When John starts dancing, the host says to him, "Make 'em talk, John". How sweet was that?
Here is the love, isn’t it so?
What an absolute treasure to be able to see this so long after
Was he before Mr. Bojangles, Bill Robinson?
I never heard of him; I had gone looking for "Me and My Shadow," always curious about the oldest recording
Dixieland Charleston. Wow.
I’m non plussed by the gifts of John Bubbles- the daring, the fluidity the power of his Charleston. He renews the dance completely. I feel blessed to get to see these films of his performances. Gratefully susan
Tap dance teacher (1920) to Fred Astaire. Fabulous!

Love it!!
Amazing. Learned about this star only from reading NYT story about Ayodele Casel!
He got a shadow aura in this video
I actually found myself watching his "shadow" dancing behind him.
Bravooooooo
Fred Astaire referred to John Bubbles as the greatest dancer of his generation; John actually mentored Astaire and coached him back in the 1930's. Marvelous!
Classic and class at its very best. Great listing :)
The GOAT!
yessssss
One of the greatest tap dancers of all time.
The woman is Dorothy Fields, who often collaborated with Jerome Kern as the lyricist. It's very rare to see her and the great John Bubbles danced to many Kern/Fields songs.
bill bailey, bill bojangles robinsons, and john bubbles, nicholas bros, just a few that made way for hines hines dad, been vareem, james brown and even MJ and all the break dancers
You forgot Charles "Honey" Coles
@@jamiekatz7591 and I also forgot about Sammy Davis Jr, and there were others
The host was absolutely entranced the entire time. Bubbles hit that break, and the host looked at his other guest like, "Did you see that?!"
I first saw him in Cabin in the Sky. I never knew how amazing and renown he was.

Many don't know that the drug-peddler character,' Sporin' Life', in the Gershwins' 'Porgy and Bess' was actually based on a VERY young, Cab Calloway. Before anyone knew who Calloway was, Gerswhin had already been fascinated by his untapped, and largely unknown talent, and while amid the premature stages of developing 'Porgy', would secretly attend Calloway's earliest performances on Tin Pan Alley. When approached to play the role that he inspired, Calloway had to turn down the offer because the unexpected success of 'Minnie the Moocher;, the late bandleader's signature number. Because of Calloway's situation, John Bubble's-- one half of the the early Vaudeville team, 'Buck and Bubbles', was subsequently offered the role, and was cast as the first 'Sportin' Life' in the musical's premiere..
Wonderful History Lesson
@@ritawalker439 Thanks, Rita.
Mr. Bubbles is the dancer that Fred Astaire patterned his signature 'hat and cane' routine after.
That was the "Bojangles" number...ostensibly an homage to tap dancer Bill Robinson (who danced with Shirley Temple), but really to Bill Sublette, noted for the percussion style of the heels.
There is footage of him in 1937 and he is FAST as well as being good. Here he is more refined. He was particular dynamite as a younger man! 💗
@@MsZoedog66 I think I lost this item (among many) in a hurricane years ago, so I'll have to check. But, I once taped a PBS Gershwin anniversary special, (I believe it last for 2-3 evenings...that is, an episode for each.).When the documentary began to focus on 'Porgy and Bess', the Gershwin Estate allowed the production company to show some of the rarest edits and footage from the rehearsals of the original 1936 production. Of the ragged and flawed footage shown, there was a VERY short clip of Bubbles ( as 'Sportin' Life') practicing a dance routine on stage. I preface the following because, at this point, i wasn't too familiar with Sublett's dancing as I was with his singing -- esp. with his, then partner, Buck. I mention this because, at one point, i thought what I was viewing were the sad remains of footage that was preserved and spliced back together by various editors over the years. At one point during Bubbles' routine, it appears as if-- while one portion of his body were facing in one direction (from waist up), both his hips (and legs) suddenly snap and then rotate the opposite direction. It looks freakish to say the least! But, mind you, I simply wrote this weird visual off as the result of years of edits. Cut to YEARS later. I'm watching Vincent Minnelli's production of, 'Cabin in the Sky' for the first time, (starring Lena Horne, and Eddie Rochester, Ethel Waters and 'Bubbles'.) There's a scene in which Sublett character, ('Domino') sings and dances to an old vaudeville classic, 'Shine'. Needless to say, the entire routine (which includes him dancing up and down a staircase). Here was a revelation for myself regarding this man's extraordinary talent. Within this particular routine, he included the same maneuver from 'Porgy' that I, visually, thought was the result of edits, which was, his entire lower extremity twisting in the opposite direction of his upper torso! I learned that what I had seen years earlier was no edit, but Bubble's actual physically prowess, manipulating his body to achieve this visual effect! It was a stunning routine, and certainly worth the screening! (sorry for the typos and omitted words. Rushing this post before work.)
I know it's 1960 but still it would have been nice to see at least ONE BROWN SKINNED person.
I know, it was really telling when they panned the camera through the audience and they were all attractive white people lol.
Com certeza Michael o admirava!!!
Fabulous singer.
Thanks for making this available for our viewing pleasure. One of the greats.
Wow! No Words to describe the Greatness! Wish they were all still here! My mom used to mention the names Buck and Bubbles, and so many stars she used to know about during the 1930's and 1940's. But I was a kid in the 1960's and 1970's, so I had no clue about who she was talking about. She has passed away years ago, so it is simply wonderful to see these vintage videos. I sincerely appreciate it, now that I am getting up in age. So thankful for U-tube!
AWESOME SO ENJOYABLE A TRUE SUPERSTAR 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Just realized John's 58 years old here - impressive all the way around!
I guess the trick is to just never stop.
Can't beat them old time entertainers.RIP John Bubbles.
John Bubbles was the original Sportin’ Life in “Porgy & Bess”.(1935), giving the world its first performances of Gwrshwin’s “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “Dere’s A Boat That’s Leavin’ Soon For New York”.
