one thing I hate about "fans" of anime and manga is when they think that they rule the world and can control others, you know, I wanna make a manga in the future, but I might not want it getting too popular because of this same reason. (I already have some canon ships in mind for when I write it) and when I do, I am going to make sure that people realize that it was planned from the start to be like this and not because of homophobia or anything, but just out of the fact that its the way it was supposed to be.

MAPPA are such huge fans of tatsuki fujimoto that CEO expressly stated his wish to one day animate all of fujimoto's works... that would include fire punch. I think now this would highly be dependent on chainsaw man's commercial success (im looking at u reze movie) especially that s1 kind of underperformed bc many did NOT like the art direction of the anime, saying it ripped chainsaw man of its colorful/grungy/dirty identity but judging from the teaser and the most recent character visuals, there will def be a new art direction going forward. The translation is correct in the anime. The literal translation is a tiny bit different but its the same message. Instead of "anti-alien" he said alien discrimination. And she says something to the effect of "what political correctness? shithead"

I love Fire Punch is an incredible manga. It becomes more and more philosophical as the story goes on.

You waffled on about translations and localizations for a long while to try and add credence to your point about how clearly Dandadan is against “political correctness”. Apparently the western ENGLISH translation is being used to go “Japan wants to go against western sentiments”. This whole thing hinges on the idea that the translations are accurately presenting the material with Japanese context, when it clearly doesn’t. But just FYI, the translations accuracy is uncertain since in the manga she actually gets angry over the insinuation she isn’t politically correct. She doesn’t realize she’s being rude. Wouldn’t it have been more accurate to present your point with some actual information from the creators? But then you wouldn’t have a video cuz they’ve never spoken about that. You mention Vinland Saga’s editor, but that’s just one guy. I agree that art needs to challenge people, and Dandadan does a decent job treating its subject matter with respect. Which is, you know, part of “political correctness”. Also, the irony of Japan technically being so against it is hysterical when you consider their refusal to properly depict certain cultures in their fiction accurately and refusal to properly acknowledge their war crimes. But then they get hyper sensitive and angry when the same behavior is about THEIR culture and war crimes against them. They can be as “against” political correctness all they want, but they sure can’t take the same treatment.

If you genuinely think Seiko is supposed to be completely in the right when she goes “screw political correctness”, then I think you’re missing the point of the manga and the scene as a whole lol The idea that the old lady who can’t even accept the alien is an alien is objectively correct whereas a main character must be wrong is ridiculous. Great art unifies opinions it doesn't divide them. Getting hated on because the protagonist and deuteragonist don't like aliens getting away with assault and manslaughter of bro's family respectively is wild. Make the main characters black and the aliens white humans and see the difference in treatment 😭🙏 that being said, their attitudes are inductive, so killing and eating all the aliens based on particular instances is fine enough reason for someone not to like them, but I simply see that as room for potential characters growth. I also find that unhinged rebellious attitude entertaining, lol.

I think it's really a shame what's happened to the phrase "political correctness" these days. like many terms that the internet gets its hands on, it used to mean something. and I think that's why I hate buzz words in general... they tend to blanket over actual topics, so that legitimate problems _and_ useless bellyaching are all painted with the same brush. so like, for example, when granny Seiko says the alien's blood is nasty, Okarun kicks up a fuss... probably because he's finally found an alien that might be friend-able and is desperate not to offend the guy, but Seiko isn't calling his blood nasty because she's got something against him. that is actually entirely beside the point. she's noticed a similarity between his blood and spoiled milk, and that observation could actually be utilized to help this man significantly, but only if Okarun can stfu for a second. they made it silly, but this is also a great example of "political correctness" getting in the way of what's really important. but, let's say that I wanted to talk specifically about the narrative dissonance between Momo being distressed by the Serpo aliens trying to assault her in episode 1, and the way she was drawn in sexy lingerie from a ton of different unnecessary angles during that scene. the stated purpose of the narrative is to show us a main character experiencing something upsetting. the visual language of the medium is telling us that we're supposed to indulge in seeing a sexy lady. these two purposes are a direct contradiction to one another. and I'm not about to get bitchy about women being attractive in the first place, or even the fact that Momo and Aira are in high school... that shit is so par for the course in anime, that you can either ignore it or opt out at this point, it's clearly not gonna stop. we just have to weather it when it's not our cup of tea, and trust people to know the difference between fiction and reality on this one. whatever. but if the author is choosing to put sexy ogling shots into what is supposed to be an assault... that's at least a flaw in the clarity of the scene's tone, from a technical perspective. all of this does fall under the category of "political correctness" but because of the definitional drift this phrase has experienced, it feels like this label can only be applied derogatorily. it feels unfair to apply it to an actual point. and on top of that... just because there might be a problem with that scene, that doesn't mean I'd want it censored. how would anyone have a discussion about it if we didn't have it here to consider in the first place? I wasn't fond of that one decision, but media can be whatever it wants to be, so long as the audience also has the freedom to respond. communication and response is the goal of art in the first place... if people are talking, then the artistic process is working as intended. even if the main take away is criticism. I generally like Dandadan, though I do think it's a mixed bag. it has some problems here and there, which I'll definitely bear for the sake of the parts I enjoy. but if folks are gonna actually talk about Dandadan, good or bad, they're gonna have to get over these simplifying blanket terms. language like that is a crutch, and it's actively preventing a large portion of the community from saying anything specific, or valuable. if I want to criticize the sexy shots of Momo during her assault, I'll criticize that, specifically. I'm not just gonna say "Dandadan should be more politically correct" because no one would be able to tell what I'm actually trying to get at.

I think what I love about Himeno is that her distress compounds, the more you understand about Aki. his family was killed by the gun devil. he now has a single minded focus on killing the gun devil. this, and nothing else. at any cost. he has no plans beyond it. and as such, he accumulates death flags like crazy. his sword requires years off his life as payment. the future devil knows he's going to die. even his main point of connection with Himeno is smoking... something that is known to be bad for your health, but Aki probably doesn't anticipate living long enough for it to matter. this is who Himeno cares for. she meets him when he's so young he can't legally smoke or drink yet. he's so naive that he thinks sticking gum to someone is a valid form of revenge. ironically... Himeno smokes, drinks, and pursues casual sex, because she needs those vices as a way to keep going. this is her way of managing the amount of distress that caring causes her, and handling this constant level of unrest is what being an adult means to her. she knows that Aki may be a hair's breadth from joining the number of partners she's lost, but cold logic isn't running the show anymore. he un-numbed her. so now, if she loses this one, it'll hurt. that's why she never tries to have sex with Aki. it's a vice when it's with someone who doesn't matter... just empty dopamine, like eating potato chips. with Aki, it would mean something. the closer she gets to him, the more distressing it is to think that she might lose him. even just the connection they already have is enough to eventually kill her. she can't stand the idea of outlasting him. not like her other partners... she can't do that with him. her only hope to change this, is for Aki to be safe. if he were to leave public service and be out of danger, then maybe she'd feel secure enough to love him fully. so when Himeno learns about Denji, she sees an opportunity. Denji is Makima's new plaything, and has been tasked with killing the gun devil, just like Aki. if Denji can do it instead, maybe Aki won't have to. and after seeing the way Denji handled the eternity devil, it seems like he might actually be able to pull it off. so she's willing to let Denji go through whatever that entails, no matter how much it may threaten him. Himeno is selfless, in that she'd do anything for Aki, even giving her own life in place of his... but she's selfish, in that she'd throw anyone else under the bus for the sake of this goal. in a way, Himeno is just as willing to sacrifice Denji as Kobeni was in the hotel... Himeno is just more subtle about it. "I'll hook you up with Makima, if you can help me get Aki" is just Himeno plotting to pull Aki out of danger by throwing Denji into it.

And this arc was the least best among all the arcs, can't wait for the movie thats the arc where the crazy rollercoaster actually starts!
