Hi Presley, I hope all is well with your health at this time. Prayers lifted for you. My diagnosis of uveal melanoma was at the end of June. It was a total shock! You were only 13 when diagnosed? How difficult it must have been for you and your family. I really admire your strength and willingness to advocate for all of us with ocular melanoma, and to educate those who know nothing about it. You're amazing 👏 🤩 💖!! I went through plaque treatment and had a biopsy done. I see my ocular oncologist this Friday to get results, so I'm a little nervous about that. But, I am trying to remain positive. Send good vibes my way! Best wishes to you! Stay strong!👍👍👍

The Shields treated my daughter when she was 4 yrs old back in 2000. She was diagnosed with retinoblastoma and they ended up removing her eye. Today she is 28 yrs and lives cancer free. These Drs are the very best.

Thanks for making this great episode. In my uveal melanoma journey I have been very fortunate in 2 ways related to this podcast. 1. My ocular oncologist in Sydney, Australia - Dr Li-Anne Lim, did some of her training with Dr Shields at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and 2. I was one of the patients under the care of Prof Anthony Joshua on the Australian NADOM trial that Dr Shields mentioned in the podcast, so I received Neoadjuvant/Adjuvant Darovasertib. I was thrilled to hear Dr Shields being so optimistic about Daro and metastatic disease. FYI my 13.3mm choroidal melanoma shrank to 8.1mm in the neoadjuvant phase allowing me to have plaque radiation, rather than enucleation. I have also just completed another 6 months in the adjuvant phase. 13months since diagnosis and no metastases so far. (My cytogenetics are the highest risk, group D)

Thank you Dr. Shields! Dr. Carol Shields was my doctor. Unfortunately, my tumor was too large and she enucleated my eye. Part of the problem is the wait time to get the diagnostic tests to make the appointment after diagnosis. By the time it had been diagnosed to the time I saw Dr. Shields, it had doubled in size. I had a very aggressive tumor and I am at high risk. It’s been almost 11 months now and so far no mets. I am grateful for every cancer free day. Dr. Shields saved my life.

Jeff, i hope and pray you are doing well. I was diagnosed this past June. I had the plaque surgery and Castle/biopsy. In a little over a week i will learn the results. Although i have cried a few times over my diagnosis, I am somehow distant from the reality. I can't articulate it very well, but it's almost like the idea of having cancer is a foreign concept. I hardly think about my having cancer even though i take my drops daily, which I'd think would trigger a reminder I do have cancer! I guess i am maintaining my distance from my melanoma. I wish all of us the very best.❤

Was the DNA of your tumor ever tested in order to determine the likelihood that it might metastasize? My oncologist recommended I go with the brachytherapy (radiation treatment) at the outset. And she took a biopsy of my tumor when installing the plaque so the DNA could be tested. The results of the DNA tests indicated that my tumor was highly unlikely to metastasize. Phew! As I listened to your story it sounded to me like you should have had either brachytherapy immediately or had the eye removed immediately. Who knows when the cancer cells metastasized? The sooner your doctors killed the cancer in your eye the less chance of the cancer growing legs. I'm from the U.S. So I don't really have any idea how sophisticated your healthcare system is in the U.K. I don't want to sound negative. But it does not sound to be as good as in the U.S. My tumor was 4mm by 13mm in size. So it was supposedly on the small side for a medium sized tumor in my choroidal tissue. It showed up in the bottom right quadrant just barely touching my macula. It did not go into my macula zone. I lost all vision in that lower right quadrant. And for the 8-9 months following the surgery I still could see pretty well out of the eye. But the images were a little warped. The big hassle was a muscle attached to my eyeball was snipped during surgery in order to stitch the plaque to my eye. And after the surgery I had constant double vision. My eyes would not line up because the muscle that was snipped was gone. Ultimately my macula zone deteriorated. The radiation treatment was just too close to the macula. So I am now pretty much blind in the damaged eye. I have reasonable periphery vision. But I have no ability to read using that eye. The double vision is gone since I only have periphery vision left. Since the eyes do not work together, I lack depth perception. I had my treatment (surgery) in Sept, 2021. I wish you luck with your Stage 4 Journey. Being faced with that is not something I would wish on anybody.

So they all get great care and have had no issues with anyone treating them poorly, as anyone would expect to be the case. Why are people always looking for trouble where there is none?

its a horrible deadly cancer , RIP Lexie once it express the liver. It is stage four there is treatments that will prolong life, but this cancer will kill you when it spreads.

The chance of spread is a lot greater if you have the eye removed versus plaque radiation surgery I have definitely seen that it spreads quicker more often and faster and people that do not keep their eye the plaque radiation kills the cancer cells when they remove your eye 15 years later, there are still cancer cells in the socketI am sorry everyone that has horrible disease and everyone has passed away
