I think you forgot the key thing about Menendez's indictment: that he was acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Egypt and Qatar. The local businessmen bribing him were go-betweens. Also fwiw Kim was the first candidate to declare against Menendez, followed by Murphy a short time later.

Our country is fucked. The political situation so screwed up that it prevents any other political party from running, and sways the system towards insiders with lots of money. Even if Kim wins (which he probably will, hopefully) he's a democrat that will likely be corrupted by the power and money in the US senate that corrupts so many other of our politicians. It prevents real people from being heard. We have a shitty system.

This was to some extent implied but I don't think it was stated enough, Tammy Murphy did not have any political experience besides being first lady. It's likely that most voters don't know her role with the Murphy administration, or if they do they don't care and just see her as a pawn for Murphy to control two state wide offices (a view that probably isnt false). It feels yucky at best, and replacing a corrupt democratic senator with the governor's wife furthers the view of NJ having corrupt politics, often being dubbed the "The Soprano State" both as a nod to the show being set here, but also the highly corrupt politics of the state. Also in most polls Kim had a STRONG lead, and while this was to some extent touched, the rank and file democrat was very pro-Kim, with the New Jersey college dems backing Murphy.
