat Fink is now my favorite one you made.
Never tone it down bro.
Today was Rat Fink’s birthday
Awesome!
Great video…but FORDS EAT CHEVYS FOR BREAKFAST
AY!
Hi, CV curve tool is behaving strangely and couldn't find a solution to it from google. When I draw on the vertical plane that is a live surface, CV curve tool snaps to a quad center and won't let me place the points freely. If the planes subdivision level is set to 0, just like in the video, CV curve tool gets stuck to the middle of the plane and won't move from there. None of the snapping options are in effect, that are next to the make live button and CV curve tool behaves normally, when drawing on a surface that is not live. Hope that makes sense and there is a solution for it, thanks in advance and many thanks for the tutorials!
I've had this issue in the past. I will investigate!
Thank you for what you did
OMG this might be one of the best maya tutorials out there on RUclips. I love how you demonstrate every essential knowledge before going in depth of a pacific method. I’ve using Maya for 2 years and still missing out on some useful things you’ve shared on your videos. Thank you so much 🙏
Best hard surface material I ever found for Maya. Thanks
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been learning Maya, so you sharing your whole setup, scripts, and everything has been an invaluable!
Thank you so much. The script was giving you same camera position each time when you switch cameras but this method is putting the view in different place!
see above
Seems like the orthographic switch in ViewCube didn't reserve the camera rotation when you switch back to perspective view.
Your work is unbelievable! Thank you so much for making this available! Even though I am not very interested in modelling (simply because I suck at it). But seeing your workflow really helps so much.
Very helpful. Thanks for uploading
Why did you take it into ZBrush to get those shapes? Wouldn't it have been possible through regular poly modelling in Maya?
You're absolutely right! Normally I don't go to ZBrush at all but I wanted an excuse to talk about hard surface sculpting as well as a hi/res to retopo workflow. It is a viable option but in my opinion it's very time consuming. I love to use Quad Draw but I typically draw my topology on top of shapes I've made in maya.
Thank you so much for the content. I freaking love hard surface modeling and a good chance to learn Maya.
Non
absolute gold. thanks a lot
That Razor Crest v Tie Fighter shot is one of the best Sci-Fi dogfighting scenes ever... some incredibly iconic moments on your reel man, great work!
Awesome work Jay. Thanks for sharing
The quality of your work is incredibly inspiring. Thank you for sharing these reels!
Awesome.
Great work! And thanks for sharing your recent course on hard surface modeling.
Amazing work!
OMG. Insane stuff.
Hey Jay, are you switching to this RUclips account as your main now?
This is my only channel I think...? Anyway I'm just uploading these reels here for posterity, I only had them on Vimeo before.
@@jaysethan You're right sorry! i was confuse about the CGMA channel where you had some interviews and i think this course was there before (to buy)!
pure awesomeness
Is there any way we can gain access to the reference image you are using?
Sure! I will add it to the google drive link in week 1
Really nice series! But I have one question: is it ok to leave those long quads, for example, in the rearvectorplateB mesh? A modeling supervisor that I once met told me that in production you have to keep quads as similar as possible, otherwise texture will stretch a lot
This is a great question! At ILM we use Renderman, which doesn't have this issue, but Maya defaults will cause texture stretching when smoothing. What you will need to do if you plan to render using smooth preview in Maya is go to the mesh's shape node in the attribute editor and go to Smooth Mesh/OpenSubdiv Controls. By default the UV boundary smoothing is set to "Maya Catmull-Clark". If you switch that to "Preserve Edges and Corners" and just below check "Propagate UV Corners" you will get rid of that stretching behavior. I've linked an image of 2 examples here: photos.app.goo.gl/YcRQH38ecw48Ps888 You can see the difference in how the edges behave in the UV view. Adding extra topology minimizes this effect but only changing these settings can get rid of it.
Now if you have a whole scene of meshes that you need to change this attribute for you will want to select them all and use Windows/General Editors/Attribute Spreadsheet. To get at the attributes you will need to select all the meshes' shape nodes. The easiest way I know is to go to your Outliner’s Display menu and check on “Shapes”. Then in your viewport, click and drag to select all your meshes, hover over the outliner and hit the down arrow key. This will select the shape nodes for your selected meshes. In the Attribute spreadsheet go to the “All” tab and in the filter above the attributes you want to look for are “Osd Fvar Boundary” (switch to “Preserve Edges and Corners”) and “Osd Fvar Propagate Corners” (switch this to on). Here’s an image example: photos.app.goo.gl/4wYjcSEpwbjLQPKP6
It is also important to note that these options exist inside of the Mesh/Smooth tool as well. If you ever need to smooth a mesh that has already been UVed you will want to make sure the UV Boundary Smoothing settings in there are also set to "Preserve Edges and Corners" with "Propagate UVs" checked. Hope this helps!
Did Alex ever get out of the TV? It’s been years
This series is excellent. Thanks for putting it on RUclips!
