SafeSeas is a network of academic researchers who investigate maritime security. Our focus is on issues of security at sea, ocean governance and ‘blue crimes’. SafeSeas produces original academic research, commentary and guidance for policy makers and practitioners on security governance, capacity building and regional cooperation in the maritime environment. Apart from legislation how can States physically protect the cables? Sonar, satellite, radar, AIS etc surveillance of vessels (including submarines) at sea in the area of them?? Any other means?

This is my definition I hope it helps. "Maritime security is a concept that set system and protocols developed by diverse personnel to safeguard the maritime domain."

Very good to hear an academic version of what we practitioners do already experience at sea. With this academic approach it will hopefully be easier to get the "whole of government" approach which is needed - both for the Maritime Security as for the Blue Economy
