Guilderland High School 1996 Senior Video, Graduation Version
In my high school, I worked in our TV studio that produced a morning short TV program we aired like morning announcements to the high school and was later broadcast on a local cable station. (See the Mike Pinder videos). This video was supposed to be aired on our last morning of school as seniors. However, mid-production (I remember it was only half done), our producer/advisor Mr. Viscio showed it to our principal (Mr. Whipple), and the video was re-purposed and shown during the graduation ceremony instead.
I ended up creating a second "senior video" to air on the last day in its place. I still don't know where that is.

Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues at a high school: 1995 - behind the scenes
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.6 лет назад
In 1995, Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues visited my high school to spend an hour being interviewed by a never-so-nervous high school senior (me). However, we got hit with a snow storm that had police telling people to stay off the roads. But my classmate crew, our producer, and myself, where already there and setup. Phone tag was played via an old school answering machine that I had to dial into...
Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues Interview: 1995 (by high school me)

At the time, I was a high school student at Guilderland Central High School. Mike Pinder, founding member of The Moody Blues was touring book stores and came to be interviewed on a suddenly snowy night. Forgive the video quality. Video path: SVHS source - SVHS edited master - VHS copy (1995) - DVD recording (2013) - Rip to PC (2018)

Not seeking to start any fights but Mike's memory of 40 years ago doesn't agree with articles published in the English music press of the time. Marc Cushman's book Long Distance Voyagers is 700 pages of English music press excerpts. According to those excerpts: Go Now was #1 in the UK in late January 1965. The Moodies Mk2 were still playing Moodies Mk1 R&B covers until the "you're bloody rubbish" incident in the Spring of 1967. The Moodies Mk2 found the money for the first Mellotron (a lightly used one) early in the summer of 1967. It was £300 which is $6114 in 2024. (The English inflation between any two years is available on the Bank of England website. The exchange rate for late August 2024 was $1.32 per £.) A new Mellotron in 1967 was £1300 which is $26,500 in 2024. It likely was not $5k in 1967 as inflation to 2024 is $47k! The very first single the Moodies Mk2 released using the Mellotron was 22 Sep 1967 on Love and Beauty by Mike Pinder.

I wish people would stop whining about the Moody Blues "not being the same" after Pinder left. Is any band the same when a member leaves? They kept making great music regardless and it was Pinder that left, he wasn't booted out. He made his own albums also which frankly were okay but not fantastic. Yes it takes the combination of the whole group to make really grand music but people have their own lives to lead and what we want doesn't matter one bit.

My Big Brother passed away a couple of years ago. I wish he could be here to listen to this with me. Who knows, maybe him and Mike Pender are somewhere talking about this now. Along with Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge, Denny Laine...I would love to just sit there and listen to them talk.

What fascinated me about this interview were two things - first, the circumstances of Mike's leaving the group. His remarks squares with my understanding, except for the evident misunderstanding by those in England as to why Mike could not return. With as eloquent as all of these gentlemen are, I cannot believe that there was animosity between them - misunderstandings, sure, but not animosity. Second, the manner in which these guys developed their music. I would have thought that Ray Thomas was more knowledgeable about chord progression and basic theory, but evidently not. Pinder, without a doubt, had the most "musician" chops in that regard. I've read several accounts where he collaborated with other MB members in developing the architecture of the song that the composer (Hayward, Lodge, Thomas) had brought to the group, and did so without expectation beyond just being a member of the group. Sorta makes me wish for the 2,876th time that I'd studied piano in my youth.

Thanks so much for this, Bill. What a great and insightful interview. I first saw Mike in concert was when I was in 9th grade and played keyboards in a rock band when I was in 9th grade. I laughed when, after I commented to my wife that Mike was being interviewed by a HS student, only to see that it was, in fact, the case. Don't appologize for the quality of the video. It is great for the period. In my opinion, it actually adds to the authenticity :-) Thanks for such a great interview. Probably the best interview with Mike that I 've seen.

Thankyou Mike for gifting the world with your talent and bringing joy to all.

When you think that within only a few years, Mike went from playing R&B piano to contributing to the Moodies as he did in sound, composition and direction, it is both a blessing and a stunning achievement. It must have been an incredible time to be creating music as art. Excellent interview!

Any time I've heard Mike speak he has been thoughtful and sincere. The other members of the Moody Blues do as well, but Mike brings a profound honesty that appears to be ever searching (just like in the Lost Chord). The interview here is wonderful. Despite Bill's youth, he asks significant, informed, relevant and meaningful questions, better than most adults, even in the music industry do, without the hip or snarky manner you typically hear. Mike responds in kind, giving carefully-considered replies and fully respecting the interview. Without patronizing, Mike actually seems to appreciate having an opportunity to share his perspective. You can't help but wish other band members would do the same, but now, 27 years since this interview, we know such contemplation, understanding and reconciliation would never come. Ah, such is life: "We get too soon oldt, undt too late schmart"...Boundless caring and compassion, along with being a committed family man is how I see Mike Pinder. The fact that the band (seemingly) made little effort to bring back such an essence into the group does not reflect well on them...

I finally understand why the meeting, that took me two an a half years to set up, failed. For the sake of the band members; it was your agent that caused the uneasiness between Justin and myself. I was very disappointed that I could not talk with Micheal, because he wasn't on that tour. Truthfully, I blamed Justin for that and I should never have done that. Sorry Justin. Micheal, I have managed to compose 70 songs for The Gnomes of New Hope. Maybe we'll talk about that again sometime. Thanks for the interview.
