Bro I can not find this for $300, could you drop a link?
just search up Thinkpad T14 gen 1 on Ebay or Amazon and the ones with 10th gen intel or 4th gen ryzen are T14 gen 1.
i keep recommending these to friends in need of a new laptop. You can get them here for around 250-300€ reliably with the ryzen 5 and reasonable stats throughout. I'm glad i'm not the only one who does that :)
yep especially since a new $300 laptop is completely unusable and or terrible in build quality in comparison
I just bought an E14 thinkpad Ryzen 5 pro 4650u, 24g ram and 512 gb ssd and 97% battery health for $200. I know the T14 is better built in theory but I really haven't noticed the compromise with build quality. It seems much better value than what you paid!!
eh sure...the E14 is going to be cheaper and "better value" but the average person in average use is not going to notice the extra 8 gb of ram and the two extra cores. What they will notice is the extra heat from the two extra cores and the lower quality of the chassis, materials, keyboard, and screen. I'm not too sure about the E14 but the E15 and 16 has a ton of chassis flex, to the point of eventually destroying the whole motherboard over time. I mean sure people who understand and take care of tech can avoid that but your regular person is not going to do that and be left with a broken computer in 2-3 years. Lenovo is also very inconsistent with the quality of parts they put in their computers so even though in theory it should be the same specs, Lenovo is more likely to put the higher quality parts in the higher end models. Since the person that I was buying this computer for was willing to pay the premium for a solid computer that will last, I chose to avoid the cheaper E and L series. I will admit I didn't get the best deal on the T14. If you really searched, you could probably get one with the same specs for around that S200. But its going to be a lot more worn down and like I said, a non tech savvy person doing basic internet surfing and office work is not going to notice the slightly more performance but they will notice the worse condition and build quality.
Running Lubuntu 24.04 LTS on my X61 tablet and it's rock solid. But instead of using a swapfile I'm using a classic swap partition which you can just control through your fstab file. No problem! For better performance I installed Middleton-BIOS, faster wifi and an SSD. Also sound drivers, the wacom-tablet and fingerprint scanner are working fine (after some tweaking). Beautiful, little machine, very cool!
Nice Lubuntu used to be my Linux distro of choice and it was solid. But the lack of an easy settings program for when I'm lazy made me switch to debian. How did you get the fingerprint scanner to work? I can set the fingerprint supposedly but it never actually lets me scan when it prompts me for sudo or login
This has to be one of thee most bizarre reviews i have ever yet seen yet it was captivating. " What can I say about this thinkpad?" LOLOL Kiddo write down all the specs. Talk about it works and rolls in your workflow to name a few
Yeah I'm still trying to get a format for when I review computers. I usually talk about what I feel about the laptop which is why this laptop was so hard to talk about since I only had it for like a day where I set everything up and tested it out before I had to send it out to the person that wanted this thing. I'm real lazy so I don't write scripts and just free hand it. But I am trying to look at more laptop reviews to see what people want to see in a laptop review.
Exactly why Im a Mac guy. My old ass unibody Macs running 2024 MacOS or baremetal linux like champs. I dont even know what deck flex is. I do want to get an old thinkpad just cause.
I do have to agree that macs are built very solid, even still. Its sad that cost cutting has brought the Thinkpad quality so low these days. If you are looking for a Thinkpad I would suggest starting from the T430 or T420. They have a good balance between modern and classic features and are still relatively cheap.
I recently got an L14 G1 for 300 usd, Ryzen 7 and 16gb ram. Best purchase ever made.
Nice! the great thing about the L series is that I don't think they ever had soldered ram so you can probably upgrade that ram even further
Blocking a laptop's air intake with a bed is a high level of intelligence. Great work.
Ofc If it can survive the hell that is bed usage it can survive anything
@ so just because you can survive a jump from a building, you should jump off a building? Great logic.
nah I'm just lazy and I'm trying to justify my laziness
@@dcfbf place the laptop on a desk or flat surface so it increases the lifespan. Placing a laptop on a bed is the best way to get the fans clogged.
ik ik but my bed is so great for laptop usage in many ways: its a large area for me to do whatever, its comfortable, and my desk is completely occupied by my desktop. The fans getting clogged or the heat is an issue but I regularly change thermal paste and clean out my fans about once every few months so its not that big of an issue.
x1 carbon , nothing else around 300 dollars or euros
to me the x1 carbon is flimsy. Sure it doesn’t flex or anything but it is very fragile to the point of not being able to take a single drop. edit: Great laptop though, My X1 carbon is great even though there is damage to the screen
@@dcfbf in my case I use it for windows laptop and due to travelling I find it very comfortable. Negative is the fan... which is so irritating especially when used to my main laptop m3 macbook pro. I agree it is for sure not like the old school IBM die hard thinkpads. Lastly, the keyboard was, is and will be always the GOAT :)
I agree that keyboard is great. The fact that they managed to fit a keyboard with this much travel in such a slim laptop while having almost zero flex is absolutely amazing
My T14 trackpad is buggy, battery is faulty, dead pixels Didn't last more than 2 years
The trackpad and screen could be defective. The battery…not sure what you mean by faulty but if it drains fast then from what I’ve read it’s a windows standby mode issue. Also there are many different generations of Thinkpad T14 by now…which one are you talking about? Plus don’t these things have like a few years warranties?
I like thinkpads

Hello, I’m planning to buy a refurbished ThinkPad T480, but I have some concerns. The seller won’t allow me to open the laptop to check the hardware, but they’re giving me as much time as I need to inspect it. I know about the usual checks, like testing the display and keyboard, but I’m wondering what else I should inspect to ensure it’s in perfect working condition. Could you provide some advice on what specific things I should check without opening the laptop? I want to make sure everything is functioning properly before making the purchase. Looking forward to your guidance!
Check if all the USB-C ports work, there is two, both on the left side. There is a problem with this generation of ThinkPad with the Thunderbolt controller where it eventually fails due to unneeded writes to the controller, you can research more on this if you want, but just test that and make sure to update all firmware for the computer after you get it. If you want, you can check the other ports too...never hurts to check and you can save yourself a lot of headache as most of the ports are soldered to the motherboard.
@dcfbf Okay 💛
My only issue with the T480 is that I keep upgrading it. 64GB ram, 1080 touch screen 4K docking station. Abosolute beast running Windows 11 and linux distro dual boot.
@@cryptopelgrim4751 ah yes the being so good you’re going broke problem. I more prefer going broke by having a wide variety of laptops though

@harisanker1000 around 6-8 hours
@@dcfbf i have an old t580 to charge them
thanks for the video, gives me more confidence in my new pick up, a thinkpad x1 carbon g8
ooh nice though I will have to tell you that the x1 carbon g8 does not have the keyboard 1.8mm travel but it only has 1.5mm. Other than that I think the x1g8 will be a great machine and I hope you'll like it
@@dcfbf I got it yesterday, and i love it! Only thing is, i may need to eventually replace the battery, because im getting terrible battery life
@@h6zrds Thats great! Well if you do need to replace the battery make sure to buy the right one and reference the hardware maintenance manual for help. These x1 carbons are usually pretty easy to take apart but its always good to be cautious

Try chameleon web browser
Ok I'm reading through a lot of these comments suggesting all these browsers and I may consider making a video just testing various web browsers for windows 98
i dont use my thinkpad much cause i have a lot of other desktop at my place and i never go out lol... but i put fedora on mines cause im not regularly using it so i dont update it as much with fedora its a lot better for me just closed the lid open it up like year later and update it lol ...
Retrozilla is the Browser of Browsers it still can Access almost every Website under Windows 98
thanks i didn't know about that
Arch..... 🤣 I prefer Debian on those machines
@@escapetherace1943 well that machines shown in the video running arch is actually currently running debian
@@dcfbf nice. My main's on arch, my old x220 is debian. I figured debian was better because I can update it whenever, as I use the machine a lot less than my modern pc
@@escapetherace1943I still prefer windows for my newer pcs but ubuntu is basically on every one if my older ones around this age

Cool vid! I used to have an X61 but I guess someone else wanted it more. I ran Arch Linux on it with 4 Gb of RAM and a 128 Gb SSD for better performance. I have been a Tech for more than half a century. Linux for my needs is a far better OS than Winblows will ever be. Keep up the great work my new friend.
I would install anTix Linux or puppy linux on that fine machine. They both have 32-bit .iso options. I hope this intel helps.
I couldn't afford a computer growing up, but I had an uncle with a good job, a computer, and dial-up internet. Nearly every Saturday, when I was around 10, he’d let me use his computer after 2 PM-when the connection rates dropped. Those afternoons were where I learned everything that shaped my career today. My uncle passed away last year, and I still think of him and tear up often. I love you, Tio Folo, and I hope we meet again someday.
Try modern debian with the TDE desktop environment installed, you can get very very close to making it look exactly like windows 98se. TDE was orginally KDE 3.5x which was designed for hardware like mobile pentium 3's, TDE is an updated continuation of that old version of KDE. It's very pretty and you will be very comfortable using it.
@@nadirafurry well I’m not exactly a windows 98 user but I can try it when I have some time

@@deadlizard64 really? firewire is useless to me as I don’t have any devices that use it currently

What a legendary line of business laptops. I want a Thinkpad that can run Windows 11 natively.
@@hovanthecool1995 you know they still make thinkpads right?
Yeah, they just cost a lot of money. @@dcfbf
not exactly, a t480 or anything from that generation is windows 11 compatible and they usually go for under 200
@@dcfbf yeah but they arent made by IBM like this model, Lenovo bought their computing business a long time ago and have been manufacturing them since
@@SilasTheSilent you are right about that. Though if you really want to get technical, IBM or at least the IBM Thinkpad people still make the Thinkpad as when the brand was sold to Lenovo, the employees also went along with it. That’s why Lenovo has two HQs, one in China and one in the US.
