Total Transformation: Bringing Life Back to Damaged Land, Barren Quarry to Abundant Prairie - Year 1
Within 9 months, the barren landscape began to teem with life.
In this video we take you on a captivating journey of transformation as we breathe life back into a once-ravaged landscape in the Texas Hill Country. Witness the remarkable metamorphosis from a chalky almost pure calcium bedrock quarry into a flourishing ecosystem.
Our story begins with the most devastated 3 acres, where mining had left the land barren, resembling a desolate wasteland. The soil, devoid of life and vitality, was tightly compacted with zero organic matter. Infiltrating rainwater into the soil seemed like an improbable dream. However, we refused to be daunted and we did NOT give up on restoring this land.

Rainwater is generally better for plants than well or municipal water so you can see a big difference when irrigating with it. Additionally, well water can calcify your plumbing fixtures and damage appliances if you don’t flush out the calcium build up periodically. There’s a lot of detail I can’t cover in these sho...

Raintanks play a vital role in helping us to ensure we have clean water when we need it while taking pressure off of the aquifers. I've seen some cool work in places like Portugal using quarries to create water features to regenerate the land. They found so many new species that hadn't been seen in over 40 yrs in that area. There was a lot of excitement over carnivorous plants because they require a very rich and healthy environment to survive.

    I’m glad you guys highlighted the fact you had to add some organic matter and life to the soil before seeding, many native plant enthusiasts don’t like hearing the notion of adding amendments to soil because it’s not what the plants want because it’s thrives in lean soil, But many fail to realize that the soil we see nowadays is much more degraded if it was former farmland or disturbed by other human interventions.

    • @symbiosistx
      @symbiosistx 23 дня назад

      Indeed! Native plants can thrive under poor conditions but that doesn’t mean it is the only way and it’s just hard to get any infiltration at all into soil with zero organic matter and no cover.

      We're really just speeding up nature's own healing abilities because these folks have the funds and want to see the results in their lifetime. I think it's admirable that they choose to invest in their land like this. They could just buy fancy cars or something =) Land access is a big issue for those of us who are not wealthy and meanwhile those who "own" (I prefer steward to own since we're really just visiting here) land struggle to maintain it due to lack of funds, time and labor. It's a big puzzle for everyone but we have to make solutions and create examples everywhere we can. We need to be solution oriented or nothing will ever get better.

Listen to Our Natives Indigenous Elders who were blessed to share these known knowledge for us to regain responsibility to ensuring the proper use of land and cultivate a healthier future together. I truly believe these entities that distrespct our environments should be held accountable as a war crime on environments and those that rely on them to survive. These barbaric ways of the past has never served us and has contributed to lost civilizations and natural resources. Should be the thing of the past that disconnects us from our future.

    I just bought land in Virginia. The bottom 4 acres of flatland is damaged. It was a landing spot for the timber company. It has been barren since the 80’s by looking at google earth timelapse. I’m laying branches all over and covering with wood chips. In one season there’s a lot of weeds that have taken hold. It’s so satisfying to watch this land grow healthy and green in the images! I don’t know what I’m doing I’m just trying to give cover to the bare earth.

It’s great to see someone using it in such a challenging environment. I just use ours on the farm - mixed in with compost and stable manure mostly.

    If you cut your squares halfway through the wire (as opposed to cutting very close to the end) you leave wire tabs on both ends to secure the ends and form a circle. Using gloved hands and needle nose pliers you can get the wire tabs wrapped close enough it is not a scratching/cutting/stabbing threat. Additionally, it makes the circle more rigid because the wire splice is double reinforced (the two end squares overlap and there are two places wire is wrapped) and cannot fold or bend the splice. Finally, it saves the cost for the red wire, cutting the red wire and having to pick up all of the scrap wire ends.

    • @symbiosistx
      @symbiosistx Месяц назад

      Fair point but we’ve done it both ways and prefer the irrigation wire wraps for many reasons. You’re right though, that way works great too.

    It's so funny how this kind of talking would have been absolute hippie talk a few decades ago that many people wouldn't have taken serious at all and now it elevated to scientific and practical proven methods. It's so beautiful to see how this worlds connect (spirtual/hippie kind of thoughts of connections to the land, science and practical work). It's like you can really see humanity evolving by integrating these different ideas not only on a philosophical level but a hands on healing eco systems way. Like you said humans taking on their role (again), finding their place in a balanced eco system.
