Our Homemade Wooden Boat - Lake St Clair
A few years ago I built a 9 ft cedar strip wooden boat in my basement. My Son was in town, so we took the boat out for a cruise on Anchor Bay (Poor Man's Beach) in Lake St Clair. It was the day of the Selfridge Air Show. Although it doesn't offer a good view of the jets, my favorite way to watch the show is from a boat. The weather started looking sketchy, so we made a run back to the boat ramp.

We nailed the fall colors at their peak during our mid-October camping trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We stayed in our tiny home on wheels, a 10ft teardrop camper which we built from scratch. After a day of hiking the Empire Bluffs trail, we enjoyed a hot shower and a campfire at the Platte River Campground. The next day we hiked the Cottonwood Trail on the Pierce Stocking ...
Kincardine Ontario - Scottish Pipe Band Parade

Kincardine Ontario is becoming one of our favorite harbors to visit on the shores of Lake Huron. In the summer, the town offers a Scottish bagpipe parade through town. It's a participant's parade, and everyone is welcome to join in. We sailed to Kincardine (3) times over the last few years and this video is a compilation of the bagpipe parade, concerts in the park, and even the Battle of the Ba...
The North Channel - (Total Trip Synopsis)

After much dreaming and planning, we finally realized our goal of sailing to the North Channel of the Georgian Bay in Lake Huron. We sailed our Catalina 30 sailboat for 17 days, and covered over 400 nautical miles. In our trip, we saw a bagpipe parade in Kincardine, and visited the shops in Tobermory before reaching the Killarney Mountain Lodge in Killarney. Then, we spent nearly a week anchore...

We were sad to depart Kincardine on the last leg of our North Channel trip. We sailed 60 nautical miles back home under a moderate tail wind. We had a chance to think about lessons learned from the trip, and what we might do differently the next time. All in all, we returned home very happy with our Catalina 30 sailboat

We set sail in our Catalina 30 at 5:30 am for a 68 nautical mile journey to Kincardine Ontario. The calm conditions of the day would offer a serene trip compared to the rough conditions we experienced sailing from Kincardine to Tobermory at the beginning of the trip. While offshore, we were visited by a small songbird that landed on the boat to take a rest. Some members of the crew gave the bir...

We set sail from Killarney on a 44 nautical mile voyage to Tobermory. The journey started out peacefully, but while sailing miles from shore, we were visited by a bat. He swooped a little too close to Mary and all pandemonium broke loose. Eventually, the bat continued on his way, and the sails on our Catalina 30 were filled with a perfect breeze.

Right you are about the kincardine harbour, but there's more. As a local from the rival town of Port Elgin I can vouch for the harbour honestly being way better, the hockey players more skilled, the people are more down to earth, the girls prettier, the food tastes better, and the air is cleaner. Don't waste your time in kinkerdink that's the fact of the matter.

We are at the same place. Initially I wanted a Catalina 380 but found out that slip, haulout, and transient fees were going to be very high. Having had two 29s (Ericson and C&C) I yearned for something bigger but just enough to have some additional room with the two kids. So we ended up in a Catalina 320. Wasn't perfectly what I wanted, but was enough. Biggest issue was storage for longer journeys. Fast forward to now, kids out of the nest, it actually IS a perfect boat. It meets a lot of the same criteria that your boat does, and has a nice turn of speed. I have several upgrades, replacements and improvements planned for 2025. Retirement in 2026 so it needs to be ready. We are lucky we are on the Chesapeake and was just out sailing last weekend. But that was it.

Did you ever get lost, or was the trail generally discernible? Was any of the trail along dangerous cliffs? How long did it take you to reach the top?

    • @SVBlueLatitudes
      @SVBlueLatitudes 6 месяцев назад

The trail up Fraser Hill is marked by ribbons along the trail. When we were there the ribbons were fairly visible and easy to follow. The trail is pretty rugged and involves a lot of climbing over rocks. There are no dangerous cliffs along the trail; however, when you reach the top, if you wonder very far there are crevasses where the rock has split open. It's not a place you would want to wonder around at night!

I brought my boat around from Manistee Michigan. We stopped in Port Sanilac on the way to Cleveland. I was in the V berth. and I heard my crewmember say hey A sign here says they have great water here I said all right fill up the water tank next thing I heard him say was oh that filled up quick I said did you fill up the water tank he said oops I messed up. I filled up the holding tank it was 8:15 PM at this time. We were planning on leaving at 2 - 3 AM to be at the mouth of the St Clair to be on Lake Erie around 5ish was the plan. I said well now we are fu barred we can’t leave with a full holding tank ok not those exact words maybe a few 🤬thrown in 😂😂😂Anyway I found 4 phone numbers left a message like this on all voice mails. Hello I don’t know if you can help me or not but I’m at your gas dock on my sailboat and my crew member has just filled my holding tank with your wonderful water that was meant for my water tank. Is there anyway that I can get somebody down here at this time to give me a pump out. I was planning on leaving at 2-3 AM to hit the mouth of the Saint Clair river at dawn Thank you in advance. About a half hour goes by and my phone rings and I say hello and the voice on the phone says is this captain with the dumb ass crew member that filled the holding tank instead of the water tank I said yes sir it is he says well I have sarah on the way down and I turned my head to the left this girl is walking right towards me. I said I think she is here thank you very much I said, are you sarah she said yes I am I said thank you so much for doing this she was just smiling from ear to ear so she proceeded to pump out the holding tank proceeded to let my buddy Dwight know that we were never going to let him live this down. Dwight handed her $25 said thank you very much for the rescue. I said thank you very much again asked her if she happened to have a space heater she did and let us borrow it which was awesome we had been freezing for 2 days. Was only 45 degrees during the day and very cold at night anyway We ordered a pizza ate showered went to sleep was out of there at about 3:30 in the morning and we did he hit Lake Erie at the approximate time we were there at 4:45 middle bass by 915. I got a good nights rest didn’t even hear the storm that hit us. I was so tired. Left middle bass around 8:30 in the morning and was at Lorain Harbor approximately 1 PM Great trip took 3.5 days Left Manistee Mi at 8:30 am Friday in Lorain at 1pm Monday

I typically don't sail with just the main up because that does give a bit of weather helm. I find I can usually balance the boat pretty well in calm seas, but when the waves start getting big, it can take a lot of effort to counter the waves (especially quartering seas from the stern)

It was always worth it and never became uninteresting. I am glad you share your experience. I sailed out of the Canadian side, from just across the lake from Sanilac.

The North Channel is certainly an amazing place to visit. I share your thoughts that I could never take enough trips to feel like I had explored everything or it would ever become uninteresting!

Really like what you did for the Bimini. Is that bead and cove cedar strips cold molded into that shape?

Thank you. You're exactly right on the construction technique for the dodger. Using the aluminum frame the boat already had for the dodger, I created a pattern, and made (3) plywood bulkheads to create a mold to build the hard dodger. Then I laid up 1/4" strips of cedar and pine. Then, I covered the top and bottom with 1 layer of fiberglass cloth.

@@SVBlueLatitudes I would love to learn a bit more detail about the pattern and bulkheads. Would you happen to have any pictures from the build process? Thank you!

That’s one scary day trip; night sailing in unfamiliar waters! I sailed my slightly smaller and lighter Catalina 28 to the North Channel (primarily the Benjamin’s) last year but took the easy way; Michigan coast to Presque Isle and a short crossing to Meldrum Bay Canada. From there to Turnbulls, Spanish, and the Benjamin’s. Return trip pretty much the same. I’m planning a return trip this year but will probably do the same unless I get a really good weather window. That’s just too much open water for me. Last year there were so many thunderstorm watches that I sailed early every day to get into a port by early afternoon, once just an hour before a storm passed through! Two years ago, I got caught in THREE consecutive storms crossing Saginaw Bay solo, leaving on a cloudless morning. I feared broaching or pitchpoling in the huge waves! I will never put myself in that situation again!

That sounds like a great trip. We're planning to sail up the American side and hit the Benjamins on our next trip.

Thanks for sharing yr trip. Curious if U ever have used a preventer on yr boom. It really sways back n forth when the sails down. Keeps boom solid when main is up or down and especially important when wind is behind U. Looking forward to yr north channel episodes. Havent been before but hopefully in the future. Cheers from Canada!

Thank you Bruce. We did start using a preventer for running with the wind this year. It makes down-wind sailing a lot more relaxing. I would have been a great idea to control the boom as we were motoring out of the channel.... although the boat might be sad to miss the opportunity to whack me in the head with the boom.

Great video. What boat do you have and how much diesel did you go through.

thank you! The boat is a Catalina 30 MKIII. I usually burn about 1/2 gallon per hour when motoring. In calm seas that yields about 9 mpg.

Great to watch you guys on the water and enjoying the other side of the lake. I put close to 50k NM under the keel, mostly Lake Huron and the North Channel. Too old to sail now, but lots of good memories. BTW, never underestimate the North Channel. The roughest water I ever encountered was on a run from John Island to Gore Bay. Waves 12 to 15 feet and breaking. No rudder control in broken wave crests. The boat survived better than the crew! Fair sailing and safe harbours to you.

Wow, I didn't even know the waves got that big in the North Channel. I hope to avoid that!!
