Next Generation Viticulture Programme
Vineyard profitability is key to ensuring a thriving New Zealand wine industry. As costs continue to rise, we must adapt and innovate to remain profitable. A new research programme led by Bragato Research Institute (BRI) has been designed to address these challenges. The programme, called Next Generation Viticulture, will research growing vines to be more efficient at turning sunlight into grapes, reducing growers’ input cost per unit of output.
“The programme’s vision is to increase the profitability of the New Zealand wine industry by improving vineyard productivity, reducing variability in yields, while delivering exceptional quality New Zealand wines the world demands,” says New Zealan...

Grape Days 2024 | Grape sugar loading & harvest date implications for red winemaking | Damian Martin

The growth and development of the grape berry comprises four stages. The last stage, from the end of berry sugar loading to harvest, strongly influences red wine quality. In a 2021 collaboration between a commercial Marlborough winery, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, Bragato Research Institute and Plant & Food Research, detailed Pinot noir berry sampling was conducted to determine t...

As a viticulturist or grower, one of the most important documents used in the growing season is the New Zealand Winegrowers’ Vineyard Spray Schedule. 96% of New Zealand’s vineyard-producing area is SWNZ-certified, and over 90% of the wine produced in NZ is processed in SWNZ-certified facilities. An important part of SWNZ certification is adhering to the approved sprays and requirements in the S...
Grape Days 2024 | Improving the outcomes of mealybug insecticide | Dr Vaughn Bell & Andrew Blakeman
Просмотров 603 месяца назад
Mealybugs spread grapevine viruses and generate honeydew supporting sooty mould. Due to these risks, the Bragato Research Institute funded a three-year project from 2020. The goal was to improve industry understanding and use of insecticides targeting mealybugs on grapevines. We collaborated with growers in Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, and Marlborough. Spray diaries (2018 to 2022) were reviewed for m...
Grape Days 2024 | Management of GTD through remedial surgery | Dr Eline van Zijll de Jong

Grapevine trunk diseases are a threat to the economic sustainability of the New Zealand wine industry, causing significant yield and quality reductions and also shortening the lifespan of vineyards. Grower reliance on remedial surgery to improve vine productivity and longevity is expected to increase as New Zealand’s aging vineyards continue to decline due to grapevine trunk disease. Infected v...
Grape Days 2024 | Long spur pruning, an alternative to cane pruning | Yuichi Ando

The COVID pandemic brought Marlborough's labour shortage into sharp relief. As a result, vineyard production costs increased at an accelerated rate and growers needed to explore alternative production systems to maintain financial sustainability. One of the biggest vineyard expenditures is winter pruning, and for a long time, cane pruning has been the favoured pruning method in the region. Viti...
Grape Days 2024 | Water use efficiency of 11 rootstocks under deficit irrigation | Braden Crosby

New adaptation strategies are required to deal with the changing climate and using more water-efficient rootstocks is a potential solution. This project investigates the effect of rootstock on 30-year-old Chardonnay vines (Clone 6) grown in the Renwick area of Marlborough. Eleven rootstocks were assessed over two seasons (2023 and 2024) and the primary objective was to evaluate the rootstocks' ...
Grape Days 2024 | Vineyard management systems influence on Mycorrhizal fungi | Dr Romy Moukarzel

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) offer significant potential for sustainable agriculture ecosystems, including vineyards. We showed that AMF had a positive influence on vine growth, nutrient uptake, and tolerance to environmental and biological stresses. Understanding how management practices affect AMF diversity and composition is crucial for harnessing their benefits. We surveyed twelve vin...

Trichoderma, a genus of fungi present in soils, could enhance drought tolerance and water use efficiency in grapevines, critical factors for sustainable viticulture in the face of climate change. This study investigates the impact of Trichoderma application on young, grafted Sauvignon Blanc grapevines grown in various soil types under controlled drought conditions in a glasshouse setting. The p...

The breeding and use of disease resistant varieties (DRV) has been underway for over 150 years but has had a chequered past. During the 20th century, grapevine breeding in Italy, France and Germany produced a range of DRVs that have similar organoleptic attributes of their Vitis vinifera parents coupled with genetic resistance from other Vitis species to the key vine pathogens, powdery and down...

Evaluating water use efficiency and drought tolerance of various rootstocks

New adaptation strategies are required to deal with climate change, and using more efficient rootstocks is potentially a sustainable solution. It is generally known that rootstocks can confer favourable properties on the grafted plant, however, the New Zealand wine industry does not have robust knowledge relevant to local conditions to make informed choices about the best rootstock options for ...
Long spur pruning as an alternative to cane pruning for Sauvignon blanc in Marlborough

The combination of increasing production costs, a constrained labour supply and increasing vineyard area all signal a need to explore alternative production systems for producing Sauvignon Blanc. Long spur pruning has shown promise as an alternative to cane pruning for Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough, with the potential for reduced labour requirements at a similar yield and quality. Spur pruning...
Improving remedial surgery practices for control of grapevine trunk disease
Просмотров 437Год назад
As the average age of vineyards across New Zealand increases, grape growers and managers increasingly recognise the effects of grapevine trunk disease on both vine productivity and longevity. One option that can potentially “renew” and extend the life of infected vines is remedial surgery. This procedure involves removing the trunk above the graft union and growing a new shoot to replace the ol...

uh nothing new here? back to the ol' spur pruning method. why call it long spur, how nodes do you need on each cordon to call it "long"?

Please answer me few profesional questions. 1) the name/type of rootstock used. 2) the aproximative calendar data you pick up grapes . 3) texture and PH of that soil. 4) average raining during all year and average rain separately in may-august season. 5) why you don't use 4 young cordons of one year old, than using 4 cordons of two years old, sprinkeld with 4 eyes cutted, one year new "branches"? And 6) tell me detaliately, how much food offer to that plant, during one year around. Tell the quantityes of organic and chemical food. Thank you. If I will remember another questions, I will write back. A big hug and all the best❤

looks like Sauv Blanc? Not a fan of this pruning for reds, but for whites it's ok. I think your spurs are too long though, Only 2 buds required/spur, not 4, although 4 will yield well.

Farò quella vostra potatura a doppio binario, interessante. Ciao alla prossima. 😳😊🤔💪✌️

I understand spur pruning and cane pruning but it seems that you are mixing the two together when you mention two replacement spurs and two working spurs together with 4 cordons with spurs for next years producing vines. By replacement spurs I assume that means that the 4 cordons your currently have on your vines will be replaced from the two spur replacement canes but I don't see in your pruning routine when they are replaced. You currently end up with 4 cordons with spurs for next year producing vines but I don't know what you mean by the two working spurs - what do they do besides just grow producing vines and if that is there purpose it seems to be redundant alongside the spurs along the cordons.
